When you start out in non-commercial radio today there's such a learning curve when it comes to deep musical knowledge and history of the many genres one can investigate. When I started in 1988 I never thought that I would be able to conquer that mountain of musical mayhem. Almost 30 years later I find that I have a fairly intimate knowledge of many genres: early Jazz, Bebop, Post-bop, Chicago Blues, 60s/70s neo-Punk, 70s Classic Rock, 60s/70s Underground Funk, 60s American Psychedelia, Kraut Rock, 2000s Stoner Rock, all-things James Brown, Miles Davis, Grateful Dead, Melvins, and on and on and on...

I really feel for the new breed DJs who want to break into this scene today. There's just too much damn great music to listen to. I was looking at a collection of digitized music of mine recently, and I cannot believe how much I haven't even spent time listening to and getting to know on a deeper level. What the hell is wrong with me?!?!?! I really think that I need a gofundme for people to contribute to so I can take time off work so I can be able learn all this music to better entertain you.

There's a world of great music out there to enjoy. I appreciate you tuning in every Monday night, and/or streaming/downloading these shows to help you broaden your musical horizons.

Do we get to listen to music in the afterlife? I sure hope so, or it's going to be seriously boring. Or maybe when we die we can travel anywhere in time, so we can go see all those concerts that we were too young to attend when we were alive. That would be pretty awesome!

Who would you go see?

I'd see all the obvious 60s and 70s rock bands that I never got to see, but add to that Nina Simone, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Maybe Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams and Johny Thunders. Too many great artists to count, really.

Tonight's show wasn't about a lot of dead rock stars. No. There's lots of life in this here show you're about to listen to. Oh it's got its share of dead musicians, but don't let that get you down.

Tonight on the show I had two, count them, TWO local bands in the studio. In the first hour, Erin, from the Oakland trio The Hot Toddies came by to talk up her band's 10th anniversary show happening this Saturday night at The Fillmore. They're a surf-pop band, with some rather bodacious lyrics. Erin had some fun stories to tell, and I know the upcoming show is going to be a hoot.

In the second hour Rebecca and Mike from Happy Fangs stopped in to talk up their show, also this Saturday night. They're headlining at Rickshaw Stop. Hmmm, which show to go to? If you haven't heard Happy Fangs yet, then you MUST listen to this interview. Rebecca was having nothing of what I was serving up. OUTSTANDING! She served up some delicious Hell to this here host. Their brand spankin' new release, Capricorn, dropped a couple of days ago. Check it out.

I asked both bands a favor. One said maybe, the other a resolute NO!

It's all about supporting live, local music. Stop being boring and go to a show this weekend. I'm going to see my man-crush, Ty Segall at the Great American Music Hall on Thursday night. It's the first time I've ever seen him, and I'm really pretty giddy about this. As much as I really want to get in close, because he's very physical on stage, I also want to be in that sweet spot in the middle of the room. What to do, what to do? On Saturday night, I'm going to miss seeing both of my guests, and head up to Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, to see Phil Lesh's new band Communion. I wonder what they're going to play? Also, this room has got to be the BEST sound room in the Bay Area. And why not? Phil has the money and the musical acumen to create the very best.

Ah, for the love of live music!

Stop being boring, and go have fun.

A Season in Hell #172: It's a Radioman's World

I said it once, I've said it 7000 times, I have a very large. And there're some days when I just sort of feel like playing a whole bunch of different stuff on the show. Some weeks it's jazz, so weeks it's blues, some weeks it hard rock and metal, But tonight it's just sort of all over the place. So forgive me for not seeming to have any type of focus tonight, but I think you'll agree with me by the end of this two-hour piece of artwork that yes, yes indeed, this truly is a delectable piece of art.
