Monday night I was thrilled to welcome sex, intimacy and relationship coach "Shameless" Heather Atles into Hell's Kitchen. Having researched Heather, and knowing a bit about her background. this promised to be an entertaining interview.
We spoke about everything from shame resiliency and pleasure mapping, to the importance of mindfulness in intimacy. She touched on common patterns and dynamics with her clients, who range from singles to traditional and non-traditional couples, and polycules.
The topic of mismatched libidos came up, as well as jealousy, and the difference between rules and boundaries. I think my favorite part of the night was talking about erotic intelligence, thank you very much.
What was planned for one hour spread across the entire two hour show, with some apropos music sprinkled in between, so we could come up for air.
I think you're going to enjoy this as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you.
It's Monday and the boots just keep on comin'. Let's get dirty nasty funky with Prince and the Revolution from their very first show under that name, August 3, 1983 at First Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This show features a lot of firsts for Prince and the band, and will lead them to stardom within a year, following the release of Purple Rain. This recording is a newly sourced soundboard recording from this legendary concert.

Oh Dougie, you were too big for this world. Where are you now? Are you flying through the ether, looking down on us mortals, laughing from the belly about how silly we all are for crying over your passing? Or are you gone in a blink of an eye, only to live on in our memories?
Father, husband, friend, Franklin Douglas Fuller (November 5, 1962 - December 17, 2019) left us after a short six-month fight with brain cancer. He was the brightest of lights, that drew everyone to him who met him, and even those who had only heard of him wanted to know more. Whether you knew him as Doug, Toad, or even Ouchy the Clown, Doug was always present when he was with you. He made you feel special. He wanted everyone to have a good time, and he went out of his way to make certain that you were made to feel comfortable and welcome, while also pushing every limit you had. Of course Doug wouldn't push any limit of yours that he hadn't already pushed in himself, and found joy in. He was all about joy. Pure, unadulterated joy. He also walked the fine line of giving and not giving a fuck at the same time; all with a smile on his face, and a ready joke at the ready.
I asked Doug to serve papers on my ex-wife a few years back. I can honestly say it was the only time I have ever seen him nervous. He asked me if she was going to pull a knife on him? I think he should have worn clown makeup to the door. At the very least, a clown nose! Our daughters are friends, and his wonderful wife Candace is a close friend of my wife and mine. The memorial on December 30th at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland is what you think of when you imagine the way you want to be remembered. It was a who's-who of the Bay Area prankster scene. There wasn't a dry eye in the house as speaker after speaker came up to say what all of us already knew in our hearts: Doug Fuller lived life to the Fullerest and can never be replaced.

Sometimes it hits a little too close to home.
Rock poster artist and friend Ron Donovan passed away last week after losing his liver to too many years of alcohol abuse. I loved Ron like anyone did, which meant it was a love-hate relationship. He was funny, talented, smart, and charismatic. He was also selfish, often tardy, never with the tools he needed to do the job, full of excuses and a real pain in the ass. He burned more bridges than most. That being said, he was ubiquitous. There was no one like the Hobbit, "Rotten" Ronnie Donovan.
For over six years he was my foil when we co-hosted the 6 hour bootleg battle "Rock Fight" (links to most are below). Ron and I had perhaps the largest combined bootleg collection anywhere. It was easy to pull out brilliant live versions of tunes to one-up each other. He was always late to these shows, rarely had the material he needed, and would often pass out on the couch before we were through. I ended up having a strict "no hard alcohol" rule for these shows, which paid off as they were the finest we did together. We also hosted a few live bands and interviews during these marathon shows.
In 2011 Ron volunteered his services to make us a poster for Radio Valencia, which he was going to present at a big fundraiser of ours. He was four hours late and the poster had the incorrect URL and frequency on it! Oh, and he misspelled "commercials. HA! In typical Donovan fashion he just shrugged it off with a smile. I still have about a dozen of those posters somewhere.
Ron was mostly known through his great rock poster art. I met him when he and Chuck Sperry ran Firehouse Kustom Rock Posters. I would hang out at their warehouse and watch the magic happen. Ron was always the life of the party and often would bring the party with him. I'll miss seeing him in his ink-covered shorts-over-thermals, and socks/sandals ensemble, riding along on his Powell/Peralta board looking for a free drink at any one of many bars or "offices" he had around town.
Tonight's show is a tribute of sorts to Ron. I'm not sure he would have approved of every track, but he would have liked that they were all songs that one would want played as they passed on.

Say what you will about Record Store Day, my friend Dan shared some arguments against it, but I'm just fine with my obsession. I spent an hour in line at 1-2-3-4 Go! Records on Valencia last Saturday morning before being able to enter and peruse the annual selection. I also stepped across the street to Stranded Records to pick up a few more. I did not find parking by Thrillhouse Records and my wallet really ended the conversation for me by that point.
I'm not in it for the reissues of some major label dreck. I have no need for the Stevie Nicks rarities LP. As much as I love Prince, I really see no reason why to purchase the 1999 reissue. This is supposed to be about getting people to visit independent record stores to see what they've been missing by choosing to download or stream music, only. And there is a lot that you have been missing. You can see the full list of 2017 Record Store Day releases here.
The first hour of this show features my purchases. The second hour starts with a Prince "Deliverance" EP that a judge recently ruled won't be allowed for release until a hearing in May. You get first listen. Lots of live treats follow, including a rare Os Mutantes soundboard, and the night that Ziggy Stardust died on stage.

Way way back in 2011 I had this desire to feature 1971 on my show. What a great year that was for music. This was when bands like Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones were still considered young and relevant. Following this show I made an executive decision to annually feature another great year during the month of November. Preparing for this year's show I was eager to share a more recent year with you. 2006 stood out to me even while we were deep in it. Taking a look at the playlist below I think you'll agree.

One band that didn't make it onto the show this year was Texas' own Midlake. Their sophomore effort "The Trials of Van Occupanther" was a real winner in the Hell household starting in 2006. It still gets a lot of play during road trips. Below is the video for "Roscoe".

Aw man, really? Not cool, universe. Not cool. This has been one shitty year for music legends. I can kind of understand how Lemmy went. Bowie? That one hurt, but OK, fuck cancer and all that. But Prince? 57 years old. And now we're hearing that it may be a "Michael-Jackson's-doctor-kinda-thing". Do the JWs have something against meds? He was raised a Seventh-Day Adventist. We're they against meds? Or is it the other way around, and he was on too many meds? DAMN!
This one hurts, because he didn't stop being so damn prolific throughout the years. I read a great article about six months ago about how he could and would often record entire records in a matter of hours; overdubs and all. He has a vault of nearly complete releases that he just wasn't ready to release. I have to wonder when, if ever, those recordings will be released.
I first listened to Prince when Purple Rain came out in the summer of 1984. I was just shy of 14, and it was huge almost immediately upon release. The film came out a few months later, and that quickly changed the attire of many of my high school classmates. I was not into the fashion, but his guitar work quickly caught my attention. So many of my friends were metal-heads, and Deadheads, who wouldn't give him the time of day, but when I would play the guitar solo from "When Doves Cry" even they had to admit this guy was on his own level. Though Jimi has been dubbed the number 1 guitar GOD by too many critics (and who am I to disagree?), Prince is a very close second, in my opinion.
My father actually sold a ring to him during Prince's visit to SF in 1985, when he played a sold out Cow Palace. My father was the manager for Granat Brothers Jewelers on Grant and Geary in downtown San Francisco at the time. Prince walked in with his bodyguard, "Big Chick" who was this HUGE white former wrestler with long white hair. Prince sat down in a chair, and the bodyguard asked for the manager. My father approached, and the bodyguard looked at my dad, pointed to Prince and growled "Do you know who that is?". My dad said "no". The bodyguard replied "that's Prince. He's going to be the biggest music star in the world!". He then asked to see a number of rings. My father presented them to Prince, who chose a beautiful diamond, ruby, sapphire ring. They paid in cash and walked out. True story.
Now Prince is dead. Prince is dead, and my father ended up going to see him perform at the Cow Palace for that show, which was the Purple Rain tour. I wonder where that ring is today?
I was a mobile and club DJ for many years between 1988-2002. Prince was always in the mix. ALWAYS. How couldn't he be? Prince made the cut in every club DJs set. And if you're a wedding DJ then you have no choice either.
One good thing that may come from his passing, is this may have kicked MTV into actually playing music videos again!
Prince, I hope wherever you are it bathed in purple, with your pick of lovers and guitars. I can imagine a very long receiving line for you, and you not disappointing anyone in attendance.

It's all about 7 inches tonight. 45s people! Traditionally the 45 RPM single was the hallmark of the bands current release. It was the song they wanted to feature. Unless of course you were The Beatles, whose American label: Capitol Records, would take the 14 song LP they released in Europe, take two songs off and release those as singles on their own. Record labels suck!
Over time, bands who only had a few songs to share would press them on 45. There were even ads in the back of magazines in the 1960s and 1970s that would turn you into a recording star. All you had to do was send a cassette of your song to them and they would press it on 45! There are some real winners there. And when I say "winners" I'm sure you realize how subjective that term is.
In my own youth, we had dozens of 45s in the homestead. I relate this story during the second hour of the broadcast. It was New Years 1974 I believe, and my father was late coming home from work. We were living in Toledo, Ohio, my birthplace, and my father owned a small jewelry store, Phillips Jewelers, that also sold trinkets along with fine jewelery. As he was locking up to come home and take my very patient mother out for a New Years celebration, he stopped into the store next to his own, to wish a Happy New Year to the owner of the shop that sold billiard tables, and jukeboxes.
The story goes, the owner asked my dad to come in and have a drink to celebrate the new year. My father obliged. Many drinks, and a few hours later, may father realizes that he's very late, and needs to get home. He also realizes that he better not go home empty handed.
Meanwhile my mother is dressed and ready to go out to celebrate. I'm about 4 years old at the time. My sisters are 10 and 11 years old. I'm certain we had a babysitter there too. My father is late. Very late. Mother is not pleased.
Here comes dad.
Mom opens the door. There stands my father, looking much the worse for wear. He beacons "I bought a BIG record player", and proceeds to fall flat on his face.
My father told his friend to throw a bunch of 45s into a jukebox and follow him home. It was mostly the hits of the day: R&B, Soul, Rock, and many, many Dr. Demento-type favorites, some of which I played on the show tonight.
Whatever happened to that jukebox? It lived in four of our homes, between New Years 74/75 and 1979. It even lived in my bedroom in Greensboro, North Carolina for a year, because that's the only place it would fit. It scared the hell out of me at night; it looked to me like a robot. It was huge.
But I played that thing all of the time. Every record on the machine became my friend. I understood growing up what it meant to be a "hit". Perhaps that's why I've stayed so far away from commercial radio. I think it made me allergic to hit singles! Wow, that's a serious revelation I've just had.
So tonight it's all about the "hits"! How many of these do you recall? There are some real doozies on this playlist. Listen to the podcast. I tell some fun stories, including the one you just read about. Thanks dad, for going out for that drink...or three. I'm sure it really pissed my mother off, but unbeknownst to you, that night had a profound effect upon my life.

Once again it's time to put everything down, set six hours aside, and listen to John Hell and Ron Donovan butcher each other in a knock down, drag out bootleg battle, of epic proportions!
John and Ron have quite possibly the LARGEST live bootleg collection in the known world (source unknown and possibly nonexistent), and twice a year they share it with you, dear listeners. Why? They don't have to tell you!
The best part of this show besides the music, has to be the "witty" "conversation" between Ron and John. Yes, they know what they're (why am I talking in the third person? Oh well, I've already gone this far...) talking about. The two of them have been collecting live music for over 25 years (cassette, vinyl, CD, Flac), and understand the "OTHER" music industry better than most. Lots of discussion ensues.
In the fifth hour, guitar slinger Eric McFadden calls in following his show in Chicago, to share some road stories with us. He has made a number of live appearances in studio for Rock Fight's past. It's too kind of him to phone it in this time out.
About 99% are high quality soundboard recordings. Only one Zep tune is from an audience source, but what a show it was!
Who won you ask? It's possible that for the first time in over six years, it was a draw. We'll fight it out again in December.
