What do you get when your host has one kid on vacation and the other in daycare all day? You get a very well-prepared program, that's what you get. I normally have a vague idea of how I want my show to go. I listen to music all of the time, so I always know about 25% of the songs I really want to share with you, leading into a show. I bring plenty with me, so it's all about having the experience of what artist or genre may match up with what I am currently playing (let's see Spotify really do that well!). This past week I've had a lot more time on my hands to listen to a bunch of vinyl that has needed my attention.

I also went to see Melvins last week, with Helms Alee opening. What an inspiring show that was! This program is more loud than normal. You get some fine sludge and doom, but you're also going to get some fine angular post-punk, psych, jazz, and more. New music from Helms Alee, Othered, and Ty Segall. That's why you tune in, and I thank you for that. I really do.

Take a look at the playlist below, click the link above to stream, and share with your music-loving friends.

The Radio Valencia studio is looking better each week: new paint job and soundproofing. We're getting our logo on the awning out front next week! Thanks to our engineering team (aka: JazzNazz) we have the turntables and CD players working better than ever! But we still need you. This is an out-of-pocket venture. Bringing you great programming is our mission, and we can really use your help. Please consider donating to Radio Valencia by going to our PayPal (we are financially sponsored by SF IndieFest) and throwing a few bones our way. Every dime is spent on station needs (rent and equipment mostly). I thank you in advance.

Enjoy.

You inspire me. Thanks for that. I hear from listeners throughout the week, letting me know what they're listening to, and often turning me onto something that I should be playing for you!

Feel free to comment here and let me know how all this is working out for you. What else can I offer? Seriously, how much do I have to bleed for your love?!?!?!?!

In the meantime take a gander at what I served up last Monday night. Funk, dub, indie, spiritual free jazz, post-punk (and NOT The Fall!!!), folk, torch singer, Nashville, legendary punk, Japanese psych-ambient-metal, Satchmo and FUZZ. A little bit for everyone in the family.

Click the link at the top to stream or download this gem, and please feel free to share with music lovers who don't know what they're missing.

And leave a comment.

Enjoy.

I just bet I can multitask with the best of them. And when I say I can multitask, what I mean is I can't. And neither can you. Really, you can't, so stop putting on your resume as a skill. I was training a new DJ on Monday night, which takes some real direct attention. You need to be present if you're showing a new host how the system works, as well as the Radio Valencia philosophy. I don't want to play all ten minute songs throughout my show, so the training was happening in fits and starts. I think if you are paying attention you can hear the fits. ugh.

Some of the segues are less than pristine. I'm not proud.

I am however proud of the music I chose tonight. Brand spankin' new music from Butthole Surfers/Melvins bassist Jeff Pinkus and Daddy Longhead. Also new music from Black Midi, David McMurray, and Henry Kaiser. There's also a tribute to ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill who passed away unexpectedly last week following a short illness.

If you're into ZZ Top (and who isn't???) then be sure to check out my two hour Live Bootleg Bonanza tribute from Monday night. It's two complete shows from 1980 and 1983.

Check out the playlist below for all the treats, and ignore the DJ error as I was training the next great Radio Valencia DJ.

I thank you in advance.

Enjoy and please share.

Due to the recent attempted break in at our new studio, we are in need of funds beyond what our staff can afford. If you can throw a few dimes Radio Valencia's way, we will be forever in your debt. Thanks in advance.

The illist villain to strike to turntable crew is coming straight at you once again, for your face, and your earholes. Better get ready, better get set, 'cause you thought you saw something, YET, Hell is in the hizzzhouse!!!

OK, I got that out of my system. Thanks.

Another Monday back in our new studio, and I'm getting used to the groove. This show is a wee bit different where the mic breaks are concerned. You'll have to give it a listen and let me know what you think. Don't be shy about leaving a comment.

Lots of new music, and almost all on vinyl this week. I realized that over the past 18 months, streaming from home, where I couldn't access my vinyl, that I have a heap load of great music on my hard drives. I wasn't about to keep that to myself.

I'm looking forward to getting some guests in the studio to interview soon. I already have my wish list, so stay tuned.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #392: Speedway To My Bed

Another week another show from my bed. It's a great bed, really. I can't say enough good things about the comfort. You should really try it out with me. Perhaps when all of this hullabaloo is past us, I can have a contest and host the winner in my bed for my show. It wouldn't be the first time.

When I was a DJ at 89.7FM KFJC (88-97), our late, great engineer Eric Weaver liked to use me as a guinea pig when it came to live remotes. I hosted a number of live morning shows from local cafes, when we had the idea of hosting a show from my bedroom. It was fundraiser time and we figured someone would want a chance of having spending the morning in bed with a dashing young DJ and a crew of engineers, all cramped in my little bedroom. And we were right! We called it "Breakfast in Bed with the Rev! I went by the Reverend Dah Wave back in those days. Truth be told John Hell was born in late August 1994. But that story is for another time.

I can't recall much about the couple that donated for the chance to spend their morning in bed with me. They were in their 20s, and thought it would be a hoot to spend 6-10am in the San Mateo bedroom with a long haired non-commercial radio DJ, his three roommates, and three staff members of KFJC. Actually one of my roommates was a KFJC staffer (RIP Spiderman). I made everyone pancakes, eggs and bacon for breakfast, and for the mic breaks I made them jump into my bed with me. It had to feel real, so every 10-20 minutes for four hours they had snuggle up with me in my queen-sized bed...with my engineer and another staffer sitting around too.

The music was being played back in the KFJC studios. We would "hand off" to the board op when we were done talking, and coordinate when to come back live to my bedroom.

Why am I telling you all of this? Oh right, I have been doing my shows from my bed ever since this pandemic has started. At least I'm lucky enough to be able to do this. Trust me, I do not take it for granted. I will not just phone in a show. I really love being able to share two hours a week with you. I'm thinking about taking on a second slot where I can play my live show in full. I have thousands. Don't believe me? Take a look for yourself. I still have a few hundred to add to that list, and it just keeps on growing.

I'll keep playing the music. You keep listening, and we'll get through all of this together.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #389: Little Hell Strikes Again

Sheltering at home means you're around your roommates a lot. It's one thing when you're not related to your roommate and you can be courteous and spend most of your time in your room, out of there way. It's another thing when your roommates are your family, including your spouse and children. I fall into the latter category.

I have a household which consists of my wonderful and supportive bride, Saucy Hell, our two year old son Bodhi Hell, and my 15 year old daughter from my first marriage, and the one you have come to know through her many visits to Hell's Kitchen Radio, Little Lauson Hell. Lauson has been on my show at least a dozen times now, starting when she was seven years old. The links to all of her visits are at the bottom of this post.

We've been home almost six weeks now, and I've been asking her to come back on the air with me for a while. She finally acquiesced and we broadcast last Monday night from her own room! And it was clean! It's actually the cleanest I've seen it in a few years. See, there is an upside to the shelter at home thing.

And for this show it was also 4-20. I really thought hard if I was going to play a bunch of pro-dope smoking songs. What kind of message would I be sending my daughter if her father was playing a bunch of Snoop Dogg and Cypress Hill? Not the best message, I agree. So I played Cheech and Chong instead! HA!

There are a few pro-cannabis songs in the mix, but I ain't no prude. Just because I support the use of the all-natural leaf doesn't mean I use it. And I certainly do not condone my underage child using it. She is well aware of that. But the music is just too good not to share.

Lauson had some great choices in there as well, and as usual a few a bit more mainstream than I would play. But who cares! It's my show, and Little Lauson Hell can play whatever she chooses, as long as it isn't misogynistic or pro-drugs. Oops.

I stuck around following my show for two hours and played seven tunes. That was fun. I don't have that posted here. You can go on the Radio Valencia Time Machine and hear it though. It starts up at the 4:48 mark. Here's the second hour.
