There are a lot of educators in Gaza who are suffering not only for their family but for the families of the children they teach. San Francisco Unified School district has a number of educators who have started a grass roots Palestine Solidarity Committee, where they are teaching one another about what is happening in Gaza and how they can support the teachers who are there trying to care for their students.

I have three members of this committee on my show Monday night, in the first hour, talking about the work they are doing and how others can join in.

Oh wow that was really fun. There are those nights when everything just clicks. This was one of those nights. The tunes, the transitions, the mic breaks, and almost 100% of the equipment worked better than expected. That's saying something.

I've been doing this a long time, and others prepare their sets down to the minute, choosing just the right tracks days before their show, and it really shows. I've never been that way. Never. I bring a heap load of music with me, mostly vinyl, but I do have a small CD case I'll reload every so often, and then there's my external HD, loaded with my latest digital acquisitions. BTW, when I buy a new record, I love getting both the vinyl and the digital download. What a world we live in!

Lots of new music tonight, featuring Ty Segall, Kikagaku Moyo, The Bobby Lees, Dogbowl (thanks Jim!), Willie Nelson, Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder, and Boris. There's some Jazz, Punk, Blues, "Gospel", Psychedelic, Proto-Punk, British Prog, and much more.

I've been dreading writing this post. If you're reading this, it means my dear dear friend Michael McElligot aka: Mikl-em has kicked this mortal coil.

He passed away from brain cancer on Sunday, August 30th. 2020. This has hit our community hard. I've known Mikl since 1996 or so, through our mutual admiration of everything SF Cacaphony Society had to offer. We hit every event we could find. It didn't take long until Mikl began producing  as many events as he attended.

Mikl was deeply involved in many stage performances at Dark Room Theater on Mission in SF, as well as SF Fringe Fest, Laughing Squid's Tentacle Sessions, Popcorn Anti-Theater, attended many Burning Man events, produced Speechless-SF, and the regular salons featured at Long Now Foundation at Fort Mason in SF.

So many of the best events I attended or were associated with over the past 25 years were partly or

mostly colored by Mikl Em. He was the epitome of inclusion. He was the essence of "let's put on a show".  He was love and light.

As a teacher I have been told that I teach to infinity, since I don't know where or when my teachings will end. Mikl entertained to infinity. He inspired so many of his friends, and even more who were in the audience.

We were super lucky Mikl chose to join Radio Valencia in our infancy. He started Can Haz DJ the second week we were on the air. He produced 50 shows, and I'm excited that we are currently re-running these shows Saturday's 8-10PM. Please tune in. Mikl was an exceptional DJ, who modeled himself after the legendary BBC-1 DJ, John Peel.

This show before you is a tribute to great musical mind. These are artists that Mikl loved, many of whom he turned me onto. We used to talk music in the most rambling and sensational way, often meandering in a tangential way across genres, and eras, always ending long before we wanted to. Our conversations were always ones for the ages. And now I guess they'll have to be.

He leaves behind his magnificent life-partner, Danielle, who I've known even longer than he. She's a vision of strength in life that has seen her share of challenges. If ever there is a person who is the model character, it is she. We love you, Danielle.

I miss you my dear friend. Thank you for shining such a beautiful light on all of us. I hope wherever
you may be that there are songs to fill the air.

A night of risk-taking on the ol' radio stream. Or is it Internet stream? Am I allowed to call this radio? We don't broadcast on the FM/AM. We have no antenna. There's no static coming across the line. Am I remiss if I say I have a "radio show"? Or do I have to be all literal and state that I host a two-hour Internet music program each Monday night? That's not very sexy.

Then again, neither am I.

I purchased my first bootleg, via cassette from a street vender on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, way back in 1983. It was a Grateful Dead show (obviously) from their 1981 European tour. Specifically, it was the Copenhagen, Denmark show from October 8, 1981. It was the second set only, and an audience recording. I didn't care. I was so excited. I was just shy of 13 years old, and I knew that I was in possession of some serious contraband. It thrilled me. My heart was racing. I had to hide it away. I didn't want to get busted holding something that I knew I wasn't supposed to have.

Looking back on that, it's so sweet I thought that way.

Shortly after that I began to hear tales of a store near my San Mateo home, in Burlingame, "The Record Man", who had a three ring binder full of shows, called "the bible", that he would pull out to show you if you asked nicely. I can picture him to this very day. I bought the brilliant June 18, 1975 Pink Floyd show from Boston Garden. This is an audience copy as well, but the quality far surpassed the 81 Dead show I had. This Floyd show had early versions of Sheep and Dogs, with their original titles "You've Got to be Crazy", and "Raving and Drooling", respectively. I was floored. By now I was totally and completely obsessed. I knew that I couldn't keep spending money on boots, since I didn't have a lot to begin with, having no job at 14. I had to think of other ways to find this golden booty.

I download an average of 12 shows a week these days. This year I've taken to featuring many of these shows during my second hour, but tonight I thought I'd take both hours to share what I've found recently. Sometimes two hours just is not enough! It's a mix from rock and blues, to jazz and reggae. There's some Americana and psych thrown in for good measure. As always I put the date and location for your edification.

In a few months I'm hoping to host another Rock Fight, where I go up against another bootleg collector and beat them to a pulp (aurally speaking that is) for about four hours. This time around, sound engineer John Karr will be joining me. Look towards the month of June for this show. I'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, sit back, put on the headphones, close your eyes, and let me take you to many venues and many nights of live musical magic.

Are you serious?!?!? How many does this make now, something like a bakers dozen? Do we get a prize if we hit 20 by March? What's the deal with all this celebrity death? And it's all the good one's too! Of course many of our recent passers-on probably shouldn't have made it out of the 1970s, so it's no wonder they're all drifting off of this mortal coil in their 70s, but still...

Last week we lost two more solid statesman. Maurice White, the founder of Earth Wind and Fire; and Dan Hicks, drummer, singer and songwriter of, who were to be considered the FIRST of the true San Francisco psychedelic bands, The Charlatans, and of his own band Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks.

I did a tribute to both on this evening. They are labeled for your convenience.

There's some new music from local rockers Older Sun, and Texas ass-whoopers, Honky, featuring Butthole Surfers' bassist J.D. Pinkus. Both are off of brand spankin' new 7" 45s on Valley King Records. I got both, and many more at Thee Parkside last weekend watching Dale Crover's side project Altamont.

So who's next on the list to go? I got a good amount of lists for my (not always) annual Run for the Lilies, and so far no one mentioned has passed away. No one had Antonin Scalia, but I'm pretty sure not many people I know will miss that guy too much. And he didn't record any songs that I cared for anyway.

A Season in Hell #181: Art of the Segue

No guests tonight; just you and me. If you tune in regularly to my show, then you know that I don't often stick to one genre. Tonight is especially true. I'm all over the place, but I do believe that I tie it together in a nice tight, well-segued bow. Radio really is the art of the segue.

A Season in Hell #142: This Cat's Too Cool For You

It's good to be back. I haven't taken so many breaks in a good decade. I'm back in the groove after tonight's show.

After such hullabaloo from the Rock Fight 10 show, I needed a much deserved break. Also, I produced and hosted Comic Outpost TV for the SF comic store Comic Outpost, at Comic Con in San Diego. More on that coming soon. What an eyeopener that was.

My show has never been genre-specific. I plays what I wants to. But that's not saying that I can't focus on a specific genre from time to time. I've been collecting music (LPs, CDs, digital) since I was a wee lad, dating back to my first KISS records in the mid 1970s.

I have a rule when I shop for music: if I purchase three things or more, one MUST be from an International artist (reggae, dub, middle-eastern, etc.), one must be Jazz. By doing this I've realy grown a very well-rounded library. Tonight I was in the mood for Jazz. Most of the show is some tasty vinyl treats.
