The holidays are upon us, whether we like it or not. Seasonal affective disorder? Raise your hands. Anyone? Anyone? Not me, to be honest, but that doesn't mean I don't feel ya, for those who get down about this time of year. Strangely, when the clock turned back a few weeks ago, seeing it get dark early hit me in a way I don't recall it ever striking me before. I did not like it. 

It's sunny today. I should really get out in this, but I'm off work all week, and this couch is super comfy, and I'm not wearing any pants. 

Pants are for suckers. 

So yeah, I'm off all week because I'm an educator. A teacher. My lessons last an eternity, which is how long it takes to grade all these damn papers! I'm not here to turn you all on to the extra amount of work us teachers bring home; I don't wish to depress you all and add to your SAD. Oh hey, wow, did the DSM mean to make the disorder spell out SAD as an acronym when they named it? WTF DSM? Ironic joke indeed. And the joke is on us all it would appear.

Anyway, eat as much as you want and don't put on any pants for the next month. 

And enjoy this show! I was actually training to new Radio Valencia staff members, so I hope this came out OK. Since I was off work I took the time to not only pull some records I wanted to share, but I also put them in some kind of order that made sense to me. I don't often do that.

I love having talented folks in the studio to interview. There's something about being able to ask those questions about their art that really gets me going. Monday night I was honored to have long time Bay Area guitarist, producer, engineer Myles Boisen drop in to talk about his latest project "No Accident", a mostly prepared piano collection. He was kind enough to bring a bunch of his other recordings, including solo efforts, and tracks produced with his former band, Splatter Trio. He's played on quite a few sessions over the years, including Tom Waits and David Lynch. We spoke about all of this and much more.

I neglected to ask him about his tunings! Dang. Just an excuse to have him on with me again!

What a fun night this was, and I think you can tell from the between set banter. I know, I know, you've come for the music, and the music you shall have. Though Spring is in the air, other than the first track, I wasn't thinking of producing a spring-themed show. You can think of this as one if that helps you sleep at night, but honestly it was just me throwing down. 

New music from an Emily Palen side project: Othered. She'll be in the studio April 4th to talk up new KnightressM1 recordings. I have been dying to interview Emily, so this promises to be fun.

I've got some Jazz, 60s Psych, Funk, Metal, Garage, and Iggy Pop. What else could you ask for? 

We have a fundraiser for Radio Valencia this Sunday, March 27th, 4-10PM at our next door neighbors house, Make Out Room, 3225 22nd Street, in the Mission District of San Francisco. We need money for new equipment and upkeep. We also desperately need to spruce up the new space. Info on the flyer below. We would love to see you there.

There are times that I really want to send a sternly written letter to some commercial radio station, reminding them of the disservice they are doing to their listeners. It's almost as if they are some junkie pushing tainted drugs. The user doesn't even know there are quality drugs down to the left end of town (or in most cases left end of the dial). In this case on the left end of the internet. 

But why write a letter when I can just share this show, right? Should I send this show off to the program directors of the top commercial stations so they can see how much better they can be (that sounds pretty egotistical, and I didn't even need to reread it), or shall I just go to where their listeners hang out and offer them a better bang for the buck. 

Allow me to bang you. Bang you all.

It was tax day on Monday, so there are a few tunes that fit some kind of money theme, but other than that, I'm all over the place in a good way. I even improvise a bit more than usual and through in the 23 minute epic, "Echoes", by Pink Floyd. It's the greatest version you have ever heard. Tune in to find out why. I'm also falling in love with Mike Krol. This guy...sheesh!

I've been pulling out a number of anniversary box sets lately. CSN&Y, Ray Charles, The Who. I have new Ty Segall later in the show that will kick your ass. And that's what you want in a radio station, shows that will kick your ass in ways you didn't know you needed.

We have two more days until...? I would hate to think back to this day and think it was better then. Ugh. I know how you're feeling; this sucks. And sitting here right now I know that it feels that it's going to get worse if he wins again. And there are ways that it just might.

But it can also be an awakening. More people are voting in this election than in any previous election. Think about that. More votes on local and state propositions. More votes for local and state candidates. And if he wins, there's the possibility that he'll lose the Senate. He'll be more of a lame duck than ever. 

Get your ballot in, or yourself to the polls on November 3rd, and be prepared to wait as long as it takes to get your vote in. 

Are you a geek for polls? 2016 was a horrible election cycle for polling, but the pollsters swear they learned their lesson. We'll find out, won't we?

A Season in Hell #182: Mystic Midway

San Francisco has a history, all long and colorful, and sometimes very controversial history of art, performance, and characters who continue to push the standards of acceptability in whichever genre or medium they work within. It has been this way since before the gold rush. Even with the deepening gentrification which continues to build upon the rich creative and cultural history of our home, there is no denying the fact that people travel here and move here not just for economic opportunity, but also, and more importantly to be a part of the transcendental artistic center of the United States, and one of the most important artistic centers of the world.

On my show tonight I feature a local performance artist, and a local show producer, both of whom add to the charm, mystique, excitement, And flavor of what makes this town spectacular.

Scott "The Professor" Levkoff is the purveyor and creative producer behind Mystic Midway, "a community of artists, technologists, game designers, performers and cultural visionaries dedicated to creating deeply engaging, entertaining and meaningful social spaces."

On the show tonight Scott talks about Mystic Midway and upcoming events.

Tom Murphy is the producer of the annual Jerry Day event held in McLaren Park every year to celebrate the birthday of local boy, musical hero, and spiritual guide Jerry Garcia. Now and its 12th year, Jerry day sports and impressive lineup of musical acts all of whom connect in some way, either artistically or personally to the life and music of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead.

Tom talks about this years event, the lineup, the venue, And his thoughts about Jerry and San Francisco.

Lots of fun music, including A Muscle Shoals set at the beginning, a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the release of the Beastie Boys classic Paul's Boutique, some new music, and a rare live Grateful Dead treat.
