What was your favorite childhood toy? I used to love my Space 1999 spaceship. Loved it! I loved it more than the Star Wars toys I accumulated, probably because I really didn't care so much for the Star Wars franchise. I know, I know, shoot him now! I was more of a Trekkie. Did anyone own a Barbie? Did you own more than one? Did you own a Ken? Did you make them swap clothing? Did you have them make out? Did you take them apart and turn them into grotesqueries? My guest Monday night is all about turning Barbie and her friends into works of contemporary art.

Julie Anderson has curated "Altered Barbie" since 2003, hosting many multi-media artists who use Barbie as their muse, their canvas, their medium. We take the first hour and talk to her and singer Ethel Merman (who is performing at the opening reception this Saturday night) about the history of the event, the history of Barbie, legal issues and great art experiences.

I'm planning on attending the opening reception this Saturday night and I strongly urge you to come down and have a great night. It's absolutely worth every second, and you can walk out with some great art!

It's rare that I have two guests in one night but tonight that's what it's all about. Long time listeners of my show know that I always enjoy supporting local artists, So tonight two local artists! In the first hour Julie Anderson of Altered Barbie is back once again to talk about the all Barbie exhibition happening at Shotwell 50 Gallery located at of all places 50 Shotwell in the Mission. If you haven't seen this you're really missing out. Just picture it, hundreds of Barbie dolls all altered for your perverse delight. It's truly a wonder of nature. The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday noon to 7 PM, And Sundays noon to 5 PM. There is a poetry reading Thursday night and the closing gala is a week from Saturday, November 15th. Many of you may be aware that I used to MC Power Tool Drag Races at Ace Junkyard here in San Francisco. What you may not be aware of is that the landlord pulled the rug out from under Bill "The Junkman" Kennedy and closed the junkyard a few short years ago. Bill was a long time facilitator of the underground art scene here in the city, and Ace was the prime location for artists such as SRL, Life-Size Mouse Trap, Cyclecide, Seemen, and other metal obscurists to obtain those hard-to-find pieces which made their creations come to life. In the studio tonight filmmaker Yasi Mak talking about her documentary: Ace in the Hole, about Ace Junkyard and Bill "The Junkman" Kennedy. Bill is in the studio as well, telling great stories about his years at Ace. There is a Kickstarter campaign that ends today at 3PM to raise money to support the film. Please consider donating.

A Season in Hell #151: Waiting For The Doll That Has It All

On tonight's show I welcome back Julie Anderson, the curator for Altered Barbie, now in its 11th glorious, bedazzled year! What's up with that girl? She isn't anatomically correct, but that's never slowed her down. She's got her own Corvette for gawds sake!

I love having Julie in, she always brings the most colorful characters with her. And this year was no different. Three poets, a saxophonist and  Ethel Mermen of The Ethel Mermen Experience, all of whom are performing in one way or another at either the opening gala or the closing.

The interview is in the first half hour, so check it out, then go check out the gallery of crazy Barbie Alterations at Shotwell 50 Gallery, which is located at 50 Shotwell in the Mission, and is open 1-7PM daily!!!

I take the rest of the night to pay homage to Lou Reed, who just passed away over the weekend. Depressing. A truly iconic figure, Lou Reed never compromised his sound for anyone, be it his own band, the record label, or even his fans. He knew how to push people away, but was also a central figure in creating the punk, industrial and noise scenes that grew out of his own experimentation with music.

Ah Lou, would you have done it all the same if you knew you would have been gone by the age of 71? I would imagine he would say "yes". And why not? He wrote his life into his music. He was unashamed about writing and singing about his experiences with drugs. He spoke about the yin/yang of those experiences. He spoke about life and death throughout his career. If anything, he may have been excited to see what the next part of the journey is.

God speed, Lou.

Some tracks are pre-VU, which I can be you've never heard before. It's like nothing you would ever expect from Mr. Reed.

The live stuff here is brilliant, but my favorite of all is "Waiting for the Man" from 1972. Even while writing this I see that every track here is brilliant, and I should do a four hour special on Lou some day. If you check out many of the shows from Radio Valencia in the days following his passing, you'll notice that many have a Lou Reed focus.

A Season in Hell #108: The Return of Altered Barbie

WOW!!! What a night. The Giants win the pennant and I've got Julie Anderson, curator of Altered Barbie in the studio, again!

In 2002 I was on the air interviewing Dennis McNally of the Grateful Dead, when the Giants beat the Cardinals to head to the World Series. In 2010 I was on the air interviewing Mark Growden when they won the World Series. Tonight I was on the air interviewing Julie and a few others when the Giants won the NLCS in an ocean at AT&T Park. WOW! I'm 3-0. Look out Tigers.

On to the show. It's time for the 10th annual Altered Barbie Exhibition, opening this Wednesday, October 24th at 50 Shotwell, in San Francisco. The opening night reception, which promises to be fabulous is this Friday night. Curator Julie Anderson brought in some performers tonight, including GregAngelo (that's how he spells it), Cyclub and Ethel Merman. See links below for these fabulous folks.

I've enjoyed this show so much over the years. You really do have to go check out a certain San Francisco event. Even if you hate Barbie you'll love this show. It's "Altered Barbie", so you know it's going to be really fucked up. Good stuff. Tell them John Hell sent you.

As for the music tonight, after the guests left everything was on vinyl. I really have to thank my friend Kaylynn, who donated about 150 LPs to me and Radio Valencia. Everything I played tonight came from that collection. Lot's of 80s/90s indie, punk, metal, goth. All around goodness.

The rain has slowed down, and the crowds are now out of their cars celebrating in the streets, as I write this. It's going to be a long and crazy night in the Mission. I think I'll join them. This is just too good to pass up. Don't you wish you lived in the greatest city in the world, too?

Julie Anderson of Altered Barbie was in the studio tonight talking about the 9th annual exhibition, which begins this week at 50 Shotwell. I MCd this event a couple of times, and it's so amazing to see what people do with their Barbie dolls once they've grown out of playing with them.
