Every year leading up to my Annual Annual, I suffer and strain to decide on a year I want to focus on. This year was no different. Do I want to reach back pre-1970? How about something a little more recent, like the lost year of 2020? I asked for suggestions, and a bunch flew my way, but the one that really stuck came from my buddy, and teaching colleague, Eric, who suggested 1978. The emergence of English post-punk, metal was evolving, funk was redefining itself against a backdrop of too much disco. There is a lot to choose from when it comes to 1978.

I took at least a week to pour over my options. In the end I sat with approximately four hours of music to fit into about an hour forty minutes, mixed with talk and highlights from the year. I tried to mix it up, and keep you on your toes. I really appreciate all of the many comments that kept coming during the show, and I'm sorry I didn't take any requests. Shows like these are pretty well mapped out by the time I flip the switch.

Take a look at the playlist below, and click the link up above to stream or download this bad boy.

Here's last Monday's show. Just take a look at the playlist! WOW! Are you kidding me? And new music from local pop-rockers The Y Axes. I love them live, by the way.

Tonight is my last show for a while. I'm getting knee surgery on Wednesday for a torn ACL and ripped up meniscus. Fun times. I may just die, so you're really going to want to tune in tonight from 8-10PM (PDST). I'm going to play all my favorites. I only have two hours, so who the hell knows what that'll sound like. Perhaps I'll just play them all at the same time. That should be fun...for me.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen #198: 1974 ANNUAL ANNUAL

1974 wants you to get FUNKY by streaming here.
Roll back into 1974 by downloading here.
Tune into all of my history-making shows, by going here

Once again John Hell mixes up the musical stew by taking you back to a magical year in musical lore: 1974. It's time for my fourth annual "ANNUAL ANNUAL"! 1974 had a little bit of everything: proto-punk, glam-rock, shoe-gaze, funk, soul, avant-jazz, country, western, country-western, and the beginnings of prog-rock. I've got a taste of it all in the next two hours.

I've thrown in some commercials and movie trailers from the era too. Who knew 1974 was so damn cool? Where were you in 1974? I was four years old by years' end. I was living in Toledo, Ohio with my parents and two older sisters. My dad would play a lot of jazz and blues, while my sisters, who were 10 and 12 at the time, were playing mostly Monkeys and Beatles tunes. My mother was into Helen Reddy. Crazy times. My biggest memories of that time had to do with the snow making it difficult for my father to drive to work in the winter.

If I were an adult in 1974 it would have been totally different. It would have been all about getting my ass up to Detroit, Cleveland, and New York City to catch some amazing sounds. I probably would have been spending a lot of time at CBGBs and Max's Kansas City.

A Season in Hell #119: Hellnation

I'm without my computer tonight and to be honest, I'm scared.

Hold me.

So I played all vinyl tonight. And damn, that was fun. I have a lot of music to choose from, so if i don't have my iTunes to keep me warm, the smooth, scratchy sounds emanating from my LPs will keep me toasty indeed.

As always lots of genres to enjoy. Some themes as well, including a set of ROCK that the Melvins have covered, but by the original bands! How amazing is that?

You just know you want to download this gem. Well here ya go.
How about you stream it on your favorite device? OK then, here.
