This ain't no bar fight (though I'm fairly confident that Cash would win). No, this is a love fest. Johnny Cash and Nick Cave have more in common, musically, than many other combos. Cave has claimed that it was the fire and brimstone preachers of the American south that have inspired him the most in his songwriting, while Cash lived it by being raised there!

I've been wanting to host this special for a while now, but it's not easy with only two hours to cover two men of such musical prominence. I'm sure the critics can tear my sets apart, which is fine. How would you improve on this show? Leave comments. In retrospect, I could have played Cave's version of "The Singer", and left out the Cash/Dylan duet. Other than that I could have used about six more hours to really do them justice. Thanks to everyone who offered their suggestions on my FB thread.

Next Monday night will feature lots of new music and some psych jams.

Enjoy.

Tonight was all about me blindly pulling music from my deep and vast music library, and putting together sets that I thought you would enjoy on the fly. I think you'll enjoy what you hear. There's some new music from Ty Segall, Spacin', Zig Zags, and Earthless, some funky remixes of Nick Cave and Billie Holiday. You get some garage rock, funk, pop, psych, blues, and rap. What more could you ask for in a radio show?

Do you have any idea how lucky you are to have Radio Valencia at your fingertips. Tune in all the time. You'll be glad you did.

You have until Friday, February 5th to send me your deadpoop list for my 2016 Run For The Lilies. Send me a list of 10 famous people you believe will meet their maker by December 31, 2016. The only rule: you cannot participate in their demise. Please send your list to mrjohnhell@gmail.com

See you next Monday night, where I'll be doing a tribute to Paul Kantner, founder of the Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, and Starship, who passed away on Thursday of septic shock following a heart attack days earlier. He was 74. Just another mighty blow to the rock world in this young year.

Enjoy.

Patsy, Cooter and Haskel McDonald from Shake Well broke down on the side of the road and joined me in the studio Monday night. They've been touring Tanzania and Namibia, and have found that being back in the Bay is a bit of a culture shock. Listen to them share their road stories, living in a van, cooking on the hot pavement of Zaire, and inter-band relations (they're all related, so it gets a bit funky).

Much of the music tonight comes from deep in my music library. But isn't that the way it is week to week? That's why you tune in. Also, BROWN appears to be some sort of theme tonight. I can attest to it not being on purpose. Seren-typical as Michael Vav would say.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #85: Record Store Day Is Very Very Good To Me

A few days post-Record Store Day and I'm still reeling with the fact that I was broke going into it and even more broke now. But that's how the 12" spins I wager. Anyhow, RSD was a complete success where the radio broadcast is concerned.

I got down to Vinyl Solution at 10:30, where the owner, Tommy, warned me NOT to go through the RSD bins until the store was open. He didn't want the line-up outside to get pissed at him. I abided by his "request", though I did sneak a peek or three. Hee hee.

The equipment for the broadcast showed up late, so by the time the store was open at 11 I had to set up. I did jump into a box of records right at 11 though, and grabbed some tasty treats, many of which I played tonight. See below for the playlist.

Jack Champion brought down the gear, and we got rolling on the radio at noon. I was thrilled to be co-hosting the opening with my radio hero, M. Dung. He's a serious influence on my being in radio in the first place. It's hard to put into words, but it was from listening to him host the morning show on KFOG back in the 80s that sold me on getting into the wild world of local radio. Unfortunately for me, by the time I got into it the heyday of commercial radio was passing. Luckily for me I found non-commercial radio. Ha!

Anyway, the broadcast was a ton of fun. Lots of people, and the Feral Moon Band played. I got to interview Tommy and he gave me a discount on records. You really can't ask for too much more than that.

The first hour tonight is a selection of the music I got at Record Store Day; all vinyl. The second hour is my third part of eight celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Grateful Dead's EPIC 1972 European tour. I'm playing selections from 04/17/72 & 04/21/72.
