Hell's Kitchen Radio #534: When The Revolution Comes

June was Black Music Month. I took Monday night to play a number of Black Power music. Honestly, I could host a weekly show of this and not nearly scratch the surface.

Some of this you'll recognize, but I bet dollars to donuts (mmmm donuts) you haven't heard it all.

I shared some Soul, Funk, R&B, Hiphop, Reggae, Dub and Jazz. I then pivoted to some brand spankin' new Redd Kross, that may be my favorite record of theirs! No kidding! Also, some new Shannon and the Clams and recent Iggy Pop. I close out the show with a little tribute to Kinky Friedman, who passed away last week.

Once again, i'm back in the studio every Monday after hosting live in the studio every other Monday for the past year. It's so much fun doing this show every week. I really feel that I can get into a better groove for you. Pun intended!

Enjoy this holiday this week, regardless of what the Supreme Court ruled this week. In the words of the brilliant Apu Nahasapeemapetilon celebrate the birth of the country by blowing up a small part of it.

Enjoy and please share.

Another winner of a broadcast for this week. I think I'm finally getting the hang of this. Lots of tasty library choices on this night. For you not used to the library lingo, "library" means older releases. Some older tunes, some afro-funk, stoner-rock, alt-country, live Iggy and live Dead! What else could you ask for? A few long jams? Sure, I've got that in the show as well. Some jazz and blues? Why not?! Some prog-rock and English punk? Ok, if you say so.

Happy Forfa to all of you. Please celebrate responsibly as you blow up a little bit of our nation, and perhaps a small part of your body.

See you Monday night at 8.

Also, Flint still has no clean drinking water, and Puerto Rico is mostly out of power.

Enjoy.

Joining me tonight is TradeMark G of Evolution Control Committee (and co-founder of RV) is in the studio for the first time in over 3 years!!! Trademark is the Godfather of the Mashup! That's a good thing, right? I think so. He hosted "Sound of Plaid" on Radio Valencia since our inception back in August 2010, and he promises to be making a comeback soon. We hope so. TM and his bride, Miss Frilly Pants moved back to Columbus, Ohio a few years back, and life just hasn't been the same for us Mashup freaks in da Bay. At least TM finished his masters degree. Way to go, brother!

The music was great tonight, but you really need to listen to his stories, between the tracks. TM is a great storyteller, and WHAT A VOICE! This guy has a real future in radio, if he wants it. My fondest live performance of ECC involved the Thimbletron. I've posted a video below, I think you'll enjoy.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #173: My Own Personal Torment

I have a very large music collection. Too large some might say. But I'm a DJ, so shut up. Anyway, a lot of people give me CDs, asking them to play their band. I don't keep those, usually. Mostly, those go to the radio station. Others give me mix CDs, saying that I'll just love their mix. I often re-gift those. Often, but not always, and NEVER from my dear friend, and brother-from-another-mother, Mikl Em. His mixes are always thoughtful and irreverent. Yes, I know what that word means. Like I said, brother-from-another-mother.

As I was considering what to play for tonight's show, I found a mix CD he made for me a few years back, titled "Songs about God". I gave it a listen a realized, HEY, I can make a show out of this. I have lots of music about God. Not all of these songs are the most respectful, but then again my name is John Hell.

So tonight I bring you my own personal torment. I think you'll enjoy it. it was fun to put together.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #166: DOWN IN FRONT!!!

I love hosting local live bands in the studio. They're just so darn eager and flattering. On tonight's show, Julie and Japa of Down in Front are on to talk up their Tahoe Corridor Tour, and their new LP/CD The Donut Shop. I love these two so much, for so many reasons, not the least of which is their musical acumen. But really, their witty repartee is worth the price of admission.

Their raising funds to record their first full-length: Down in Front does the Donut Shop. Check out their Kickstarter page, and please consider throwing them some dough. HA, I said it!

A Season in Hell #90: Ragi da Lawyer takes your calls

From time to time Ragi da Lawyer feels that it's important to allow his "friends" to receive free legal advice. Instead of them being able to come see him in his office however, he has them call up my radio show. Tonight was one of those nights.

The vivacious Phat Man Dee phoned in all the way from Pittsburgh, PA!

Also, since we broadcasted the Memorial Day BBQ and Hootnanny at El Rio last week, I'll be throwing down week 8/8 of my 40th Anniversary Europe 72 Celebration. This is one sweet jam to wrap it all up.
