Hell's Kitchen Radio #560: Hell Gone Wrong

Well hot damn that was a fun show to host. If you know me, then you know I don't much planning more than bringing a stack of vinyl that's calling my name, along with a ear worm or three I've had throughout the week. There's also that strong desire to play something that may be brand new to you.

You get all of the above for this show. I start out with some funk and soul, having just viewed that latest documentary about Sly Stone, brought to you by Questlove. Highly recommended. I get into some dub and jazz, before going the 60s strip/bachelor pad music. This takes us into some garage punk, and then we get even louder!

I travel two at least four continents on this show. I wasn't close to done when the two hour mark hit. Maybe you should tune in this coming Monday night to see what I have in store? What a fine idea. See you then.

Enjoy and please share.

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza - Monday 6-8PM Pacific - Thin Lizzy May 14, 1976 & Cheap Trick April 27, 1998

John Hell's Live Bootleg Bonanza

Monday's 6-8PM Pacific

http://radiovalencia.fm

The first show tonight is from those boys from Dublin, Thin Lizzy. I was wondering for the longest time where their name came from, and I think it's based on the nickname for the Model-T, "Tin Lizzy". I could be wrong, but I'm too busy to look this up. Anyone? Anyone? Though Thin Lizzy still tours (pre-COVID), they just were never the same without frontman, bassist, vocalist, Phil Lynott. That's of course my opinion, the only one that counts...here. HA! Soundboard from this band are really hard to come by. I realized that I owned three copies of this great Detroit show from 1976. It's just so damn good. So that's the show I'm sharing tonight. Thin Lizzy live in Detroit, May 14, 1976.

Sometimes I just need some good ol' rock and roll. You know what I mean? Tonight let's rock out to two of the best 70s-era rock bands, hands down. Tonight's headliners, Chicago's Cheap Trick! "Can you honestly tell me you forgot? Forgot the magnetism of Robin Zander, or the charisma of Rick Nielsen?" Who can tell me where I stole that line from? Cheap Trick is ageless and just never slows down. I chose this stellar soundboard/FM master from The Roxy in Hollywood, April 27, 1998. I tell you, this band always fires on all cylinders. Pull out your air guitar, let your hair down, and give it up for this quartet of rockin' balladeers.

Stick around 8-10PM Pacific, Monday for my weekly music mix, Hell's Kitchen Radio. No special tonight, but I do have a lot of new music to share.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #304: It's Getting Dark In Here

Stream the Darkness, HERE!

Download the Deep Deep Despair (not really), HERE!

You can subscribe to my show through iTunes here.

I think I play it a little too safe on my show from time to time. There are nights that I bring a lot of black metal, or speed metal, or, well, anything darker than I usually play for you, but I hold off thinking "they don't want to hear this stuff". I think I've been insulting you, and for that I am sorry. I just didn't want to ostracize my audience. I fell into the "lowest-common-denominator" style of programming. Damn, what is wrong with me?

To make up for my radio shortcomings I decided to get fairly dark tonight. There's some metal, punk and garage thrown in, as well as some pretty choice hard rock cuts. It's loud, it's fun, and from the feedback I received during the show, well-considered.

Radio is supposed to be about the art of the segue. I choose music that I believe will move you. That doesn't mean it will always be a pleasant movement. It does mean that I have thought hard about why I want to play this song, and hope that you will take the time to consume it. I'm painting a two hour audio picture just for you. Isn't that great?! Just another in the many reasons that I love Radio Valencia.

Next week I'll probably play two hours of Americana and Bakersfield Country. Also, I have tickets to see Dave and Phil Alvin to give away. Tune in!

This Thursday night at Folio Books on 24th Street in Noe Valley, I'm interviewing music critic and author Joel Selvin about his latest book "Altamont, The Rolling Stones, The Hells Angels, and the Inside Story of Rock's Darkest Day". It should make for a great hour. It starts at 7PM. Come on down and meet me and Joel, and get a copy of this great read. I flew through it. I thought I knew everything there was to know about Altamont. Well I do now.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #248: A New Dawn

Stream the new year into your ear, HERE!
Download positive intentions, HERE!
Listen into all my shows here, or just scroll down

Happy New Year to all from Sir Hell. You didn't know that I'm a "Sir" now, did you? Well there ya go. How you like them apples? Did you have a glorious end of year celebration, or do you consider it to be trite and amateur hour? Either way, I hope you have set some positive intentions for 2016, or at the very least you call a friend and go out to see some live music. I plan on doing all of the above, and often in 2016.

For Monday's show I felt I should pay tribute to the recently fallen rock-comrade Lemmy Kilmister of the seminal metal band Motörhead. I remember first hearing the "hit" Ace of Spades in the early 80s, and knowing pretty much immediately that this band was no joke. I enjoyed Motörhead through the hair-raising glam metal years of the 80s and 90s, and loved that they kept true to their nature: raw and in-your-face loud. Monday I played mostly early tracks and a rare live track from my bootleg library.

Did you know Lemmy was a Joni Mitchell fan? Me either.

Monday also saw the 30th anniversary of the passing of legendary frontman Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy. Damn, where does the time go? I did a little tribute to him as well, including a blistering live version of "The Rocker" live, with six guitarist rocking out on stage!!!

The remainder of the how was a genre grab-bag. Take a look at the playlist below.

I am also excited to introduce my 2016 "Run for the Lilies"! You come up with a list of 10 famous people you believe will be dead by 12-31-2016, and send that list to mrjohnhell@gmail.com by February 01, 2016. The only rule is that you may not participate in the demise of any of the persons on your list. The winner will get a prize to be determined.

This should be a great year for music. Go out and support your local music scene, wherever you live.

Enjoy.

SEXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's how my guests got my attention tonight, and I'm a better man for it. Tora and JonJon from Tiger Honey Pot stopped in the studio tonight to share their amazing new release "Rock and Roll Sex Machine" and talk up their record release party, happening this Saturday night at Benders. The show is only $5, and they are GIVING THE CD AWAY AT THE SHOW!!!

This record is 100% ROCK AND ROLL (emphasis on the SEX). These two make a guitar/drums duo sound like a full on orgy, where the smiles, moaning and hip shaking never cease.

The whole show rocks tonight. They stuck around the entire time, and I had to pull out some show stoppers that hadn't heard before. I think you'll like it too.

Come out to the show. I'll be there. You can buy me a drink, and I'll shake my hips for ya.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #140: Rock Fight 10!!!!

It only happen once every six months. And when it does, babies hide their children, drunks hide there malt liquor, men cry into their beer. I can only be talking about one thing: ROCK FIGHT!

It's that time again, ladies and gentlemen, when rock poster artist Rotten Ron Donovan and Radio DJ Stalwart, John Hell get together and lay down the massive pipe that is ROCK FIGHT!!!

Ron and I have what amounts to be the largest combined collection of live bootlegs anywhere this side of analog hill (unseen on Google Maps). Every six months in December and June we get together to see who's is bigger and badder.

Every track below is followed by the date/location and who chose the track; JH for me, and RD for Ron. As you'll see, I've clearly got him beat, 2-1. He was also more than an hour late, which is why the first chunk of music is from me.

Not only is the music full of top notch performances and excellent recording quality, but the smack talk between music blocks sets a new standard (high or low, you decide).

There's an interview with Limbomaniac's frontman/bassist, Butthouse in the fifth hour, too.

Get ready for some prime time, low down, face-to-face, bootleg MAYHEM!!!

IT'S ROCK FIGHT 10 BABY!!!!

Enjoy.
