Although Radio Valencia as an entity does not identify with a political ideology, we don't censor our DJs when it comes to them voicing what they believe in. When I was involved with San Francisco Liberation Radio (2000-2003), we were very vocal about our stance against the Bush administration and its march to war. We were so loud that it got us shut down by the FCC, with guns blazing. Fun times.Monday night LawWorksAction.org streamed a 90 minute live reading of parts of the Muller Report, as recited by professional actors. I thought it important that as a show host/producer I have the responsibility to make this available to my listeners. I did not play the program straight through, beginning to end. Instead, I played to ~15 minute sections, peppered through my show.
When is the last time you read the US Constitution? Have you ever read it? Have you ever discussed it? Are you aware that every action that takes place in our nation has a direct connection to this document?
As for the music, it rocks!
Enjoy.

It was so great getting back on the horse tonight after three weeks away. The playlist felt fresh, and your comments kept me on edge...er, I mean happier than a baby with a fresh boob in the mouth!
You'll have to forgive me, I have baby-brain right now. That being said, I think you will agree that I can still throw together one hell of a playlist. Oh, I'm thinking about starting a campaign to get a local commercial radio station (107.7 The Bone, KFOG, Live-105) to allow me to program their station for one hour during the evening drive. I promise not to play anything with bad words...in English. Really though, the dreck they are playing is insulting. Give me one hour and I know you're going to have listeners hungry for more.
Until that day, keep tuning in Monday's 8-10PM and I'l give it my best; baby-brain and all.
Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #297: Steal This Show

I purchased my first bootleg, via cassette from a street vender on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, way back in 1983. It was a Grateful Dead show (obviously) from their 1981 European tour. Specifically, it was the Copenhagen, Denmark show from October 8, 1981. It was the second set only, and an audience recording. I didn't care. I was so excited. I was just shy of 13 years old, and I knew that I was in possession of some serious contraband. It thrilled me. My heart was racing. I had to hide it away. I didn't want to get busted holding something that I knew I wasn't supposed to have.
Looking back on that, it's so sweet I thought that way.
Shortly after that I began to hear tales of a store near my San Mateo home, in Burlingame, "The Record Man", who had a three ring binder full of shows, called "the bible", that he would pull out to show you if you asked nicely. I can picture him to this very day. I bought the brilliant June 18, 1975 Pink Floyd show from Boston Garden. This is an audience copy as well, but the quality far surpassed the 81 Dead show I had. This Floyd show had early versions of Sheep and Dogs, with their original titles "You've Got to be Crazy", and "Raving and Drooling", respectively. I was floored. By now I was totally and completely obsessed. I knew that I couldn't keep spending money on boots, since I didn't have a lot to begin with, having no job at 14. I had to think of other ways to find this golden booty.
I go into much better detail about my obvious addiction in a previous post, which you can find here.
I download an average of 12 shows a week these days. This year I've taken to featuring many of these shows during my second hour, but tonight I thought I'd take both hours to share what I've found recently. Sometimes two hours just is not enough! It's a mix from rock and blues, to jazz and reggae. There's some Americana and psych thrown in for good measure. As always I put the date and location for your edification.
In a few months I'm hoping to host another Rock Fight, where I go up against another bootleg collector and beat them to a pulp (aurally speaking that is) for about four hours. This time around, sound engineer John Karr will be joining me. Look towards the month of June for this show. I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, sit back, put on the headphones, close your eyes, and let me take you to many venues and many nights of live musical magic.
Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #284: No One Ever Listens

Thanks for tuning in every Monday night at 8. I never mention this on the blog, but it's always fun to chat folks up during my show, so please if you're listening take a second to say hi on the Radio Valencia Chatterbox, or if you're a FB friend, then on there.
Another show, another tribute. What's up with this friggin' year? I have done more tributes in this single solitary year than in my first 25+ years in radio, combined! Greg Lake of King Crimson and Emerson, Lake and Palmer fame passed from cancer at the age of 69 last weekend. Best known for his days as bassist/vocalist for ELP, he was also a co-founder of the seminal prog-rock band King Crimson, where he performed on the first record and toured for their first two LPs before going on to start ELP alongside the late great Keith Emerson, who died in March of this year, and Carl Palmer who still has a few weeks left before something horrible happens to him. ughMuch of the first hour is actually down right danceable. There are some seriously funky-ass tracks in here. Do me a favor and get your groove on until it's too late.
The second hour features a dive into my live music vault. And what a vault it is. You know, when I started doing the community radio thing a while back I committed to playing an hour of live music each week. I've sort of slacked off on that one, and for good reason. There are so many great releases I want to play with you week in and week out that the live music thing has had to take a back seat. Well not tonight. Take a look at the second half of the playlist and you can see that it's all over the damn place, and worth every second of your precious time.
I know the world has totally sucked this year. Who will it take next? Alan Thicke? Meredith Baxter (formerly Meredith Baxter-Bernie)? The election will still be with us. Syria will still be with us. Your job will still be with us...er, you. Maybe we just need to put some of this aside and enjoy the music for a little while.
enjoy.

A Season in Hell #66: Radio Valencia: I'm Too Jaded

I love interviewing local bands, and tonight I had in a great singer: Xandra Corpora of Con Brio. She likens the band to Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, but I think they have a really original sound. Check out the two tracks we played on the show.
Also, next week is Rock Fight 7. See below for details. Rotten Ronnie Donovan phoned in to talk smack, but I put him in his place and hung up.
Tonight, some brand spankin' new Mark Lanegan, which will knock your socks off.
