I was really really looking forward to this show and it paid off in spades! My fabulous daughter, once known as Little Lauson Kai, told me that she was going to take over my show Monday night for two hours of musical whiplash. 

Now known as Spawn, she put together a really fine program, including interviewing me during the breaks! I was not prepared for that part. 

Lauson has been coming into the studio with me since she was seven years old. Now 19, she's got wonderful musical taste, and a gift for gab. I wonder where all that came from? 

As for her selections, I could not be more impressed. Seriously, there were a few tunes I was not aware even existed. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this show. I think you will too.

I've been dreading writing this post. If you're reading this, it means my dear dear friend Michael McElligot aka: Mikl-em has kicked this mortal coil.

He passed away from brain cancer on Sunday, August 30th. 2020. This has hit our community hard. I've known Mikl since 1996 or so, through our mutual admiration of everything SF Cacaphony Society had to offer. We hit every event we could find. It didn't take long until Mikl began producing  as many events as he attended.

Mikl was deeply involved in many stage performances at Dark Room Theater on Mission in SF, as well as SF Fringe Fest, Laughing Squid's Tentacle Sessions, Popcorn Anti-Theater, attended many Burning Man events, produced Speechless-SF, and the regular salons featured at Long Now Foundation at Fort Mason in SF.

So many of the best events I attended or were associated with over the past 25 years were partly or

mostly colored by Mikl Em. He was the epitome of inclusion. He was the essence of "let's put on a show".  He was love and light.

As a teacher I have been told that I teach to infinity, since I don't know where or when my teachings will end. Mikl entertained to infinity. He inspired so many of his friends, and even more who were in the audience.

We were super lucky Mikl chose to join Radio Valencia in our infancy. He started Can Haz DJ the second week we were on the air. He produced 50 shows, and I'm excited that we are currently re-running these shows Saturday's 8-10PM. Please tune in. Mikl was an exceptional DJ, who modeled himself after the legendary BBC-1 DJ, John Peel.

This show before you is a tribute to great musical mind. These are artists that Mikl loved, many of whom he turned me onto. We used to talk music in the most rambling and sensational way, often meandering in a tangential way across genres, and eras, always ending long before we wanted to. Our conversations were always ones for the ages. And now I guess they'll have to be.

He leaves behind his magnificent life-partner, Danielle, who I've known even longer than he. She's a vision of strength in life that has seen her share of challenges. If ever there is a person who is the model character, it is she. We love you, Danielle.

I miss you my dear friend. Thank you for shining such a beautiful light on all of us. I hope wherever
you may be that there are songs to fill the air.

KQED offered a beautiful memorial for him following his passing last week.

Such a super fun show tonight. Two things I love to do on the radio: interview talented musicians, and share rare music I search high and low for. Tonight you get the best of both worlds.

In the first half hour I had the pleasure to interview a very talented musician and songwriter, Manny Manriquez. Manny graced the airwaves on my show many moons ago, when I was on San Francisco Liberation Radio, while he was fronting SF's Ludovico's Technique, a great local rock band. Manny (or Manslice, as I like to recall him) moved out to Washington D.C. a few years ago, and has slowly been making his way back into the music scene. His new solo project, Outland Warrior, has some serious promise to it. The track he shares on the show tonight was inspired by author Neil Gaiman, one of my all-time favorite authors; so I'm not bias or anything. Really though, once you hear the tune, you'll agree it takes you on a journey. This should be the beginning of something big for Manslice and Outland Warrior.

To close out the show, and the year (I'm taking next Monday off to see Dead and Co.), AND to give one final celebratory farewell to the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, I chose some brilliant live Dead performances over the years to share with you all. Eight tunes in 90 minutes. Hey, that's a lot for this band. I have the dates and locations posted in the playlist below.

Thanks for tuning in this year. Ever since I was five years old, listening to the family radio at home, I knew I wanted to be a radio DJ. I've been doing a radio show in the SF Bay Area since I started interning at KCSM in San Mateo in the fall of 1988. My nine glorious years at KFJC (88-97) was the most exceptional musical and broadcasting experience my young self could have asked for. Being involved in numerous underground/micro/internet stations has continued to challenge me to make the most of my art. And radio is indeed an artform. I don't know what those clowns in commercial radio think they're doing to benefit anyone, but I can tell you that the fine folks at Radio Valencia really understand what it means to take an empty two-hour canvas and fill it with aural colors that enhance the senses in a myriad of ways. I'm lucky to be here.

Upon my January return, I'll have local club DJ RasCue in the studio to funk it WAY up. You are not going to want to miss this.

It's Sunday night, and I realized that I have yet to post my blog from last Monday. What the hell was I thinking?!?!? It's been one busy week, I can assure you. But that is no excuse for not getting the people what they want. And you want quality radio podcasts, don't you? Don't lie to me. I know how much you enjoy my well-considered playlists. I know you wait with baited breath for my mic breaks, where I'll wax poetic about the San Francisco of yore. Or perhaps, I'll bitch and complain about the cost of rents? Last Monday I think I went on a bender about a former student of mine (I'm a local SF public school teacher, but you knew that, because you tune in regularly and listen to me talk about my kids), and how falsely (?) blamed him for stealing my door stop, which just so happened to be a plastic baby's arm.

Now you too can stream or download this show and relive that fabulous story, and many more. This show also featured a tribute to the great jazz engineer, Rudy Van Gelder, on his 91st birthday. I played a few rain songs in celebration of the fact that it rained in SF for the first time in about 6 months, and I played a few songs to get you ready for our crappy election, where our lame "I'm never going to run for mayor" Mayor won a second term. Douchebag.
