Oooh, you really need to listen to this show. Some of my finest segues. Radio truly is the art of the segue. 

That being said, I took much of the first hour celebrating the birth of the Godfather of Soul. (If I have to tell you who that is, we are really going to have a problem here). I can pretty much guarantee you haven't heard these tunes before, unless I played them here on my show...which it's quite possible I have.

Following that opening I've got some sweet treats for you on Cinco de Mayo, including new music from LA Witch, Death Valley Girls, and Amyl and the Sniffers, and oh so many stories to tell.

And where else can you hear MDC followed up with Ella Fitzgerald? Actually I can name a lot of stations that will probably do that for you. I have memories of playing Megadeth and Tony Bennett back-to-back when I was on KFJC.

I also took a moment to pay tribute to Dave Thomas (not that Dave Thomas) of Pere Ubu, who passed away last week. He also was the co-founder of the Cleveland proto-punk band Rocket From the Tombs. They reunited in 2003 for a few local shows. I threw the classic "Sonic Reducer" (also covered by Dead Boys, a few of whom were former Rocket From the Tombs members), but originally recorded by RFtT.

No guests. No training. Just you and me and a whole hell of a lotta music. Musically speaking this may be my best show of the year so far. There are some inspired sets I think you're gonna love. And these are some of my longest sets too!

In my early radio days at KFJC we had to follow the clock and break at :10, :20, :40, and :50, as well as play a legal ID at top of the hour. Each break we had business to attend to: announcing other shows , public service announcements, ticket giveaways, and other bits and bobs. This gave us a 20 minute sweep at the bottom of the hour, and one at the top (except for that pesky legal ID).

I've kept to that clock pretty much throughout the years. I like the idea of stopping often enough for you to know who I played, while also having a few longer sets where I can stretch out some. I often get a bit more dissonant during these sweeps.

I wasn't strict with the clock tonight. 

I also went shopping at Stranded Records on Sunday. New music from Goat, Melvins (best album since the Big Business days IMHO), and Meatbodies. Lots of music to drop your panties to. A brief tribute to Steve Albini (more to come on that loss). And so much more. Take a look at the playlist below. Click the link above to listen in.

The holidays are upon us, whether we like it or not. Seasonal affective disorder? Raise your hands. Anyone? Anyone? Not me, to be honest, but that doesn't mean I don't feel ya, for those who get down about this time of year. Strangely, when the clock turned back a few weeks ago, seeing it get dark early hit me in a way I don't recall it ever striking me before. I did not like it. 

It's sunny today. I should really get out in this, but I'm off work all week, and this couch is super comfy, and I'm not wearing any pants. 

Pants are for suckers. 

So yeah, I'm off all week because I'm an educator. A teacher. My lessons last an eternity, which is how long it takes to grade all these damn papers! I'm not here to turn you all on to the extra amount of work us teachers bring home; I don't wish to depress you all and add to your SAD. Oh hey, wow, did the DSM mean to make the disorder spell out SAD as an acronym when they named it? WTF DSM? Ironic joke indeed. And the joke is on us all it would appear.

Anyway, eat as much as you want and don't put on any pants for the next month. 

And enjoy this show! I was actually training to new Radio Valencia staff members, so I hope this came out OK. Since I was off work I took the time to not only pull some records I wanted to share, but I also put them in some kind of order that made sense to me. I don't often do that.

It's beginning to feel a lot like 2016 around here. too many fabulous musicians are passing away.

Tonight I offer my tribute to the great Malcolm John Rebennack Jr, better known as Dr. John, The Night Tripper, who passed away at the tender age of 77 on June 6, 2019. Considering he was born and raised in New Orleans with its amazing culture and rich cuisine, and had a heroin addiction until late 1989, it's a wonder he lived as long as he did. We're lucky just to have had him for the time we did.

I start my show with a 30 minute live tribute from a blazing hot show in 1987.

I welcome DJ Doug back into the studio with me tonight. He is starting a new show, Tuesday mornings, midnight-2AM on Radio Valencia. Be sure to tune in. He has excellent musical taste, if I say so myself. I always enjoy training new DJs. DJ Doug is a natural.

A Season in Hell #157: Time For The Radio Generation

Happy New Year! Back on the air after 3 weeks off.

I've been reading "From the Velvets to the Voidoids", and it's got me all in a tither about music from the East Coast and Midwest, circa 1969-1979. I've always enjoyed this era, but haven't known too much about the inner workings and incestuousness of it until now. WOW! Get this book. Starts with the VU, heads over to Detroit to cover the MC5 and the Stooges, before heading down to Cleveland, and back to NYC. So much to enjoy. And with that, it got me wanting to share the music of this time and place with you.

I've also got a few SF garage rockers for good measure. There was a recent story in the SF Weekly (a rag I used to hardly touch, but since the way the Guardian has gone down hill since their sale, AND because my dear friend Sherilyn Connelly writes for them, I give them a chance to win me over. Covering Radio Valencia in a recent issue helped) about the garage rock scene in SF (or what's left of it since Ty Segall left for LA, and Thee Oh Sees are on hiatus). Anyway, the article reminded me of a few other fine bands still rockin' it out in SF, including CCR Headcleaner, who I play tonight.

This show rocks, and I think you'll agree.

I was thinking about the "Velvets" book I'm reading and it reminded me of a few other books that you should have in your library, if you enjoy rock-journalist biographies by era. I recommend that you check out the following:
"Our Band Could Be Your Life", by Michael Azerrad
"England's Dreaming", by Jon Savage
"Please Kill Me", by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain

These are all excellent and essential reads, and you'll run out to grab all the music that you read about and (re)listen to it all with fresh ears.

Tonight, I have a dear old friend, Hindu Mike, on the air with me. I've known Mike since 1987, when he and I worked at Tower Records in San Mateo. Ah, those were the days. We didn't live in the nanny state we live in now. Life was so much better before 9/11. I'd like to thank Osama bin Laden, and mostly George "Shrub" Bush for making our lives so much more miserable. Thanks.

Anyway, onto the music. It's a mix of me and Mike. He's in a metal/punk band: The Rockin' Chair. It's a lousy name for a band, but they are really good. The banter alone is worth it.

A Season in Hell #108: The Return of Altered Barbie

WOW!!! What a night. The Giants win the pennant and I've got Julie Anderson, curator of Altered Barbie in the studio, again!

In 2002 I was on the air interviewing Dennis McNally of the Grateful Dead, when the Giants beat the Cardinals to head to the World Series. In 2010 I was on the air interviewing Mark Growden when they won the World Series. Tonight I was on the air interviewing Julie and a few others when the Giants won the NLCS in an ocean at AT&T Park. WOW! I'm 3-0. Look out Tigers.

On to the show. It's time for the 10th annual Altered Barbie Exhibition, opening this Wednesday, October 24th at 50 Shotwell, in San Francisco. The opening night reception, which promises to be fabulous is this Friday night. Curator Julie Anderson brought in some performers tonight, including GregAngelo (that's how he spells it), Cyclub and Ethel Merman. See links below for these fabulous folks.

I've enjoyed this show so much over the years. You really do have to go check out a certain San Francisco event. Even if you hate Barbie you'll love this show. It's "Altered Barbie", so you know it's going to be really fucked up. Good stuff. Tell them John Hell sent you.

As for the music tonight, after the guests left everything was on vinyl. I really have to thank my friend Kaylynn, who donated about 150 LPs to me and Radio Valencia. Everything I played tonight came from that collection. Lot's of 80s/90s indie, punk, metal, goth. All around goodness.

The rain has slowed down, and the crowds are now out of their cars celebrating in the streets, as I write this. It's going to be a long and crazy night in the Mission. I think I'll join them. This is just too good to pass up. Don't you wish you lived in the greatest city in the world, too?
