Sometimes things come in twos: peanut butter and jelly, baseball and hotdogs, cats and furballs. So it came as no surprise when I had panned to take the night off that I was lured into the studio when I read about Rolling Stone magazine's horrendous Top 100 Punk songs of all time list. 

As for the second treat, you may have read, or seen the flyer posted around San Francisco, looking for a Daniel Lurie look-a-like to star in a porn parody "Let's Blow San Francisco". I was lucky enough to land Don Francisco, the producer, director, writer for this soon to be classic film for an on air interview, talking about the film and where they're at right now in the process.

Daniel Haver, from the Mabuhay Gardens, was in the studio co-hosting with me again tonight. I've really enjoyed Daniel being around. He's really coming into his own on the air. And then Rob from the band The Seagulls came by along with his friend Heather. And to round out the crowd, Jasper, host of Saturday's Broadcast from Limbo added to the mix.

We all had something loud to say about this top 100. Upsetting and confusing was the common call. My theory is the editors for this list looked at regions of punk around the globe (US and Britain that is) and then considered the top acts and albums from those regions. Finally, they combined all of that into one list. 

Lame. All of it, lame. 

Nevermind #9! 

Most of these bands deserve to be on this list. Pretty much all of them shouldn't be in the order they're in (MC5 after Blink 182, who shouldn't be on this list at all!). And where's the first Stooges and VU albums? Where is DRI? MDC? Cromags???

So between the music, the banter, the talk about what makes San Francisco great, this turned into a better choice than to just stay home on a Monday night.

It's that time once again when I get to indulge my inner Dave Morey and focus my show on one special year. This is my seventh annual Annual Annual, and this year it's all about 1992. I turned 22 in late September and was deeply involved at KFJC as well as attending countless live shows around the Bay Area.

The club scene was really good to me too. South Bay spots like Marsugi's and One Step Beyond were regular hot spots for us KFJC folks. I also spent a lot time at The Stone in SF, Paradise Lounge, Above Broadway, Slims, um, er, my brain is hurting trying to remember all the places. I recall The Omni, 924 Gillman Street, Berkeley Square, and Freight and Salvage in the East Bay too. And of course many many Grateful Dead shows up and down the west coast. 1992 was a really fun year for me.

As for the music, the indie scene was at a peak since Nirvana went super duper platinum (is that a ranking?) the previous fall with Nevermind. Major labels were doing everything they could to swipe up the next big thing. Some really horrible knockoff bands were popping up on commercial radio during this time. Some things never change.

I was hosting the 6-10AM morning show on Wednesday's at KFJC. The music below feels like I took it straight from one of my playlists from that time. It's possible I did. Granted we weren't allowed, by FCC rules, to play any music with naughty language, so there are a few tracks on here that I would have loved to have played back then, but could not. Count yourself lucky for the advent of internet radio!

Take a walk down memory lane for the next two hours and enjoy 1992 like it never left us.

Back on the air after a month away. I don't care to take so much time away from the aural pleasures that radio brings, but it had to be done. I traveled with my wife and daughter up to the great Northwest Territories! By that I mean Vancouver, Seattle and Portland.

I won't share the clusterfuck we got into at SFO when they wouldn't let my 11 year old daughter fly without a passport. Needless to say, we made it to all of our destinations, albeit about $1000 less in our pockets than I would have liked. ugh

We spent two days wandering around the EMP in Seattle. If you travel to that great town, please do your self a favor and go there. If you're a music fan, and I know that you are, you won't regret it.

Voodoo Donuts are overrated. There, I said it. Who the hell needs a Cap'n Crunch donut? Besides I live in San Francisco. We have Bob's. I do love me some Portland though. I will most likely retire there and start a radio station. HA!

On with the show.

The first hour pays homage to my late teens and early 20s. Spending time at the EMP inspired me to go back and listen to items on my shelf that may have collected a bit of dust.

The second hour is full of some tasty and rare surprises. A "new" Betty Davis LP issue of an oft-rumored Miles Davis-produced session was worth the wait. I have some new Melvins in there, as well as a number of live cuts from the likes of Tom Waits, Dave Bromberg, Allman Brothers.

I also blather on about the election, and croon about how much I love you.

Next Monday night, Little Lauson Hell makes an appearance. Tune in 8-10PM every Monday night!

My daughter, HellKatt is in the studio with me tonight.

Oh joy of JOYS, my 10 year old daughter, HellKatt joined me in the studio tonight. This is her third visit to the Radio Valencia studios, and quite possibly her best yet! She chose much of the playlist for the show, and yes, it's a bit more mainstream than usual, but so what? I was thinking about this on the ride over with her, and I'll put it to you the way I put it to her: music tastes are like food tastes: when you're young you have very limited desires when it comes to the food you are willing to consume. The same can be said of music. No wonder so many kids LOVE The Beatles! They're easy to consume, like milk chocolate.

But when you grow older your tastes change too. And change they should! Who the heck only wants milk chocolate? I want dark chocolate with salted caramel, dammit!

HellKatt's tastes have always been more complex then many people her own age. Her first solid food was avocado. And at the age of three she was eating entire green onion stalks, from tip to root! No lie. She also prefers milk chocolate.

So it comes as no surprise that she enjoys Alice Cooper almost as much as she loves Paul McCartney...and The Simpsons. I placed a "HK" next to all the songs that she chose. You may be surprised.

What a great night! I hope you enjoy the music, and the banter as much as we did.

I have a very large music collection. Too large some might say. But I'm a DJ, so shut up. Anyway, a lot of people give me CDs, asking them to play their band. I don't keep those, usually. Mostly, those go to the radio station. Others give me mix CDs, saying that I'll just love their mix. I often re-gift those. Often, but not always, and NEVER from my dear friend, and brother-from-another-mother, Mikl Em. His mixes are always thoughtful and irreverent. Yes, I know what that word means. Like I said, brother-from-another-mother.

As I was considering what to play for tonight's show, I found a mix CD he made for me a few years back, titled "Songs about God". I gave it a listen a realized, HEY, I can make a show out of this. I have lots of music about God. Not all of these songs are the most respectful, but then again my name is John Hell.

So tonight I bring you my own personal torment. I think you'll enjoy it. it was fun to put together.

We were also graced with the presence of guitar maverick Eric McFadden. He owed me a favor. No, really, he did. That's the only way I can get anyone on my show anymore. It's just short of extortion. Anyway, Eric ROCKS! He told some great road stories from his recent tour with Eric Burdon and the Animals, as well as updates on T.E.N., featuring bassist Norwood Fisher (Fishbone) and drummer Thomas Pridgen (Mars Volta).

A Season in Hell #104: John Hell is a Super Hero!

...or maybe I'm a villain. Which is sexier?

My earliest memory of reading comic books was when I was about seven or eight years old, it was an Amazing Spiderman. I couldn't tell you the issue, but Dr. Octopus was the villain. That I remember. I read comic books semi-regularly until I was about 13. I collected baseball cards then too. I still have the baseball cards (I turn 42 this Sunday, so that gives you an idea of how long ago this was), I no longer have the comic books. This wasn't a situation of my mother throwing out my comic books. As much as I enjoyed reading them, I wasn't seriously hooked. I don't know what happened to them. I know some of you are just cringing thinking of that.

It wasn't until Red Son came out that I found myself wanting to read more comics, and especially, graphic novels. I began digging for darker stories. I found that as much as I loved a good novel, I ached for the stories and art of a good comic or graphic novel.

I've been enjoying the Dark Knight series, Walking Dead, Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, Transmetropolitan, and yes, even Before Watchmen (say what you will, I'm sort of enjoying it).

Living in San Francisco there are more comic book stores per-capita than anywhere else on the planet. I have my choice of some excellent stores, so where do I shop? I go to Comic Outpost, 2381 Ocean Avenue, in the Ingleside district of this fair city. It's a family store. Nothing fancy. They've got all the titles I want, and they can special order what I need. Gary and Roger are the owners, and you couldn't ask for two more friendly and knowledgeable guys. Gary joined me in the studio Monday night to talk about the world of comics, then and now.

Tonight I could have beaten Usain Bolt. Maybe not his ego though. Then again. I wasn't on last week because I went camping at the great Camp & Sons, and participated in some debauchery, equaled only by those sturdy woodsmen of Bohemian Grove. Let's just say there were some unmentionables left behind. Anyway, I needed a week to recoup. So, here I am bright eyed and bushy tailed.

Most of the music tonight is from my library, so you know it's going to be tasty. And to look at the play list you'll notice that I'm mixing genres quite a bit. Isn't that what free form radio is all about?

Radio Valencia celebrated its 2nd anniversary on August 11th. We're all pretty excited about this. I'm going to be writing a separate piece about this in the next couple of days. Please look for it. In the meantime, Matthew Lasar of Radio Survivor hit me up to write a piece for them. You can check it out here. It talks about where we've been and where we're going. Speaking about where we're going, Radio Valencia is MOVING!!! It's time to stretch out a bit. We found a great space you'll be hearing a lot about in the weeks and months to come. A bigger space means bigger sound too. Yay!
