Remember the 90s? I sure do. I don't reminisce that often; I let the music do that for me. When I think of music from the 90s Dinosaur Jr rises near the top for me: out of tune singing, angular and distorted guitar. They encapsulated everything that wasn't mainstream. J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph may have had that ups and downs, but the music was always original and driving. 

Lou Barlow left in 1989 and Murph left a few short years later. I stopped listening to them for a few years, as the sound band drifted away from what I had fallen for. Luckily by 2005 the original lineup reunited, recorded and returned to touring. 

Tonight I feature a show from November 12, 2019, with the original lineup, capturing songs from throughout their career. This a great show in terms of performance and sound quality. If you're a fan of Dinosaur Jr, or you're trying them on for the first time, you are sure to dig this.

I went to Mosswood Meltdown last Saturday, and it was as good as I expected it to be. Niis, Prison Affair,

OSees and DEVO were the real standouts. The sun cleared for a while and I found myself relaxing under the shade of a tree in the vendors area. I bought myself some 45s (my motorcycle bags aren't large enough to hold LPs. I probably saved some money there).

I eventually found myself directly in front of the soundboard hanging out with a few friends, including our Radio Valencia staff photographer Sean Haley, who brought a bunch of die-cut Radio Valencia stickers for us to pass out. Thanks Sean! 

I've seen the OSees many times, and never tire of them. What a brilliant set they brought. This was my first time seeing DEVO, and WOW is all I can say. There's actually a lot more I can say. I can talk about how both Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale are still on top of their game after 50+ years. I can talk about the stellar video graphics projected
throughout the show. I can talk about the setlist that we all sang along with. It was that good.

I can also talk about showing up on Sunday just to find out that I never did purchase a ticket for that day. D'oh! I went home and streamed the day. Shannon and the Clams put on a brilliant set as they always do.

For tonight's show I played a bunch of the 45s I bought at the Meltdown. It's safe to say this is a very punk-forward program. But it's not exclusive. See the setlist below for details.

And then in the middle of the show I come to find out that Jonathan Richman was performing next door at the Make Out Room!!!!! What the what!!!! So I did what any self respecting DJ would do: I found some never before released bootleg demos of Modern Lovers and I played a track as the show was exiting. I really should have grabbed Jonathan for an interview; the fan boy that I am. Alas, he slipped away before I had a chance to even steal a photo of him.

He was there in support of singer-songwriter Jesse DeNatale and the Dreamers, who are playing every Monday night in July. Go see this show!

I'm heading to the Rock and Roll Flea Market on Alameda at Faction Brewing this Saturday afternoon,
followed by the US Finals Air Guitar Championship at The Independent Saturday night. I'll see you at both.

Mondays are fun days...for me. I was realizing I have been hosting a radio show Mondays 8pm since 2000, when I started at San Francisco Liberation Radio. SFLR's history is a rich one and I encourage you to check it out. In short, it was started by Food Not Bombs. They were upset that their arrests for feeding the homeless weren't getting enough media attention, so member Richard Edmondson started the station in his van. Eventually it ended up in his apartment in the Richmond District.

I was working at Trader Joe's in Daly City when I saw a shopper wearing a SFLR t-shirt. I had to inquire. They hipped me to the station, I made a call, and started there a few weeks later.

The rest, as they say, is history. And what a history it is, including the raid by the FCC using SFPD. We were a very politicized staff. And we were a pirate radio station, so it was only a matter of time before the Man came knocking. Or more like battering ramming, which they did.

We fought the good fight, and even set some precedent in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Because of our fight urban areas are allowed to file for low power FM (LPFM) licenses. Before our case against the feds, the FCC policy only allowed rural areas to file for a LPFM. Yay SFLR!

I left there after the raid, ended up at Pirate Cat, then FCCFree, and eventually built Radio Valencia, all hosting the Monday 8pm slot. Time flies.

As for this show, it's more of what you have come to expect: diverse, and leaning punk. But there's quite a bit more than that, including a couple sets from a new member of our staff: The Archivist, who will be on Sundays 8-10pm Pacific. Coincidentally, he used to be a student of mine many moons ago. He has excellent musical taste, which has nothing to do with me. 

There's a tribute to Wayne Kramer, who passed away last week, and a happy birthday to Bob Marley. 

Oh, one final comment about Mondays: the Giants have a winning record on Monday nights. True story.

When I was considering what year I was going to play for you for my 13th annual Annual Annual, I was a bit stumped. Every year has something amazing to offer. Where do I go? Back to the 50s? I haven't done that decade yet. Something in the past decade? Too soon? I turned 21 in 1991 (you do the math). Sounded perfect to me.

I was living in my first apartment, in Redwood City, CA. I was on the air at KFJC, hosting a morning show. There was no such genre known as Alternative at that time, until Smells Like Teen Spirit hit the airwaves. Thanks Nirvana. Ah, the memories. 

And college radio was popping back in 1991. Hip Hop, metal, indie-rock, industrial, shoegaze. There was so much to play back then. So many bands went on to influence the generation that followed. I'm not one to live in the past, but a show like this one allows me to shine a light on a year that really set a standard for what would follow.

Sadly, this was, in my opinion, the last year that non-commercial and college radio would be on the forefront when it came to breaking new artists. The consolidation of radio, Napster, and then streaming took that power out the hands of programmers, those who live and breathe music, and placed it into the hands of the corporatocracy. I was interning at KRQR back then in San Fransisco. I recall the music director blindly putting the playlist together for the DJs, without a thought of what songs worked well together. She was pulling from national lists of songs in the AOR top 20. Now MDs just allow Spotify to dictate the playlists. It's insulting. I'll remind you all that I do not have a Spotify account.

That's why you tuned in tonight, and that's why I have this show to share with you, that will take you back to a time when the artists and the DJs teamed together to bring your something special on the regular.

You know I start this show out talking about why I do what I do. This is all about taking two hours and paining an aural picture for your mind. Spotify can't do that. Commercial radio stations won't do that. They can't risk losing their sponsors. Spotify has no soul. Commercial radio exists to steal your soul and your time. And how insulting are they? 

Want to play "What's on the Bone"? I bet you guessed right. I don't want you to ever be able to guess what I'm going to play on my show. Yes, there are a handful of artists who I have been known to play more often than others. Just scroll to the bottom of this page and you can see for yourself. But I mean, c'mon, look at who those artists are? Melvins over 100 times! The top ten don't get so much airplay anywhere else. OK, maybe the Grateful Dead? 

I was all over the place on this show. Experimental, garage-punk, Americana, Bluegrass, free-Jazz, Soul-Jazz, both American and British Punk, a tribute to Jeff Beck, British Rock, Greek Psych-Groove, Neo-Psych and Gospel. It's all Grunge vs. BritPop tonight on Hell's Kitchen with John Hell and David Fraser.

It's hard to believe that the 90s ended 15 years ago. It's even harder to believe that Grunge started more than 25 years ago. That's just ridiculous to me. What's even more ridiculous to me is that I was in my 20s that long ago. Like many, I too was smitten when I first encountered the early sounds of Grunge and Britpop and Shoegaze, starting around 1989. And who wouldn't you be? The distorted guitar, the pounding rhythms of the drums and the bass, the lyrics so full of angst and Generation X-style miasma. Everyone called us Slackers, but I never saw us like that. There was some serious talent coming out of that time. I remember so many friends being into bands like Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, and of course Pearl Jam. I couldn't stand any of those bands. I remember asking all of them, out of all of these bands that you love so much who will you remember, and which will be played regularly on the radio 20 years from now? I correctly predicted that Nirvana would stand the test of time, and not because they were so brilliant, which I do think that they were, but mostly because they borrowed from heavy hitters, such as the Pixies and the Beatles, and also because Kurt Cobain was really an amazing songwriter.

My favorite band of the time and still in my top five today, is Mudhoney. And why not? What an amazing band. If you know your history, then you know that Mark Arm and Steve Turner only started Mudhoney as a bit of a joke and a side project. They never meant for it to go as far as it has. And though it's hard to see how the Melvins are considered the godfathers of Grunge, I can appreciate their obvious influence on the genre, while still recognizing that there really isn't any grunge in them at all.

As for Britpop, there are a few bands in the genre that I took two. Mostly Swervedriver to be honest. I also like The Vaseline's, and My Bloody Valentine. But I mostly looked at Britpop as a genre that was trying to rip off what was happening in Seattle. I may get hate mail for that, which is fine, but I standby it.

This show reminded me so much of my early days at KFJC. David was a great co-host too! David grew up in Seattle during the Grunge heyday and knows his music history. We both soon realized that this is obviously part one in an ongoing series. Listen for David's return in the months to come. He may even take a shot at joining the ranks of great Radio Valencia DJs. Excellent!

A Season in Hell #85: Record Store Day Is Very Very Good To Me

A few days post-Record Store Day and I'm still reeling with the fact that I was broke going into it and even more broke now. But that's how the 12" spins I wager. Anyhow, RSD was a complete success where the radio broadcast is concerned.

I got down to Vinyl Solution at 10:30, where the owner, Tommy, warned me NOT to go through the RSD bins until the store was open. He didn't want the line-up outside to get pissed at him. I abided by his "request", though I did sneak a peek or three. Hee hee.

The equipment for the broadcast showed up late, so by the time the store was open at 11 I had to set up. I did jump into a box of records right at 11 though, and grabbed some tasty treats, many of which I played tonight. See below for the playlist.

Jack Champion brought down the gear, and we got rolling on the radio at noon. I was thrilled to be co-hosting the opening with my radio hero, M. Dung. He's a serious influence on my being in radio in the first place. It's hard to put into words, but it was from listening to him host the morning show on KFOG back in the 80s that sold me on getting into the wild world of local radio. Unfortunately for me, by the time I got into it the heyday of commercial radio was passing. Luckily for me I found non-commercial radio. Ha!

Anyway, the broadcast was a ton of fun. Lots of people, and the Feral Moon Band played. I got to interview Tommy and he gave me a discount on records. You really can't ask for too much more than that.

The first hour tonight is a selection of the music I got at Record Store Day; all vinyl. The second hour is my third part of eight celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Grateful Dead's EPIC 1972 European tour. I'm playing selections from 04/17/72 & 04/21/72.
