The holidays are upon us, whether we like it or not. Seasonal affective disorder? Raise your hands. Anyone? Anyone? Not me, to be honest, but that doesn't mean I don't feel ya, for those who get down about this time of year. Strangely, when the clock turned back a few weeks ago, seeing it get dark early hit me in a way I don't recall it ever striking me before. I did not like it.

It's sunny today. I should really get out in this, but I'm off work all week, and this couch is super comfy, and I'm not wearing any pants.

Pants are for suckers.

So yeah, I'm off all week because I'm an educator. A teacher. My lessons last an eternity, which is how long it takes to grade all these damn papers! I'm not here to turn you all on to the extra amount of work us teachers bring home; I don't wish to depress you all and add to your SAD. Oh hey, wow, did the DSM mean to make the disorder spell out SAD as an acronym when they named it? WTF DSM? Ironic joke indeed. And the joke is on us all it would appear.

Anyway, eat as much as you want and don't put on any pants for the next month.

And enjoy this show! I was actually training to new Radio Valencia staff members, so I hope this came out OK. Since I was off work I took the time to not only pull some records I wanted to share, but I also put them in some kind of order that made sense to me. I don't often do that.

Take a look at the playlist that follows, and click the link above to listen in.

Enjoy and please share.

Gobble gobble.

Well here we are once again. I have music, you have ears. Think of it as a match made in musical hell. Hour one is full of something old and something new.

How's this look to you? Be honest? Too much of one genre? Need more female-fronted artists? Not noisy enough? How about the second hour? I'm getting more live tracks into the second hour set. Do you want longer tracks with fewer artists, or shorter tracks and more artists?

Let me know your thoughts, and keep tuning in Monday's 8-10 on Radio Valencia.

Ooh ooh ooh!!! Tune in to me this Friday on KFJC for the annual 28 hour James Brown birthday celebration!!! I'm on 10am-2pm, and I'll be throwing down some rare and live JB tracks for you to get your groove on. KFJC is hosting its annual Month of Mayhem, with many specials each day to enjoy. Check out their Mayhem schedule here.

If music be the food of GODs, then play on?

Enjoy.

Sometimes it's just fun to go through my library at home and blindly pull some music. That's what tonight was all about. I did play a few requests, and the obligatory amazing Grateful Dead track to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Full disclosure: I signed on for tickets to the Bay Area shows. Let's see how this pans out. I promised, at the beginning of the year, to write about my history listening to and seeing the Dead live. I'll get on that soon. There are some great stories in there.

This Saturday night I'll be spinning at St. Mary's Pub, 3845 Mission Street, in College Park (that's between Bernal Heights and the Excelsior Districts. You know, the neighborhood you never visit, but is totally AWESOME!!! I'll be spinning with the great Tophzilla! He and I used to DJ at the old Anon Salon parties in the 90s. Punk/Funk/Junk from 10-2AM. Come on down and have a pint.

By the way, this Saturday is RECORD STORE DAY!!!! Please make sure you head down to your local record store (yes, they do still exist), and check out all the unique offerings. I'll be over at Aquarius Records, in the Mission. There's no other place I would be.

Enjoy.

It's always a pleasure to host local bands, and this week we have a serious contender for future-massively-awesome-band-of-Amerika award, Everyone is Dirty. Lead singer, Sivan, dropped by to talk up the band, and play us some tunes from their latest release, Dying is Fun.

Second hour is a mix bag, and a whole lot of fun. Take a look at the playlist and click on the links above to stream or download the show.

It's labor day, and I'm laboring for you! Be grateful, dammit!

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #134: Ronnie Loves Maggie

When I was ten years old, Ronald Reagan was elected president. The day he was inaugurated the Iranians immediately released the American prisoners. The reason given to us Americans was that the Iranians were afraid that we would attack. At the age of ten, I knew differently. I knew at that age that the someone had paid the Iranians off. How did I know that? I couldn't tell you. But the truth finally came out in Reagan's second term. I knew at the age of ten that I did not like, nor did I trust Ronald Reagan.

The next eight years would find our economy in a shambles, as we began to privatize and outsource everything. Many jobs were lost, the homeless population more than doubled, worthless wars were fought and the middle class began to shrink.

And this was just in America. Great Britain had Margaret Thatcher. There's was a thousand times worse.

Tonight on my show I welcome Steffan Chirazi, the writer and editor of the official Metallica Fanzine, "So What". He's a Brit, and he's got some glorious stories to tell about life under Maggie. We both play music from the era, that will bring back memories; some good, some bad.

But we can raise a toast, knowing that at least their both together again...in hell.

The last thirty minutes we feature some blistering music from Slayer, featuring the recently departed guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who died on May 2, at the age of 49, from what appears to be liver damage. The metal world lost a legend.

Pay your respects to the dearly departed, and stream the show here.
