Hell's Kitchen Radio #568: I Should Not Be Doing That

Oooh, you really need to listen to this show. Some of my finest segues. Radio truly is the art of the segue.

That being said, I took much of the first hour celebrating the birth of the Godfather of Soul. (If I have to tell you who that is, we are really going to have a problem here). I can pretty much guarantee you haven't heard these tunes before, unless I played them here on my show...which it's quite possible I have.

Following that opening I've got some sweet treats for you on Cinco de Mayo, including new music from LA Witch, Death Valley Girls, and Amyl and the Sniffers, and oh so many stories to tell.

And where else can you hear MDC followed up with Ella Fitzgerald? Actually I can name a lot of stations that will probably do that for you. I have memories of playing Megadeth and Tony Bennett back-to-back when I was on KFJC.

I also took a moment to pay tribute to Dave Thomas (not that Dave Thomas) of Pere Ubu, who passed away last week. He also was the co-founder of the Cleveland proto-punk band Rocket From the Tombs. They reunited in 2003 for a few local shows. I threw the classic "Sonic Reducer" (also covered by Dead Boys, a few of whom were former Rocket From the Tombs members), but originally recorded by RFtT.

Alright, get to it already. Check out the Set of the Night.

Enjoy and please share.

First show of the year, and right off the bat I have an exciting interview for you. Prog-space-b-movie-kinda-jazzy-mostly-funky trio Illogistical Resource Dept came into the studio to share their newly released third record: Cacoethes (go ahead, I dare you to pronounce it correctly the first time).

What a delight to have Dan (bass/vocals.effects), Noa (drums) and Mike (guitar) in to talk up such a wonderful collection of new music. What they do is truly magical and I can imagine the challenges of creating this music in a live setting. They talk about this and more coming up.

There are two links above, split into hour one and hour two.

Having fun with the IRD coming up right here.

Enjoy and please go buy their music!!!

Hell's Kitchen Radio #525: Coomer Comes To The Kitchen

Monday night I was excited to host songstress Robin Coomer into the Radio Valencia studio, sharing a few new tunes from her upcoming solo release. As always her voice is in top form. Really, there's nothing quite like it.

From Robin's days in Birdsaw, through to LOOP! Station, Shake Well (er, ummm, that's actually a relative of hers I believe???), to inspired collaboration in Secret Songs, and now to a long overdue (IMHO) solo effort, due out this spring.

Check out my interview with Robin the first hour, as well as a few new tracks she shared.

The remainder of the night continues my focus on great female artists in celebration of Women's History Month.

Enjoy and please share.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #250: Cover Me

Stream the covers, HERE!

Listen into all my shows here, or just scroll down

Some nights I get a bug up my butt to do some kind of theme. Tonight it's all about COVERS! Who doesn't love a good cover tune? Sometimes the cover is better than the original (hence Johnny Cash doing the Eagles better than the Eagles...that's not a hard thing to do, btw. I'm sorry he died, but if I ever hear another Eagles tune it'll be way too soon). Sometimes you had no idea the song was a cover; the artist performed the song better than the original. I should do more cover specials, it almost writes itself.

More great musicians died this past week. WTF is going on?!?!?!? Glenn Frey of the Eagles, Dale "Buffin" Griffin of Mott the Hoople, Gary Loizzo of The American Breed, Mic Gillette of Tower of Power, and the legendary Blowfly all passed into the great bandstand in the sky this past week. I pay tribute in the second hour of the show.

Take a look at the playlist below, and click on the links above to stream or download the show.

No guests this coming Monday night. I have new music from Ty Segall's new band The Muggers, as well as new music from Spacin', and much much more.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #190: Jelly Slather

You're going to want to stream this live band into your soul.
Trust me, download this band onto some device...NOW!
Or perhaps you wish to listen to all of my shows? Good choice. Go HERE!

I absolutely love interviewing bands. I've been interviewing band since my earliest days and radio in the late 1980s. And tonight I was most honored to have not only a super talented and original band, but a very entertaining and vocal interview as well. Royal Jelly Jive joined me in the studio, to talk up their new self-titled release as well as the record release party that just passed.

This six piece gypsy jazz, soul influenced menagerie, With solid and sultry female vocals, and horns to boot, Royal Jelly Jive are a sextet to watch out for. See them soon and a small venue, because it won't take long before they are hitting the big time.

The rest of the program highlighted some Hardly Strictly Bluegrass artists, some Bay Area soul/funk/punk from the 90s, and some classic hip-hop and rap, along with a few fun covers to boot.

Take charge and be large, in the land of the lost.

And as always, enjoy.
