No, not that. That couldn't have been all? Maybe it was.

Music moves me. And hosting a radio show allows me to take what moves me and shove it down your throat. And I mean that in the nicest way.

A friend tuned into the last half hour of this show and commented that my show is so eclectic with the Beatles, psych, punk and alt. 

They missed the other 15 genres I played!

For some really odd reason I was in the mood for some electronica tonight. I am NEVER in the mood for electronica. Our former DJ, Timmiii, had the best electronica show I have ever heard, and I knew I could never do it justice, so I just shied away from playing much on my show. Tonight something called me, so you'll hear an early Silver Apples, and Harald Grosskopf. The Osees bring their full new Can-style in their latest release. The Seastones track will help your plants grow.

Funk, Jazz, Neo-soul, Hip-Hop, Krautrock, and Dub round out most of the show. New music from Orcutt, Shelley, Miller blew me away. Go see them live. I also have new music from Kate Vargas and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.

Starting out Black History Month with a BANG! Sweet sounds of funk and soul punctuate more than the first half of the show, and I know I'm going to have to keep this going all month. And why wouldn't I?

Growing up I was always put off that Black History Month was during the shortest month of the year. I thought it was an insult to African-Americans! Being a history teacher I learned this started out as Black History Week by Carter G. Woodson in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. It is in February to commemorate the birthday of Abraham Lincoln.

I've got some classic soul and funk peppered throughout the sets. 

The second half of the show features some library adds (meaning not new, but new to me), including the first Shannon and the Clams release, French Punk/New Wave Plastic Bertand, early Barbara Manning World of Pooh and more.

It's always a pleasure bringing music to you, week after week. I truly live for this. Your contributions help keep Radio Valencia rolling. We are wrapping up our very first "on air" fundraiser, which has brought in $2000+. This is a really great start, and we will use each dollar to pay for upkeep of the equipment, purchase new tech, pay for streaming and website needs, and any emergencies that pop up (and they always pop up).

There are good times and then there are really good times.

Guess what this night was about?

Eric McFadden and Kate Vargas stopped in Monday night to talk all about their latest project: Sgt. Splendor!

I've been friends with Eric McFadden since the late, great Rotten Ron Donovan introduced us back in 2007. He's been on my show countless times. We've spent many a fine night at clubs and ice cream shops. And then there was New Orleans. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit.

That all being said, I was introduced to one Adam Mackintosh, singer/songwriter extraordinaire in New Orleans in 2017 for an extra special event, which you can read about here. It was at this event week that I met Adam. We were to be roommates for the few nights we were in town, and he met up with me at a club. It was your run of the mill extremely hot New Orleans night in May, when he walked in wearing a brown three piece suit, ascot and sunglasses, carrying a brown leather suitcase and brown Italian sunglasses, standing 6'5". We were introduced and the first thing I asked him was his thoughts about cockroaches? The place was hot. New Orleans in May, hot. 

Adam and I have been best friends ever since. 

Eric and Adam haven't seen one another in a few years, and Adam was in town visiting family, so I naturally had him come into the studio. I purposely didn't tell Eric about this, because I like a good reveal. Another great thing about this night was that Eric's partner-in-crime Kate Vargas was along for the ride. I was planning on interviewing them about their great act, Sgt. Splendor, who is on tour right now, and will be playing Bottle Rock in a few months.

You have just got to be listening when I'm talking on mic and there's a knock at the door. I ask Eric to open it. The rest is radio history.

All three of my guests were very vocal tonight about songwriting and performing. I really appreciate them coming down. Give it a listen and I think their enthusiasm will rub off on you.

Here it is Saturday evening and I have yet to share my most recent show from last Monday. How is that possible?!?!?!? Oh right, I have job and a family. Yeah, that'll do it. I'm a high school teacher by day, and the weeks fly by, so no wonder it's already Saturday.

As for this show, hot damn, it's a good one. I mixed it up quite a bit as usual, but there are a few artists I don't think I have ever played on my show, including Otyken and Useless Eaters. Speaking of Useless Eaters, I took their track from a Live in San Francisco LP, produced by John Dwyer of the Oh Sees. He did a series of Live in San Francisco records for Castle Face Records. I own about eight of them and played a bunch in the second hour. If you are as Punk as me (and I know you are ;)) then you are really going to dig this!

The Kinks have released a 2022 remaster of Muswell Hillbillies, so there's some of that thrown in; Butthole Surfers cover Roky Erickson; Elvis Costello covers Neil Young; under appreciated Frank Sinatra; classic Mr. Bungle and so much more.

Having a chance to play these tunes for you brings great joy to Hell. There's a lot of blues in the first hour, and the blues always lifts me up! Give your ears a chance to get used to something new. I read another article recently that spoke about how people get set in their musical ways by the age of 32, and most of that music is what they were listening to in high school and immediately after. 

I'm about to turn 52, and ten of the tunes I played tonight were new to me over the past six months or so. I mean seriously now. I get that we're busy. I understand that for many music just runs in the background (I actually don't understand this at all, but I know not everyone can be as obsessed with music as I am), and I get that life keeps on keepin' on. I guess that's why I will always be a strong proponent for the power and magic of non-commercial radio.

It's DJs, who have the power to program their own shows, that give you a chance to sit back and enjoy the aural ride. Let us do the driving, so to speak. That's ok. I don't mind that. As a matter of fact I get really excited about that. Just listen to my mic breaks! 

A few notes about this show: Tom Waits is celebrating the 20th anniversary of both "Blood Money" and "Alice", so you get a taste of that. Some new music from Spain's Podium, new sounds from Ty Segall and Fantastic Negrito, as well as a premier from local guitarist/producer/engineer Myles Boisen, who will be on my show in two weeks, on Monday, August 22nd. Tune in.

A very inspired show tonight. Maybe it's the great music I've been listening to that I couldn't wait to share with you? Maybe it's the fact that I had a lot of time to choose my music before my show? Maybe it was the many people who came in and out of the studio and I really wanted to play some great music for them as well? Whatever the reason, this was a great show to host.

There's some psychabilly, psychedelia, funk, soul, folk, retro, goth, prog, jazz, classic rock, and even a dirty old one man band!

Hot damn, there's a lot for everyone here. Try that, Spotify! And you know what, they can't. Even Shazam gets stumped by some of what I play. That's what's so great about non-commercial community radio! You have hosts that know the music, not some algorithm that is programmed to tell you what to like. Do you know that program directors at commercial radio stations are now using Spotify to help them program their stations? Where's the human touch?

Standing in the newly painted Radio Valencia studio really fills me with pride, and inspires me to put on a quality show for you all. That's not saying the other weeks were phoned in, it just feels like I walked into a brand new studio and I'm really jazzed about it. 

Radio Valencia is a collection of jocks who have come together to play our favorite music for you. Some of us have been at this radio game a few decades now. RV has been going strong-ish since 2010. Having a storefront location this last year has been a huge boon for us, and we're now in a position to make the most of it; hence the facelift. Big thanks to the Tuesday night crew, Culturefest's Lilly and Joe. These two really went all out. I don't think the attached pictures do it justice, but they'll have to do. When I walked in Monday night I could have sworn the studio was actually bigger than before!

Tonight's show had a lot of emotion throughout it. New music from Emily Clark and Fanstastic Negrito. There's a 45th anniversary expanded edition Bob Marley, and a build up to this weekend's Mosswood Meltdown in the second hour. And George Carlin speaks about a timely issue beyond the grave.

I never enjoy missing my show, and last week was going to two hours of some serious celebrating, but family first, last, and always. So there ya go. I saved it all up for this show...kinda. I mean, the polish has sort of worn off, since el douche bag (I won't even capitalize that) won't concede. What a little prince he is.

I admit, the slow burn is fun to watch, but not at the cost of our democracy, which this fool doesn't care a lick for. It's all about the ratings, and possibly because he knows that he's about to have a few indictments handed down within the next year. So long, Donnie. I would really love to see him taken out of the White House in handcuffs, but that's not going to happen, and it really shouldn't end that way for this guy. Not that he doesn't deserve it. It's just not good for the country. The world isn't exactly laughing at us right now as much as looking on with eyes wide and mouth agape. 

So I do what I always do when the adulting gets too much, I listen to music. And just take a gander of what I have in store for your next two hours. I want to thank my dear friend, singer/songwriter and all around fabulous human, Adam MacKinstosh for throwing a bunch of recommendations my way tonight. Some days I get so overwhelmed with my music library that it helps to have someone else's ears around to lend a hand. Thank you Adam. 

New music from FUZZ, Neil Young, and local power trio KnightressM1. There's also a celebration for the 45th anniversary release of Patti Smith's "Horses", and much much more to satisfy even the pickiest listener, including a 16 minute funky/acid-drenched Grateful Dead "Dancin' in the Streets", that's sure to get you shakin' your groove thang until the orange cheeto vacates 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
