I was just in a mood, I guess. It is the holiday I suppose. I don't have seasonal affective disorder, or any disorder I care to blather on about, as far as I or my therapist knows. I will say that I am daddy-daycare for the next two weeks, since my bride be working, and that is enough to make someone run to the hills, regardless of how much you love the little tyke.

I don't think I was paying attention to the upcoming holiday until the morning of this show. I did not plan on doing anything special for this particular program, yet I do have a collection of music set for just such an occasion. I wasn't going to leave you hanging.

If you listen to me talk, it sounds like I'm blathering (there's that word again?) on and on about something that sounds important...to me. And you know what, it was...at the time. Feel free to comment on whatever floats your boat. Flies your kite. Walks your dog. Jerks your chain. You keep it going now.

There are some delightful alternate takes from box sets and deluxe editions thrown in, as usual. I went record shopping last week, so there are some items thrown in I was excited to get. "New" music from Art Blakey, The Bobby Lees, EXEK, Mike Krol, and new John Dwyer. I also shared a real treat that my buddy, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist and all around fine fella, Mark Growden, shared with me from French singer/songwriter Alain Bashung. There are very few people that I trust to offer a tune that I know I can blindly throw into a set. This one worked just fine. Welcome to this very exclusive club, Mark.

That being said, my father raised me to be extremely inclusive. His advice: invite everyone to the party. Allow them to decline.

I will always invite you all to this Monday night party.

Next Monday, December 27th, I'm excited to have Flipper drummer, Steve Depace in the studio talking up the December 30 and New Years Eve shows, Radio Valencia is co-presenting at Bottom of the Hill. Make sure to get your tickets fast. They are going to sell out, and it's going to be a blast!

Enjoy and please share.

I just bet I can multitask with the best of them. And when I say I can multitask, what I mean is I can't. And neither can you. Really, you can't, so stop putting on your resume as a skill. I was training a new DJ on Monday night, which takes some real direct attention. You need to be present if you're showing a new host how the system works, as well as the Radio Valencia philosophy. I don't want to play all ten minute songs throughout my show, so the training was happening in fits and starts. I think if you are paying attention you can hear the fits. ugh.

Some of the segues are less than pristine. I'm not proud.

I am however proud of the music I chose tonight. Brand spankin' new music from Butthole Surfers/Melvins bassist Jeff Pinkus and Daddy Longhead. Also new music from Black Midi, David McMurray, and Henry Kaiser. There's also a tribute to ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill who passed away unexpectedly last week following a short illness.

If you're into ZZ Top (and who isn't???) then be sure to check out my two hour Live Bootleg Bonanza tribute from Monday night. It's two complete shows from 1980 and 1983.

Check out the playlist below for all the treats, and ignore the DJ error as I was training the next great Radio Valencia DJ.

I thank you in advance.

Enjoy and please share.

Have you tried out our iPhone or Android app yet? Get them where you get your phone apps. I love the iPhone app and use it every day.

Due to the recent attempted break in at our new studio, we are in need of funds beyond what our staff can afford. If you can throw a few dimes Radio Valencia's way, we will be forever in your debt. Thanks in advance.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #440: Studio Bound

532 days. That's how long it had been since I had the pleasure of broadcasting from a radio studio. That finally came to an end Monday night as I entered the new home of Radio Valencia, now a storefront location deep in the heart of the Mission District of San Francisco.

Granted, there is work to do. We have a new mural by Alan Forbes that we need to get up, signage needs to be added on the front, new furniture purchased, and art hung on the walls, but I can tell you this is the place that I've dreamed about for decades. Really, decades. Have you ever seen the show "Northern Exposure"? Then you know.

We have dreams of looking similar to the former East Village Radio.

As for the show, it was all vinyl. I haven't had the pleasure to host an all-vinyl show since December 2019. I never hooked my laptop up to my stereo. I don't even think I can.

All of the music I played tonight was music I purchased during COVID. I didn't have enough time to play everything I brought, so next week might be more of the same. Oh boo hoo!

Of course I started with Melvins.

You're welcome.

Please forgive any technical issues, like over modulating, I'm getting used to the setup.

Enjoy. I can't wait to host you all!

Hell's Kitchen Radio #437: I'm Your DJ

There are times that I really want to send a sternly written letter to some commercial radio station, reminding them of the disservice they are doing to their listeners. It's almost as if they are some junkie pushing tainted drugs. The user doesn't even know there are quality drugs down to the left end of town (or in most cases left end of the dial). In this case on the left end of the internet.

But why write a letter when I can just share this show, right? Should I send this show off to the program directors of the top commercial stations so they can see how much better they can be (that sounds pretty egotistical, and I didn't even need to reread it), or shall I just go to where their listeners hang out and offer them a better bang for the buck.

Allow me to bang you. Bang you all.

It was tax day on Monday, so there are a few tunes that fit some kind of money theme, but other than that, I'm all over the place in a good way. I even improvise a bit more than usual and through in the 23 minute epic, "Echoes", by Pink Floyd. It's the greatest version you have ever heard. Tune in to find out why. I'm also falling in love with Mike Krol. This guy...sheesh!

I've been pulling out a number of anniversary box sets lately. CSN&Y, Ray Charles, The Who. I have new Ty Segall later in the show that will kick your ass. And that's what you want in a radio station, shows that will kick your ass in ways you didn't know you needed.

Radio Valencia is here to kick your ass in all the best ways.

Enjoy.
