Spooky times are heating up at Radio Valencia. This is a good thing.

We had a really great fundraiser last Sunday. Huge thanks to GRHNS Gallery and Bernadette for hosting us. And thanks to the three great bands: Janky Band, Rustangs, and Fantasy for rockin' out hard for everyone. We couldn't have pulled this off without the incredible skill of San Francisco sound man extraordinaire John Karr and his assistant Ethan. And thanks to Sully and 21st Amendment Brewery for throwing us some suds to serve. And thanks to everyone who came out and those who donated online.

All in all it was a really fine day.

As for this show it's mighty extraordinary in its own right. I pulled out some spooky tracks and my trainee, Annika, has a bunch of 50s and 60s-era treats to share. Annika is going to be hosting her own show Fridays 6-8pm. Tune in. She has excellent taste in music, that fits in mighty well at Radio Valencia.

I also paid tribute to Ace Frehley of KISS, who passed away last week. KISS was my first favorite band. I tell the story in the show. Check it out!

We have a number of new shows starting right now. Are you interested in hosting a show with us? Send us a show proposal to station@radiovalencia.fm

What are your plans for Halloween? I'm headed to New Orleans with Spawn of Hell for a weekend of fun and frolics!

In the meantime, check out the playlist below, click the link at the top and enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #497: Join The Hell Army

Monday night was a real treat. I was in the mood classic American Blues from the early 20th century; the roots of Rock and Roll. I also have a number of 2022 reissues including Miles Davis, Kiss, David Bowie, The Beatles, and Michael Jackson! I don't think I've ever played Kiss or Michael Jackson on my show. There's even a brand "new" release from The Doors!

And the funny thing about Kiss, is they were my first favorite band. When I was about seven years old my family was living in Greensboro, North Carolina. My father's job took him from my birthplace of Toledo, Ohio down to the south. My aunt came to visit. She had been working at a popular record store, Peaches, and brought gifts! She brought me the first four Kiss studio albums and Kiss Alive II. I was hooked. This was in late 1977 or early 1978. It wasn't long until I joined the Kiss Army, replete with fanzines, posters, stickers and more! I wish I still had all of that stuff. Thanks mom.

I even dressed as Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley for a few consecutive Halloweens. My sister, Tracy Hell, was kind enough to adorn me with the makeup. Thanks Tray!

And then I discovered The Beatles. At the tender age of ten I thought you were only allowed to have one favorite band. So long Kiss.

Next Monday, December 5th is my 12th annual Annual Annual. I choose one year to feature and have a Hell of a lot of fun doing so. Which year will I pick? What songs will I play? Tune in Monday 8-10PM Pacific to find out.

Check out the playlist below and click on the link above to stream or download this show.

Enjoy and please share.

Some nights I just need to ROCK! And since we have no constraints on what we can or cannot play here at Radio Valencia, I felt obliged to feed my urge. Join me, will you?

WARNING: There is one, I repeat, one polka song. Then again it's by Polkacide, so I'm forgiven. If you have never witnessed Polkacide live I feel sorry for you. There a band that MUST be seen live to really understand the attraction. Their "final show" (of which I've seen more than my fair share) was just days after my son was born, October 8th, 2017. I look forward to their next final show, as I'm confident it will polka hard. Join my in the polka pit and you'll see what I mean.

Take a look at the playlist below and prepare for a quality neck ache, ala head banging for two sweet hours.

Enjoy.

I found Judge Roy Moore's iPod and you would not believe what he has on this thing! He has a playlist called "Statutory Rock". It's all songs about sex with underage girls, mostly. Dude! I just had to play it on my show. Who knew there were so many songs about having illegal sex with people underage? If you lived in the 70s then you pretty much figured that was happening all the time. And if you live in Alabama today then you probably have kids with someone who is currently underage, and it's possible your sister or brother or some kinda relative anyway. Yes, I went there.

Enjoy and please vote.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #297: Steal This Show

You can subscribe to my show through iTunes here.

I purchased my first bootleg, via cassette from a street vender on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, way back in 1983. It was a Grateful Dead show (obviously) from their 1981 European tour. Specifically, it was the Copenhagen, Denmark show from October 8, 1981. It was the second set only, and an audience recording. I didn't care. I was so excited. I was just shy of 13 years old, and I knew that I was in possession of some serious contraband. It thrilled me. My heart was racing. I had to hide it away. I didn't want to get busted holding something that I knew I wasn't supposed to have.

Looking back on that, it's so sweet I thought that way.

Shortly after that I began to hear tales of a store near my San Mateo home, in Burlingame, "The Record Man", who had a three ring binder full of shows, called "the bible", that he would pull out to show you if you asked nicely. I can picture him to this very day. I bought the brilliant June 18, 1975 Pink Floyd show from Boston Garden. This is an audience copy as well, but the quality far surpassed the 81 Dead show I had. This Floyd show had early versions of Sheep and Dogs, with their original titles "You've Got to be Crazy", and "Raving and Drooling", respectively. I was floored. By now I was totally and completely obsessed. I knew that I couldn't keep spending money on boots, since I didn't have a lot to begin with, having no job at 14. I had to think of other ways to find this golden booty.

I go into much better detail about my obvious addiction in a previous post, which you can find here.

I download an average of 12 shows a week these days. This year I've taken to featuring many of these shows during my second hour, but tonight I thought I'd take both hours to share what I've found recently. Sometimes two hours just is not enough! It's a mix from rock and blues, to jazz and reggae. There's some Americana and psych thrown in for good measure. As always I put the date and location for your edification.

In a few months I'm hoping to host another Rock Fight, where I go up against another bootleg collector and beat them to a pulp (aurally speaking that is) for about four hours. This time around, sound engineer John Karr will be joining me. Look towards the month of June for this show. I'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, sit back, put on the headphones, close your eyes, and let me take you to many venues and many nights of live musical magic.

Enjoy.

1975! What a year! What do you recall? I was five years old, and living in Toledo, Ohio. My aunt, who worked at Peaches Records bought me the first five KISS LPs, so naturally, KISS was my first favorite band. That's all I really remember about that year.

Being older, and a scholar of music and culture, I can tell you that 1975 was a real crossover year. The 60s were definitely over by this time. Music was moving a bit more into the "Yacht Rock" era, and Disco was starting to emerge as well. Funk was at its creative peak. Punk wouldn't really break onto the scene for another year, and metal was also still in its infancy. It was a weird year.

Some of my favorite records were released this year: Physical Graffiti, Nighthawks at the Diner, and Blood on the Tracks, just to name a few.

Along with Eric McFadden and Delphine de St Paer, we delve into the many faces of 1975 last Monday night. We just barely scratch the surface in two hours time. Take a look at the playlist below, and click on the links above to stream or download this show.

Enjoy.

My Life With The Grateful Dead, Part One: What's In A Name?

I grew up in a household where many musical genres wafting through the air was a common thing. My father's interest was in the music of his youth from the 50s: rock and roll, and rhythm and blues. My mother was often heard singing Tom Jones or Helen Reddy tunes. My older sisters' were into the rock music of the day: mostly bands like Boston, Bob Seger, Foreigner, and Styx. Saturday's my sisters would dance to American Bandstand, while I, even in my youth preferred Soul Train, even though my first favorite band was Kiss. My Aunt Angie was working for Peaches Records, and brought me the first few Kiss records as a gift, when she came to visit one day. This was in the mid-70s, and every kid loved Kiss as far as I knew. We were living in Toledo, Ohio back then, and midwest rock was mostly what was playing on the radio. In the winter of 1975 my father purchased us a juke box, and had it loaded with classic 45s. It ended up in my bedroom when we moved to North Carolina in the summer of 1976, and the size of it scared the hell out of me, even though I loved playing every song on it over and over again.

We moved a lot in the 70s and early 80s. From Toledo, to Greensboro, North Carolina, back to Toledo in 1978, and onto Orange County in Southern California in early 1981, finally the Bay Area in late 1982, where I've lived ever since.

Other than family, music has always been my closest companion. Music is a constant in my life. I purchase vinyl every chance I get. I remember discovering The Beatles when I turned 10. They were amazing to me, immediately. And I felt this pang of guilt for "abandoning" Kiss for another favorite band, It wasn't long after that when I started listening to Led Zeppelin. By then I understood that one could have a few favorite bands. Today I have about 30, and it's ever evolving...as it should.

My parents divorced in 1984, the summer before I turned 14. I was living with my father in Concord, California, and he and I used to travel at least once a month to Rasputin Records in Pleasant Hill, a few miles down the road. If memory serves, on an early visit in 1984 I was flipping through records, randomly, when I came across "Skeletons From The Closet", by the Grateful Dead. Wow. What a cover. What a name! GRATEFUL DEAD! I had no clue what this sounded like, but I knew that I had to have it. The imagery on the cover, was nothing compared to the images the name of the band conjured up. I thought they would sound like hard rock, or metal. Being in middle school in the East Bay, I was listening to Iron Maiden and Judas Priest at that time. My first rock concert was Ronnie James Dio in November 1984 for his "Last in Line" tour at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. Dokken opened. I liked metal, still do, so I had to own that Dead album. I had to love that band. There was no escaping it. I hadn't even listened to one note, and I knew that I was going to be hooked, even though I had no idea that they weren't anything close to Metal.

I moved to San Mateo in the summer of 1985, and quickly found other Dead Heads living around me, including a head shop: The Magic Theater, on El Camino, which I frequented weekly for stickers, patches and posters. During the summer of 1985 a Wednesday afternoon radio show on KZSU-Stanford was playing full shows from the Spring 85 East Coast tour. That blew my mind! I recorded each week. That was how I started my taping/trading obsession.

I was working at Baskin Robbins ice cream in San Mateo, where I met Bob, who was a year older than me, and a few more years a seasoned Dead Head. I spent many hours at his house listening to the Dead. He owned a few shows, and many more Dead records than I had. It was with Bob, his younger sister Beth, and a few others, that I attended my first show on December 30, 1985.

Upon entering the Oakland Coliseum Arena, where just 13 months previous I saw the heaviest Heavy Metal band of the time, I noticed that this audience looked similar, but acted so very differently. Instead of the Metal Head anticipating the head banging that was to come, there were long haired Heads passing joints, and getting ready to dance and twirl. It was a very different vibe. I remember being very naive about the songs they might perform. I thought, like so many other acts, that the Dead would always play their "hits" for their ever-loving fans. I got excited to hear Truckin' specifically, and Sugar Magnolia, not knowing that they never perform the same songs night after night.

I'm not going to give a review of the show that night, though they did a very rockin' version of Sugar Mag's, they also debuted a great version of Dylan's Mighty Quinn. The next night the 2nd set was telecast on KQED. I was at a party with my dad in Brisbane, and a lot of the adults there were heads, so the show was on TV. I was firmly planted in front of the screen, grinning from ear-to-ear, while the adults laughed that a 15 year old was as into the Dead as I was. I video taped and audio taped that show, and shared it with Bob and friends for the weeks following. I couldn't stop playing it. Seriously, I memorized every note of it. Beyond hooked. I was hungry for every tape I could find from then on out.

Living in the home of my "favorite" band was quite advantageous. I hardly missed a Bay Area show until 1993, when it was obvious to me that the band was phoning it in. Jerry was way too strung out by that time. I actually walked out during Drums at my last show in May of 1993, and never went back until I attended the memorial for Jerry at Golden Gate Park with friends, including Zion Godchaux and his mother Donna Jean, who, along with her late husband Keith, were members of the Grateful Dead from 1971-1979.

Coming up in my celebration of the 50th anniversary of my all-time favorite band: My growing tape collection; dancing through the halls of the Henry J Kaiser Auditorium; getting my buddy to put his pants back on at Shoreline; heading out on my own at the tender age of 16 to Laguna Seca in Monterey for a weekend in the sun, and being in the Touch of Grey video; seeing the Dead on the road. Also, alerting Zion that Jerry had died, and my experience at the Jerry memorial with Donna Jean.

As much as I enjoy interviewing bands, I really enjoy bringing my musician friends into the studio to guest DJ. So it just makes sense that guitar slinger, Eric McFadden guest DJd with me Monday night, and to KICK OUT THE JAMS!!! Eric and I are serious brothers-from-another-mother. When it comes to music we could jam/talk/listen-to/scream at/jump up and down to, and generally appreciate whatever you throw our way. It's kind of ridiculous.

And two hours was not near enough time. The music is awesome, the banter is SICK. This is by far one of my most favorite shows, EVER!

Eric posted a video to his Instagram account of us rocking out. You can see it here.

I know you're going to enjoy this one. Please share with music fans everywhere.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen #198: 1974 ANNUAL ANNUAL

1974 wants you to get FUNKY by streaming here.
Roll back into 1974 by downloading here.
Tune into all of my history-making shows, by going here

Once again John Hell mixes up the musical stew by taking you back to a magical year in musical lore: 1974. It's time for my fourth annual "ANNUAL ANNUAL"! 1974 had a little bit of everything: proto-punk, glam-rock, shoe-gaze, funk, soul, avant-jazz, country, western, country-western, and the beginnings of prog-rock. I've got a taste of it all in the next two hours.

I've thrown in some commercials and movie trailers from the era too. Who knew 1974 was so damn cool? Where were you in 1974? I was four years old by years' end. I was living in Toledo, Ohio with my parents and two older sisters. My dad would play a lot of jazz and blues, while my sisters, who were 10 and 12 at the time, were playing mostly Monkeys and Beatles tunes. My mother was into Helen Reddy. Crazy times. My biggest memories of that time had to do with the snow making it difficult for my father to drive to work in the winter.

If I were an adult in 1974 it would have been totally different. It would have been all about getting my ass up to Detroit, Cleveland, and New York City to catch some amazing sounds. I probably would have been spending a lot of time at CBGBs and Max's Kansas City.

Rock Fight 11

Well we've gone and done it again. Last night Ron Donovan and I hosted ROCK FIGHT 11! At this early hour I'm a bit tired; having hosted a six hour show, interviewed three amazing people, played some of the rip-roaringest rock and roll, put up with Ron, and standing on my feet from about 6:30AM-12midnight.

My neck hurts.

In our previous 10! incarnations of Rock Fight, the format was all about not repeating an artist throughout the night. Though this proved to be a challenge, Ron and I were always up for the challenge. You see, rock poster artist Ron Donovan, and yours truly, John Hell, have what quite possibly will prove to be the LARGEST LIVE BOOTLEG COLLECTION IN THE WEST! Really, I stake my 25+ year radio reputation against that claim. We're junkies for the live rock 'n roll, and we want to share our problem with you.

For Rock Fight 11 we changed up the format a bit. Instead of it being a plethora of fabulous finger picking and hellacious head banging from many, MANY bands, we would do 30 minute blocks of a featured band. The set list below includes the song/artist/date/location and who selected the tune (JH=John Hell, RD=Ron Donovan).

We had some special guests in the studio, as always. I want to thank Bassy Stacy and Amy Ace of the all-female KISS cover band, KISSER for stopping by. I've been a fan of Stacy since she was in the Kinks cover band, The Minks. KISSER is amazing! This is the band we've all been waiting for. Listen to the interview and you can hear for yourself how enthusiastic they are about "their" music and the gigs. You have got to see them live. In the meantime check out their YouTube channel.

Even Steffan Chirazi of "So What" the official Metallica fanzine did a set. And what a set it was! He came by to talk about the recent Metallica show in ANTARCTICA! What the what?! Awesome! Steffan is a talented and experienced journalist, so interviewing him is always a blast. You have got to hear his story about Axel Rose. You may remember Steffan from the show he and I co-hosted back in May, following the passing of Margaret Thatcher. Take a listen.

Last night he brought some tasty tracks from the Antarctica set, as well as a few other juicy tidbits.

The banter was brilliant at times, and other times I was losing track of Ron's technical DJ errors. HA! That, and he talking away from the mic, and I wanted to hit him over the head with the turntable more than once. How I love that hobbit-wizard of the ink pulling world.

We'll do it again in June. Until then...

A Season in Hell #123: That's President Hell To You

It's President's Day in the US, and that means that...um, well, er...I'm not sure what that means. We used to have to holidays in February, one for Washington's birthday, and one for Lincoln's birthday. Now it's all on one day. I guess they figured George and Honest Abe are good guys, but why should they get all the glory? I mean, come on, how about Millard Fillmore, or William Howard Taft? And hey, let's give it up for my boy James K. Polk!!! Or how about Lester Young?

I got the day off today, which was nice. So I took the time to prepare a tasty treat of a show for you. The first hour features the holiday theme, some of which are a bit subversive. GASP!

Today also marks the 39th anniversary of the release of the first Kiss album, "Kiss". I pay homage to my first favorite group. I was in the Kiss Army at the age of 5. I truly do want to rock and roll all night, and party every day.

The second hour is all new music, including the great new Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds track "Jubille Street". I can't wait to see them live at the Civic in San Francisco in April. There is never a lack of great new sounds out there, and leave it to the best radio station west of East Orange, New Jersey to give it to you. I share links for then stuff. Click on it, and go buy their music.

As always, support live, local music.
