You would think since I'm only getting about four hours a sleep, having a newborn in the house, I wouldn't be up for doing my weekly show. You would be incorrect. What the hell do you know anyway? It's not like I was looking to run out on the little one and my bride. No, no, no. It's more about taking the time away so when I come back I'm even more hot to care for all-things-baby!

It was so great getting back on the horse tonight after three weeks away. The playlist felt fresh, and your comments kept me on edge...er, I mean happier than a baby with a fresh boob in the mouth!

You'll have to forgive me, I have baby-brain right now. That being said, I think you will agree that I can still throw together one hell of a playlist. Oh, I'm thinking about starting a campaign to get a local commercial radio station (107.7 The Bone, KFOG, Live-105) to allow me to program their station for one hour during the evening drive. I promise not to play anything with bad words...in English. Really though, the dreck they are playing is insulting. Give me one hour and I know you're going to have listeners hungry for more.

Until that day, keep tuning in Monday's 8-10PM and I'l give it my best; baby-brain and all.

Oh boy, Memorial Day once again. We really do need to stop having these. Do me a favor, if you really want to thank a veteran, punch a politician in the face. Tell them John Hell said it was OK.

The first hour features my subversive Memorial Day "celebration". I don't think you can make popsicles with them. I'll have to ask Ivanka. That woman can make a popsicle out of any national holiday.

I gave tickets away tonight to go see Dave and Phil Alvin and the Guilty Ones at Great American Music Hall for this Thursday night. This promises to be a great show, so congrats to the winners and I'll see you there. BTW, I give tickets away from time to time, so tune in and WIN!

The second hour of my show was yet another tribute to a fallen musical comrade. Vocalist and keyboardist Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers Band passed away this past weekend at the age of 69, from complications from liver cancer at his home in Savannah, Georgia. Growing up I was a huge fan of Duane-era Allman Brothers. What a band! Someone asked me once, "if the Grateful Dead were playing at one club, and down the street Duane-era Allman Brothers were playing at another club, which band would you go and see?" That is a damn tough question to answer? Though they are both "jam" bands, the Allman's always were so in a more structured vein. And there jams could really fly. Consummate musical professionals. I think I would have wanted to have seen the Allman's, especially if this were 1971. That band was on FIRE that year. Just take a listen to the Live at the Fillmore East box set. Each note is alive with energy. Well, he's with Duane, Berry, and Butch now, getting the band back together. I can only imagine how much fun that must be. Dreams, indeed.

Full disclosure: I never once saw the Allman Brothers live. Not once. I own quite a few live boots of theirs too. They do not support live taping or trading of their music, so shows, especially soundboards are very hard to come by. I'm lucky enough to know people who know people. I pulled out some tasty treats from my collection to showcase Gregg and the whole band, but I stayed in the Duane-era world that I love so much.

Next Monday night on my show I'm excited to have P-Funk guitarist RonKat Spearman in the studio to share his many road stories and play some music from his own band Katdelic. This ought to be a lot of fun. Tune in Monday, June 5th, 8-10PM on Radio Valencia.

Thanks to everyone who came out to Folio Books in Noe Valley last week to see me interview local music critic Joel Selvin about his book "Altamont". Joel is a great interviewee. I ask him one question and he takes it from there. He almost seemed a little too happy to be there. He sold a few books, and a couple people even asked me to autograph it! Sure, why not?

Monday night I filmed my show on FB live. A few weeks back my guest, and talented chartreuse, Phat Man Dee did this and we had over 100 people tuned in. Why not tonight? Then again, why the hell would anyone want to watch a radio show? Really, there is nothing exciting about this. OK, I do a bit of a song and dance during my show when I'm off mic, that's for sure. Other than that???

Lots of rockin' about on this night. New music spread throughout, including new Zig Zags, Crystal Fairy (Melvins side project), Ty Segall, Blind Shake, Meatbodies, King Gizzard, and Red Fang. Also, it's the 50th anniversary of the release of the first Doors record (feel old yet?).

I throw in some covers from Thee Headcoats (did you know Billy Childish was a renowned book translator?), Bob Seger (there's a good story I tell in there), Nicki Bluhm, Minutemen, and Bonnie "Prince" Billy.

I'm like a walking music encyclopedia for this show. Check it out and share it far and wide. I probably won't make it a habit of doing the FB live thing, because who wants to watch a DJ stand around picking their nose trying to decide what to play next?

Did you know that I am hip with the progressive political crowd here in San Francisco? It's true. Case in point, my guest tonight was not other than San Francisco's District 11 supervisor, John Avalos. John has been on my show before as have a few other County supervisors, and mayors. Tonight John spoke about his proposed Bike Yield Law, lowering the voting age to 16, and affordable housing.

He also spoke quite a bit about the history of our current mayor, And his thoughts about the backroom dealings here in San Francisco. You might find out of interest.

This was one GREAT show. Six hours of blistering live performances, and two amazing interviews. For the past 13 Rock Fights, poster artist Ron Donovan has joined me in the studio. Due to unforeseen (but predicted) circumstances, Ron was unable to join me tonight. It didn't matter though, I would have kicked his ass up and down the airwaves like I do every Rock Fight.

I open the show with some great 60s jams. Just look at the playlist! It's rock and psych, leading into proto-punk in the second hour. 70s punk takes over the rest of the hour, before author Linda Kelly comes in to talk up the new edition of her 1995 book "Deadheads", just in time for the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary shows (which I'll be attending in Santa Clara this weekend). You have got to read this book! So many great stories. My interview with Linda is a ton of fun. We played about 90 minutes of brilliant live Dead, from the 67-92. She'll be in the parking lot selling and signing books all weekend long. And she'll be at Proper Fox jewelry store tonight signing and selling.

Local singer-songwriter Travis Hayes came by to talk up his upcoming show, this Saturday night at the Great American Music Hall. He played a few tunes, live in the studio, and shared some stories. What a great guy. Go to this show, and support live, local music.

I finished up the show with some classic rock standouts!!! Led Zeppelin, Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, and more.

I love hosting this show, but six hours is exhausting. And having no co-host just will not do. This December, sound engineer John Karr will be co-hosting Rock Fight 15 with me. John has been doing live and studio sound for over 25 years, and has recorded thousands of great local shows. I look forward to kicking his ass. Tune in.

It was Memorial Day last Monday night. How am I supposed to celebrate this day? I think the playlist says it all. I'm certainly not going to make it all about John Philip Sousa. I'm a pacifist at heart. Really. I don't see any reason why the working class would ever want war. War is only for war profiteers.

In the second hour I feature some new music from Thee Oh Sees (who are coming to The Chapel in SF in July), Metz (who are playing Outside Lands in SF in August), White Hills, Queen Crescent (playing at El Rio in July), Tad Doyle's new band: Brothers of the Sonic Cloth, and Father John Misty. It's a fun night, worth the price of my rants alone.

I'm not on the air tonight, as I'm back east in South Carolina for a few days. I haven't been here since I was a wee lad, visiting Myrtle Beach back in 1977. Though I would never wish to leave my beautiful San Francisco for anywhere else, traveling to destinations like Hilton Head, South Carolina does indeed clear my head.

I'll be back on the air next Monday night, with members of Illogistical Resources Department stopping by to talk up their new release, which you can stream here.

A Season in Hell #97: Catch A Rin Tin Tiger By Its Tail

Like many of you who live in San Francisco, I like to take advantage of all the free goings on in our fair city during the summer months. One of my absolute favorite things to do is Sunday Streets. This year, they were kind enough to allow the Mission to host four Sundays-worth of events. Lucky us.

At the beginning of July Radio Valencia broadcasted from in front of Stage Werx from 11-4. We had ten DJs, myself included, host 30-minute sets. I cannot convey to you the amount of pleasure we had hanging out in the streets with everyone. What a blast. My ladies and I walked around for a bit to take in all of the non-car-related ambiance. So many great local shops hawking their wares on the sidewalk, and live music in the intersections.

One of the bands, whom I've seen out there on previous Sunday Streets' was local alt-folk trio Rin Tin Tiger. Formerly Westwood & Willow, these homespun characters create a magnificent stew of unique musicianship, that also carries some of their influences, including Bob Dylan, Nick Drake and Morrissey. They've been playing a lot around the Bay Area since 2010, and released an excellent self-titled 6-song EP in 2011. Their first full-length release, "Toxic Pocketbook" is due for release this Thursday, July 26th. Their having a CD release party at Great American Music Hall that night. Go check them out.
