Hell's Kitchen Radio #320: Ain't That A Shame

I'm sleep deprived, so don't hold me too accountable for what follows. ...I'm trying hard to think of something witty to say. Hmmm. Who knew sleep was so damn important?

Ah yes, my show this week! I was able to get to my Fats Domino tribute. You probably only know him through his seminal hit "Blueberry Hill", but his sound helped define early rock and roll, rhythm and blues, with a touch of jump swing. His stride piano style was always evident in the New Orleans sound, whether he was playing one of his own songs of love and heartbreak, or a carefully chosen cover. I grew up in a household where my dad (born 1941) played a lot of blues, jazz, and rhythm and blues. Fats played a central role in my early musical development, which I'm certain I didn't realize until he passed away a few weeks back at the age of 89.

The balance of my show features new music from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (their third full-length release of 2017!) and Boris. There's some long noisy jams via Aluk Todolo, a jazzy cover by Sex Mob, a "weird" cover by The Residents, stoner spacey jams from Sleep, and an Op/Ed from John Lennon. There's more as you'll see below. Also, I gave tickets away to see Fu Manchu. Did you know that I often have tickets to local shows I give away on my show? You didn't?!?!?! Tune in and WIN!!! There's so much winning. You're going to get tired of all the winning, I promise you.

I've been spending too much time on Twitter lately. There are links below.

Next Monday night is my 7th annual Annual Annual!!! That's two hours from one year. I'm thinking about hosting 1992.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #304: It's Getting Dark In Here

Stream the Darkness, HERE!

I think I play it a little too safe on my show from time to time. There are nights that I bring a lot of black metal, or speed metal, or, well, anything darker than I usually play for you, but I hold off thinking "they don't want to hear this stuff". I think I've been insulting you, and for that I am sorry. I just didn't want to ostracize my audience. I fell into the "lowest-common-denominator" style of programming. Damn, what is wrong with me?

To make up for my radio shortcomings I decided to get fairly dark tonight. There's some metal, punk and garage thrown in, as well as some pretty choice hard rock cuts. It's loud, it's fun, and from the feedback I received during the show, well-considered.

Radio is supposed to be about the art of the segue. I choose music that I believe will move you. That doesn't mean it will always be a pleasant movement. It does mean that I have thought hard about why I want to play this song, and hope that you will take the time to consume it. I'm painting a two hour audio picture just for you. Isn't that great?! Just another in the many reasons that I love Radio Valencia.

Next week I'll probably play two hours of Americana and Bakersfield Country. Also, I have tickets to see Dave and Phil Alvin to give away. Tune in!

This Thursday night at Folio Books on 24th Street in Noe Valley, I'm interviewing music critic and author Joel Selvin about his latest book "Altamont, The Rolling Stones, The Hells Angels, and the Inside Story of Rock's Darkest Day". It should make for a great hour. It starts at 7PM. Come on down and meet me and Joel, and get a copy of this great read. I flew through it. I thought I knew everything there was to know about Altamont. Well I do now.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #282: 6th Annual ANNUAL ANNUAL - 2006

Stream another fine year, HERE!

Way way back in 2011 I had this desire to feature 1971 on my show. What a great year that was for music. This was when bands like Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones were still considered young and relevant. Following this show I made an executive decision to annually feature another great year during the month of November. Preparing for this year's show I was eager to share a more recent year with you. 2006 stood out to me even while we were deep in it. Taking a look at the playlist below I think you'll agree.

I didn't get to nearly all the artists and tracks I wanted to play during my sixth annual ANNUAL ANNUAL, but this here is smattering of the genius that was 2006.

If you're interested in my previous five ANNUAL ANNUAL shows, click the links below.

ANNUAL ANNUAL - 1971
ANNUAL ANNUAL - 1972
ANNUAL ANNUAL - 1973
ANNUAL ANNUAL - 1974
ANNUAL ANNUAL - 1975

See you next ANNUAL ANNUAL. Er, I mean see you next week.

Enjoy.

One band that didn't make it onto the show this year was Texas' own Midlake. Their sophomore effort "The Trials of Van Occupanther" was a real winner in the Hell household starting in 2006. It still gets a lot of play during road trips. Below is the video for "Roscoe".

It's hot in the studio again, so it's NAKED RADIO NIGHT. I was so dizzy with sweat that I just blindly pulled most of the songs here. But just take a look at that playlist! Sometimes you just have to take a risk. One day I think I'll just show up with no plan at all and no music in hand, and grab music from the mysterious Radio Valencia record library. That should be a hoot...or a miserable failure. Either way I'll make it fun.

Where else on the radio can you hear the entire Atom Heart Mother Suite, I ask you? Where?!?!?!

Enjoy.

Patsy, Cooter and Haskel McDonald from Shake Well broke down on the side of the road and joined me in the studio Monday night. They've been touring Tanzania and Namibia, and have found that being back in the Bay is a bit of a culture shock. Listen to them share their road stories, living in a van, cooking on the hot pavement of Zaire, and inter-band relations (they're all related, so it gets a bit funky).

Much of the music tonight comes from deep in my music library. But isn't that the way it is week to week? That's why you tune in. Also, BROWN appears to be some sort of theme tonight. I can attest to it not being on purpose. Seren-typical as Michael Vav would say.

Enjoy.

SEXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's how my guests got my attention tonight, and I'm a better man for it. Tora and JonJon from Tiger Honey Pot stopped in the studio tonight to share their amazing new release "Rock and Roll Sex Machine" and talk up their record release party, happening this Saturday night at Benders. The show is only $5, and they are GIVING THE CD AWAY AT THE SHOW!!!

This record is 100% ROCK AND ROLL (emphasis on the SEX). These two make a guitar/drums duo sound like a full on orgy, where the smiles, moaning and hip shaking never cease.

The whole show rocks tonight. They stuck around the entire time, and I had to pull out some show stoppers that hadn't heard before. I think you'll like it too.

Come out to the show. I'll be there. You can buy me a drink, and I'll shake my hips for ya.

Enjoy.

Sometimes I just need to play a bunch of stuff that I haven't heard in a while. And I also keep buying records, so I have to share those with you too. That's pretty much what you have here: a collection of music that I haven't heard in a while, and new stuff. Some of it's loud, there's some bluegrass thrown in, psychedelia, metal, Americana, gypsy-punk; you name it, it's in there. Some of the segues are priceless. The art of radio at its finest.

New music from Jack White, Boris, Hot Fog, and Obniii's

A Season in Hell #172: It's a Radioman's World

I said it once, I've said it 7000 times, I have a very large. And there're some days when I just sort of feel like playing a whole bunch of different stuff on the show. Some weeks it's jazz, so weeks it's blues, some weeks it hard rock and metal, But tonight it's just sort of all over the place. So forgive me for not seeming to have any type of focus tonight, but I think you'll agree with me by the end of this two-hour piece of artwork that yes, yes indeed, this truly is a delectable piece of art.

A Season in Hell #168: Daughter from HELL

What an excellent show today. It being spring break, I brought my daughter, Lauson Hell down to the studio to guest DJ with me. She's a natural. Two years ago Lauson guested on my show, which you can find here. It's fun to see how she's found her voice over the last couple of years. She's not shy, I can tell you that. I wonder where she gets that from?

We were filling in for DJ Cam Dam, who was kind enough to let me take over the day.

Lauson did her part, planning a set, which you can see below, announcing what we played, and answering my questions...kind of.
