What a treat to host local guitarist, singer, songwriter, and all around good guy, Ralph Spight on Monday night. Ralph is known mostly through his years leading Bay Area Hardcore Punk band Victims Family, along with bassist Larry Boothroyd. Tonight he was in talking up his side project, which could honestly be a solid lead project for any other respectable artist, The Freak Accident, who are playing at Bottom of the Hill Saturday night, along with Smokers and The Young Barons.

Ralph has played with or toured with all of the legendary punk bands throughout the years, and he quite a few fine stories to share during the show. He is also the lead guitarist for Jello Biafra's Guantanamo School of Medicine

We talk about the upcoming show, touring, recording, playing guitar, layering instruments, and surviving in today's musical soup.

Ralph's songwriting is second to none and I know you're going to dig this.

Come on down to the Bottom of the Hill this Saturday, November 17th for this all ages show. Doors at 7:30, show at 8:30. Bring the kids!

I'm gearing up for my 12th annual Annual Annual, where I choose one year to focus two hours on. I've got my ears on three years right now, so you'll have to tune in Monday, November 28th, 8-10PM PST to check it out.

Enjoy and please share.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #253: Enough Already

Are you serious?!?!? How many does this make now, something like a bakers dozen? Do we get a prize if we hit 20 by March? What's the deal with all this celebrity death? And it's all the good one's too! Of course many of our recent passers-on probably shouldn't have made it out of the 1970s, so it's no wonder they're all drifting off of this mortal coil in their 70s, but still...

Last week we lost two more solid statesman. Maurice White, the founder of Earth Wind and Fire; and Dan Hicks, drummer, singer and songwriter of, who were to be considered the FIRST of the true San Francisco psychedelic bands, The Charlatans, and of his own band Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks.

I did a tribute to both on this evening. They are labeled for your convenience.

There's some new music from local rockers Older Sun, and Texas ass-whoopers, Honky, featuring Butthole Surfers' bassist J.D. Pinkus. Both are off of brand spankin' new 7" 45s on Valley King Records. I got both, and many more at Thee Parkside last weekend watching Dale Crover's side project Altamont.

So who's next on the list to go? I got a good amount of lists for my (not always) annual Run for the Lilies, and so far no one mentioned has passed away. No one had Antonin Scalia, but I'm pretty sure not many people I know will miss that guy too much. And he didn't record any songs that I cared for anyway.

Keep on keepin' on, fly like an eagle, and let choice be your voice.

Enjoy.

A sweet array of musical treats for your consumption tonight. No bands, just you and me. And just take a look at that playlist! Garage, Jazz, Hip Hop, Punk, Funk, Psych, Avant Garde!!! How does he do it, folks? This is no KFOG lowest-common-denominator-radio.

It's also the 50th anniversary of the birth of the Grateful Dead, so I through down a sweet jam from 1970 in the second hour. I'll be featuring some choice Dead cuts throughout the year, so if that's your thing, tune in during the second hour, and I'll treat you to a tasty treat from time-to-time.

I saw two brilliant shows last week. I had the pleasure of finally seeing my man-crush, Ty Segall, at the Great American Music Hall. I could go on and on about his performance. It was loud and fun, just as I was hoping. I stood front row, center, at the stage, surrounded by a bunch of teenage girls, and a rambunctious pit just behind (and at times ON) me. Three supporting bands, including Wand opened the show. Go see Wand when they're back in town.

Saturday night, I headed up to San Rafael to Terrapin Crossroads (formerly the Seafood Peddler), the home of Grateful Dead bassist, Phil Lesh. His new band, Communion, was playing that night. At 74 years old, there is no slowing him down. They played 4 hours! Seriously, there is no way this should have been possible. This guy was supposed to be dead years ago. What a great band. Fabulous jamming. Wonderful set and setting. If you're into this, then get up there when you have hankering a for jam band dance-fest.

Get out there and support live, local music, and local independent radio.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #100: I Spoil You

Tonight was my 100th show on Radio Valencia. There's something about that number. A one with two zeros following it. It's so....BIG! It's so solid, and right there in your face. I love things that are right there in your face.

I feel like Iron Mike Tyson. No, not really. He bit an ear off. I've never done that. I doubt I ever will. You never know though. I'm a lover, not a fighter. But I'm tough! I'm long-lasting. I'm reliable. Like. Mike. Tyson....Hmm... wait, let me think this over.

OK, I'm not like Mike Tyson, but my show will blow you away.

Sometimes you have to prepare like a fighter when you do a radio show. You have to know your opponent. In this case my opponent is the audience. I have to win you over. I have to get into your ear holes and make you beg for more. Don't worry, you'll get more. Ain't no Q-Tip gonna help you now.

Tonight it's all about the ROCK! There's so much rock in here, you'll be rolling all over the floor. In the second hour local guitar slinger and future porn star Eric "Snakey McSilver" McFadden dropped by. I've interviewed Eric a million times, but this has got to be the deepest, most hilarious interview with him yet. It's worth a listen. He tells road stories that go on for miles.

So much rock!
