How is it I just can come to getting these shows up any sooner than almost a week after broadcast these days? What the ever loving fuck?!?!?!?

Could it be I'm short on bandwidth? 

Ummmmm, I don't know. 

Full time teacher, heading into the final weeks of the school year, where I need to get my seniors across the line, produce an annual show for 1400 in attendance; grade essays, final draft for the final exams, run student elections, raise an eight year old, guide a 21 year old, co-produce a few live shows this summer, help run a community radio station. 

Yeah, I don't know.

The best part about my show last Monday, atcually there were a few great things; was hosting musician and sound engineer Chris Greacen from Elegant Trash. He brought some incredible live tracks with him and lively conversation. And to top it off we share the same birthday!!! Chris was in talking up the Bang The Bay series of shows that happen at the Mabuhay Gardens, Ivy Room, and Point Emery. Check them out when they come to your town.

It was not like looking in a mirror, but you know. 

And then the Common Sense Advisory Committee showed up! 

It was like putting on your favorite sweater. Full disclosure: I don't wear sweaters, but if I did you know I'd be wearing this group all day every day. Katrina, Daniel, Ignacio and Molly showed up (don't even ask where John was....HA!!!) to be my live studio audience. They are distracting in all the ways I truly appreciate being distracted. It's like a game of test the DJ. Can they distract me enough for there to be dead air? Tune in and find out.

I'm hilarious...and delirious. Seriously, I have no bandwidth.

I was talking with a friend of mine earlier today about what makes a good radio show and about how I prepare, week to week? 

I think a good radio show, focused on music, comes from a host that listens to a lot of music a lot of the time, and is excited to curate a show that features tunes in sets that flow from one song to the next, regardless of genre. As a matter of fact I really love pulling off cross-genre sets.

As for how I prepare for my shows? I listen to a lot of music throughout the week, and it's inevitable that I'm going to hear a few tunes that I'm itching to play for you all, so I make a note of that.

Then I literally go through my record shelves and pull music that's calling to me. I also have a strong desire to play new music each week. I prefer to start a set with something new, or something that's relevant and timely. 

I purchase music almost weekly, so there's always something new on my show. And if there's a tribute to a fallen artist or one with a birthday that I just have to call out, or a show I've been to, or one upcoming, then something is going to end up in a set.

And then in the studio I have a stack sitting in front of me that I pull from based on the song that is currently playing. Honestly, there's not much more to it than that. More often that not I pull it off. I never phone it in. 

As for tonight's show, I noticed as I was pulling music that almost every artist tonight is American. I started out the show with some rural blues, moved onto to be-bop and post-bop jazz. Then onto some soul and funk. I made my way to some west coast country and psychobilly, before getting a bit darker in the goth/post-punk vein. Then came the garage/shoegaze/psych, followed by some new dissonance post-post-punk, 60s prog-psych, new Melvins (a genre all their own), more post-post-punk, punk/metal, and finally a tribute to Brian Wilson to close it all out.

And hot damn if this show doesn't flow. Check out me trying to tie it all together!

So as for how do I prepare for my show, after being in radio for 35+ years, and a whole hell of a lot of listening? A lot of this is second nature. But I can assure you I will never rest when it comes to preparing the best in quality non-commercial radio for you, dear listener.

I left Twitter a few years ago. It always upset me to scroll through it. I held onto the account so I could share my radio blog on there, tagging the artists I play. I never missed it, and I never thought I would. When Musk took it over I deleted my account. I don't need to share my data with that guy. It appears Twitter drives people to this page. I've gone from ~150 per post to ~10. ugh. I do not want to back to Twitter. 

Well I guess you lucky few get to enjoy all this music just for yourselves. Who am I to keep you from sharing it on your own social media platforms?

Standing in the newly painted Radio Valencia studio really fills me with pride, and inspires me to put on a quality show for you all. That's not saying the other weeks were phoned in, it just feels like I walked into a brand new studio and I'm really jazzed about it. 

Radio Valencia is a collection of jocks who have come together to play our favorite music for you. Some of us have been at this radio game a few decades now. RV has been going strong-ish since 2010. Having a storefront location this last year has been a huge boon for us, and we're now in a position to make the most of it; hence the facelift. Big thanks to the Tuesday night crew, Culturefest's Lilly and Joe. These two really went all out. I don't think the attached pictures do it justice, but they'll have to do. When I walked in Monday night I could have sworn the studio was actually bigger than before!

Tonight's show had a lot of emotion throughout it. New music from Emily Clark and Fanstastic Negrito. There's a 45th anniversary expanded edition Bob Marley, and a build up to this weekend's Mosswood Meltdown in the second hour. And George Carlin speaks about a timely issue beyond the grave.

How do I pack so much in? You'll just have to tune in Monday's 8-10PM PDST and find out.

I was told by a dear friend that I'm not a bad guy, I'm just not all that good either. HA! I love it! That's Hell for ya. I'm just pretty good at being pretty bad. And I enjoy laughing at that, and myself, often. I birthed John Hell in August 1994, when I co-founded Radio Free Burning Man. I'm sure I wrote about this somewhere else on this blog. We were all KFJC DJs and I didn't want to use my airname, Reverend Dah Wave, for the event in the desert. So I needed another moniker. 

I had seen the Rowdy Roddy Piper film "Hell Comes to Frogtown", a post-apocalyptic tale about a guy who survived the devastation and now needs to save all of these extremely hot women (of course), being held in captivity by the Frog King. I love Rowdy Roddy Piper. He was always my favorite wrestler. Pipers Pit was the best part of WWF on Saturday afternoons. And "They Live" will always be a classic. "I've come to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum". I mean, come on! Anyway, I thought Piper's name in "Hell Comes To Frogtown" was John Hell. And I thought "Hell YES!", what an excellent name for RFBM. Ends up his name was Frank Hell. That's super lame. No. So John Hell it was and it shall remain, even if Discovery Channel decided it was too adult for their precious little cable outlet and changed it to "Helle" for the four hour "Power Tool Drag Races" special. Whatever, I got paid. 

Initially I was thinking Hell would be all in your face; especially for Burning Man. I was purposely insulting to the organization, just to keep them honest. Now that John Hell about to turn 27(?!?!?!?!) he's much more reserved and sly. I like to poke fun in a more political manner, and to myself. Just what you've come to know and love. You do love me, don't you? (crickets)

As for this show, lot's of new music, Kate Vargas, the Scientists, Angel Bat Dawid, Gojira, Negativland, and Oh Sees. And everything else is gravy. 

Also, you get a treat, one of my oldest and greatest friends is about to start a brand new show Wednesday's 10-midnight (Pacific) on Radio Valencia. His moniker is The Alchemist. The show is a mouthful: Conflux Cornucopia Cerebellum Cocktail Hour! The Alchemist is a walking musical encyclopedia. I know you're going to dig his show. He took over a couple sets in the second hour of this show. I marked it so you know. You're welcome.

When you start out in non-commercial radio today there's such a learning curve when it comes to deep musical knowledge and history of the many genres one can investigate. When I started in 1988 I never thought that I would be able to conquer that mountain of musical mayhem. Almost 30 years later I find that I have a fairly intimate knowledge of many genres: early Jazz, Bebop, Post-bop, Chicago Blues, 60s/70s neo-Punk, 70s Classic Rock, 60s/70s Underground Funk, 60s American Psychedelia, Kraut Rock, 2000s Stoner Rock, all-things James Brown, Miles Davis, Grateful Dead, Melvins, and on and on and on...

I really feel for the new breed DJs who want to break into this scene today. There's just too much damn great music to listen to. I was looking at a collection of digitized music of mine recently, and I cannot believe how much I haven't even spent time listening to and getting to know on a deeper level. What the hell is wrong with me?!?!?! I really think that I need a gofundme for people to contribute to so I can take time off work so I can be able learn all this music to better entertain you.

There's a world of great music out there to enjoy. I appreciate you tuning in every Monday night, and/or streaming/downloading these shows to help you broaden your musical horizons.

The second hour still focuses on some recent live cuts I've recently found, but other than that it's another dive into the music library of HELL!

One thing you didn't witness during the show was the conflict I was having with the turntables. That was fun. for whatever reason I just could not get the turntable mixer to play through the main board. By the third set I had it all dialed in and the show really took off from there. I think it's those little issues that really keep me on my toes and have me pulling some righteous tunes out of my proverbial hat. I'd like to take this time to thank my 5th generation iPod from 2008 for all its help during that brief but anxious crisis. Together we made it through to the musical promised land.

I've been hosting a radio show on and off since about 1990 when I was at KFJC. I never counted the number of shows I hosted there, but between 1990-1997, probably over 1000 weekly shows. Those were great times, and by far the best education I could have dreamed of. When I started Radio Valencia back in 2010 I had no idea how it might grow and how long we would be around. Monday night I hosted my 300th show, not counting the many specials I've done. What a fun milestone this is.

I started off the night with 15 minutes of Facebook Live, which I'm still not totally comfortable doing, but at least it's a way for my family to see me in action. HA! My guest, managing editor of local magazine "Haight Street Voice", Linda Kelly spent the rest of the evening with me talking about the importance of having a regular publication in the city that supports local voice, whether they be citizens, homeless, merchants, artists, musicians, or whomever. Linda knows her history of the area like the back of her hand, and wants to use HSV as a medium to bring people together of various backgrounds, all of whom share their love of the city, and the Haight specifically. I concur. It was a fabulous interview. She turned the mic on me in the second hour, asking about my thoughts on show 300 and where I'd like to see Radio Valencia go in the future.

Monday night I filmed my show on FB live. A few weeks back my guest, and talented chartreuse, Phat Man Dee did this and we had over 100 people tuned in. Why not tonight? Then again, why the hell would anyone want to watch a radio show? Really, there is nothing exciting about this. OK, I do a bit of a song and dance during my show when I'm off mic, that's for sure. Other than that???

Lots of rockin' about on this night. New music spread throughout, including new Zig Zags, Crystal Fairy (Melvins side project), Ty Segall, Blind Shake, Meatbodies, King Gizzard, and Red Fang. Also, it's the 50th anniversary of the release of the first Doors record (feel old yet?).

I throw in some covers from Thee Headcoats (did you know Billy Childish was a renowned book translator?), Bob Seger (there's a good story I tell in there), Nicki Bluhm, Minutemen, and Bonnie "Prince" Billy.

I'm like a walking music encyclopedia for this show. Check it out and share it far and wide. I probably won't make it a habit of doing the FB live thing, because who wants to watch a DJ stand around picking their nose trying to decide what to play next?

Spinning a two hour set is always a hoot for me, but having a co-host who meshes with my style, and also knows how to throw me a surprise of three is always a real pleasure. On Monday's show I was thrilled to have Radio Valencia's Gatsby Fassbinder, host of Tighten Up Your Wig, Thursday's 4-6PM. If you like my show you're going to love his. Like myself, Gatsby is a walking encyclopedia for all things that he knows he knows. His tracks are marked by "GB".

New music from Melvins side project, Crystal Fairy, featuring Teri Gender Bender of Le Butcherettes. Also, new music from Meatbodies from their latest LP "Alice". A brand new 7" is out from Zig Zags that is more metal-y than previous tracks, but no less scary. A classic Iggy Pop/James Williamson track from "Kill City", a love song from Diamanda Galas, and the greatest fucking rock band of all time (next to the Melvins) SLEEP!

It's safe to say that tonight was all about the ROCK! The talk is cheap and so are we. Not much more to add. I'd prefer to allow the music do the rocking.
