Scott Amendola doesn’t just play the drums — he opens up a whole other world with them. He’s one of those rare musicians who can sit behind a kit and make it sound like a full conversation is happening. Over the years he’s worn a lot of hats: composer, bandleader, and the kind of drummer other inventive musicians want in their corner.

Scott grew up in New Jersey, studied at Berklee in Boston, and then made his way west. Out here he became a key part of the amazing TJ Kirk quartet with Charlie Hunter, Will Bernard, and John Schott — their second record, If Four Was One, even got a Grammy nomination.

And he’s not afraid to think big. In 2011 he premiered an orchestral piece called Fade to Orange with the Oakland East Bay Symphony, joined by Nels Cline and Trevor Dunn. That’s the kind of career Scott’s had — one foot in the small, intimate club, and the other in these ambitious projects that stretch way beyond genre.

It was my absolute pleasure to host Scott in the studio on Monday night where he shared some great stories from his youth, where his grandfather, jazz guitarist played a major inspiration in his life. We spoke about the great risks he took with his music, the amazing people he has been able to record, perform and tour with, as well the current challenges of surviving as a full time musician.

I also asked Scott to bring some music that he enjoys listening to. I surprised him with some of his own live shows. I peppered some tracks in throughout the show. See the playlist below for details.

OK wow, I so love discovering an artist that just blows my mind. Tonight I have TWO for YOU!

First up is a neo-psychadelic group I found when crate digging at Amoeba in Berkeley about a year ago. I knew by the cover this was going to be something special. Even the clerk at the counter told me they had been eyeballing this one. Matt Valentine and Erica Elkin (MV and EE) have been recording together since 2004. They have about 20 releases to their name! WTF? Where have I been?

This show is a rare one, as I have yet to find anything else of theirs making the rounds. Recorded January 19, 2020 at Baby's All Right in Brooklyn, New York. It runs about 36 minutes, and is a tasty soundboard, recorded by Alex Hardwood, and mixed and produced by Eric P for NYCTaper.com

Our headliner tonight deserves your attention. Don't go telling me that you aren't into Jazz, especially if you have no idea what you're talking about. Kamasi Washington embodies so much of the soul of jazz, funk, fusion, soul, R&B, rock, punk, groove...and genres that haven't even been named yet. I cannot stop moving when he's playing. It's as if he can't contain all the movement that's inside of himself, and he needs you to take it off his hands, so he throws it at you through his horn.

There was Jazz playing in my house growing up, but it wasn't until I hosted a Jazz specialty show on KFJC for four years, that I really dove deep into the genre. There's so much to discover in this truly original American genre. 

Monday night, starting at 6pm PDST I've got two great shows to share with you.

First up is the currently departed saxophonist Pharoah Sanders in all his blazing glory, live from the Early Bird Jazz Club, in Antibes, France, July 21, 1968. This show is early in his career as a band leader, and features the late, great Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Norris Jones on bass, Majeed Shabazz on drums, with guest Michel Roques on tenor sax. Sanders died on September 24, 2022, at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 81.

Our headliner tonight is undisputed heavyweight jazz vocalist of the civil rights era. The one and only Nina Simone. I can't believe I have yet to play a show of hers on this show. Some might tell me I need to play more female Jazz vocalists. To that I say "no thank you!". OK, actually there is a lot more room for female Jazz vocalists. I'm just partial to Miss Simone.

This show is taken from a professional video, recorded March 25, 1969 at the Olympia Theater, Paris France. Hey, two shows from France tonight, less than a year apart, by two Black musicians who were treated with disdain by White American, just to be loved by the French. What a surprise! This entire show features the brilliant piano playing and singing of one of the most original performers ever to grace a stage.

This show features Nina on vocals and piano, Al Schackman on guitar, Gene Perla on bass, Don Alias on drums. Weldon Irving plays organ, with Gina Rothchild and Doris Willingham on backing vocals.

I love Jazz. I thank my dad for having it playing in the house while I was growing up in the 70s and 80s. for my dad it was in the background, but for me any music that was playing was important. If it was good enough for it to be played in my house, then it must be something important for me to hear. 

I'm the one person in my family to have gone the deepest where music is concerned. This is especially true when it comes to a genre like Jazz. I fell in love with Miles Davis first, but it didn't take me long to discover John Coltrane. From there all the be-bop greats came flooding through, leading to more contemporary artists including John Zorn, Sex Mob, and Angel Bat Dawid.

On this show I have three artists, two of whom have passed, that made their mark on the genre known as Jazz. Jazz is many genres, and tonight you'll get a taste of two: Jazz-Funk, and Be-Bop.

First up, I welcome you to a small club, the Village Gate in the great Jazz city of New York City. The artist is the late, great Gil Scott-Heron with Brian Johnson and the Midnight Band, sometime in 1976. If you have ever lived in, or around a big city anywhere in the world, or if you have ever been in one long enough to catch it's flavor, you need this music.

This music speaks the city, with latin-tinged jazz fusion, street-corner down-home musicians playing the local riffs with bongos and drums. In this case, the neighborhood kid made it big, but not big enough that everybody has heard of him. It is a low-down dirty shame that you probably haven't heard of Gil-Scott Heron. But, you need to hear him, just the same. And, after your jaw drops and shatters in a million pieces on the floor, you might ask yourself: What the fuck happened to this kind of feeling?

In this case, the city is New York, but don't let that fool or bother you. The fact that it is New York means that this particular kind of music is the real thing, not some plastic wannabe or club act. It is genuine, gritty, soul conscious, and completely real.

Our headliners tonight feature the great drummer Max Roach, who crossed from early bop to be-bop, towards hard-pop, free-jazz, and even some funk. With him is a living legend on the saxophone, Sonny Rollins. We even get Freddie Hubbard on trumpet for the first few tracks. 

This amazing show is from a European tour in 1966. On this stop in Konserthuset, Stockholm, Sweden, November 10, 1966, Roach, Rollins and crew play three devastatingly solid tunes in one hour!

When you were young and your heart was an open book, you used to say live and let live. You know you did, you know, you did, you know you did. But in this ever changing world in which we're living makes you give in and cry...

Say listen to John Zorn!

Anyway, that came to mind. Yeah.

I have an inordinate amount of John Zorn-related shows from so many of his projects, that I could easily host a weekly special on him and not repeat a project for a few months. That's a lot. I got into Zorn during my days at KFJC. I think it was about 1993 when I first heard Masada, with Zorn, Dave Douglas, Greg Cohen and Joey Baron. 

It didn't take me long to gobble up all of the Zorn I could find. I think Naked City and Cobra were next. WOW, that's different. And then came the one-two punch of Electric Masada and Masada String Trio and I was hooked. I mean really hooked. 

Tonight on the show I'm excited feature to full sets from the Big Ears Fest in Knoxville, Tennessee, March 27, 2022.

Words won't do this justice. Have you ever heard Alice Coltrane? Have you ever hear OF Alice Coltrane? One could call her the widow of the late great, Jazz pioneer John Coltrane, and that would of course be true, but it doesn't do her justice. 

Alice Coltrane is deserving of her own genre-leading, genre-bending titles. She was no coattail rider. Alice Coltrane was a force! 

Alice Coltrane (née McLeod; August 27, 1937 – January 12, 2007), also known by her adopted Sanskrit name Turiyasangitananda, was an American jazz musician and composer, and in her later years a swamini. An accomplished pianist and one of the few harpists in the history of jazz, she recorded many albums as a bandleader, beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s for Impulse! and other record labels.^[1] She was married to jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane, with whom she performed in 1966–1967.^[2] One of the foremost exponents of the "spiritual jazz" style, her eclectic music proved widely influential both within and outside the world of jazz.

This performance tonight was recorded at the Berkeley Community Theater, Berkeley, CA, July 23, 1972, featuring Alice Coltrane (Harp, Organ, Piano), Charlie Haden (Bass), Ben Riley (Drums), Aashish Khan (Sarod), Pranesh Khan (Tabla), Bobby W. (Tambura [Tambora], Percussion).

This comes from a rare 2LP vinyl bootleg released in 2019. The sound is excellent for a boot, supposedly a soundboard recording, no other details. the performance, on the other hand, is incredible. The sarod/tabla duet parts are just the icing on the cake. Considering this is a vinyl bootleg, you will hear fade out/fade in following each track.

Following up this gem of a show was no easy task, so I'm not really going to try to one-up it. Instead I have something you have never hear before: an unreleased Tony Williams Lifetime recording from 1974, AKA "The Stockholm Sessions". This lineup, sometimes knows as "Wildlife" features Tony Willams (Drums), Jack Bruce (Bass), Allan Holdsworth (Guitar), Webster Lewis (Keys), Laura "Tequila" Logan (Vocals). 

I would have given anything to see this lineup perform live. Side note, I saw Tony Williams funeral procession drive down Junipero Serra Boulevard when he passed away in 1997 at the young age of 51. Shoot, that's my age. Damn.

Another Monday, another opportunity for me to share some live delights with all of you. This wasn't an easy one. I've been asking for requests and a fellow asked for some Miles Davis, but wants me to surprise him. That's just too much responsibility!!!! I have over 100 shows of Miles from 1946 all the way up to his final year performing, and each show is either a radio broadcast or soundboard. This is too much for one person to decide. So I chose to go the Bitches Brew era. 

I've got one of his hottest shows from 1970. He did a run of shows at both the Fillmore East in NYC, and the Fillmore West in SF (opening for the Grateful Dead during the SF run!!!). I can only imagine what those hippies thought sitting there, stoned out of their heads waiting for the psychedelic headliner to come on, and here's Miles as bad ass as always, blowing their minds! Damn! I know the Dead were really inspired by his performances during the April 1970 run at Fillmore West. 

Enjoy this treat from March 6, 1970. The Davis Sextet opened for Neil Young and Crazy Horse and The Steve Miller Blues Band for two nights at the Fillmore East, March 6-7 (Friday-Saturday). There were two shows each night. Columbia recorded both nights, but this show remains unissued. This two-night gig is Wayne Shorter's last as a member of the Sextet. (He did remain with Davis for a studio date on March 17.)

For the record, Miles could not stand Steve Miller. He did enjoy and respect Jerry Garcia however. Read his autobiography "Miles", for all the juicy details.

For the second show tonight, not a request, but something I thought with compliment the Miles Davis set. I've got a man too many called a carny, considering his ability to play multiple woodwinds and brass instruments at once. And he was blind to top it off! I'm talking about Rahsaan Roland Kirk. This show from March 3, 1972 comes to us from a performance in Hamburg, Germany, and may be an audience in a radio studio; I'm not certain. This is the second set only, as the first set appears to be unavailable. But what a set! Kirk aims to please. He shows you the theme and then throws it out the window until the end.

I swear I didn't mean to play two shows from the same date a day following the anniversary. I really didn't realize this was happening when I chose them both. Obviously it's kismet.

First up is the great John Zorn and his Electric Masada ensemble. I cannot say enough great things about this group. There aren't enough adjectives to describe their brilliance. This is not your grandpappy's jazz. Instrumentation includes: sax, guitar, drums, percussion, electronics, bass and keyboards. 

John Zorn often plays festivals with many of his groups. This festival, June 25 - 27, 2007 in Rome was broadcast live on RAI Radio Tre. This particular show is from the final day of Zorn-fest, June 27, 2007, fourteen years ago, Sunday. I edited out the Italian radio DJs commentary between a few tracks.

The second show tonight features the remarkable drummer Tony Williams along with rock guitar GOD, Ronnie Montrose: "The Battle Night", from June 27, 1978 in Tokyo, Japan. Legendary drummer Billy Cobham joins them on the final tune of the night. This is a stellar soundboard recording from this rare lineup.

A Season in Hell #177: Reaching For The Stars

Listening to my show is really great if you have ADD. I don't have ADD, then again it's possible that some people might suggest that maybe, possibly, perhaps a chance, you never know, maybe John Hell has a little bit of ADD. Never been diagnosed! Though as a child I was told that I was hyperactive, I would very quickly find my way to sugar if it was within smelling distance. With that being said, listening my show is also a soothing and calming experience for many. For instance, take tonights show, please (HA!). I was pretty much in the mood for all Jazz, and okay fine, maybe a little funk, and possibly a little soul. But really in the end doesn't all of that kind of fit into the same nice big fat funk box?

And then something amazing happened, the "legendary" DJ Casey Kasem left this mortal coil. He kicked the bucket. He moved off into the outer worlds. So, of course that left me no choice but to present him and the only way that I find relevant, Which is of course to play Negativland. 

You see, as a long time noncommercial, underground DJ, I have always found the late Mr. Kasem to be, how should I put this politely, a bit of a turd. Yes, it's true I really do believe that he is one of the major forces of evil, or, should I say was one of the major forces of evil in all of the commercial music industry. So I am not really finding that I miss him. As a matter of fact if anything I'm thrilled. I mean no offense. And who knows what that means? I don't mean any offense to his family or his friends or even his fans, but I will tell you that I really believe deep in my heart he caused more damage for talented and original musicians then possibly any of the owners of commercial media in the United States since the 1970s.

So I interrupted some jazz funk soul programming on my show this evening to pay"tribute" to Mr. Kasem, and hoping that may be the final nail in the coffin for himself and people who feel obliged to believe that they can seriously determine what America wants to listen to. Yeah, keep on reaching for the stars there Casey. As a matter fact get as far out here as you possibly can. Maybe now some real talented and original artists will have a chance to make there own impression on the listening audience without you dictating who should be on top? Say hi to Dick Clark for me.

A Season in Hell #142: This Cat's Too Cool For You

It's good to be back. I haven't taken so many breaks in a good decade. I'm back in the groove after tonight's show.

After such hullabaloo from the Rock Fight 10 show, I needed a much deserved break. Also, I produced and hosted Comic Outpost TV for the SF comic store Comic Outpost, at Comic Con in San Diego. More on that coming soon. What an eyeopener that was.

My show has never been genre-specific. I plays what I wants to. But that's not saying that I can't focus on a specific genre from time to time. I've been collecting music (LPs, CDs, digital) since I was a wee lad, dating back to my first KISS records in the mid 1970s.

I have a rule when I shop for music: if I purchase three things or more, one MUST be from an International artist (reggae, dub, middle-eastern, etc.), one must be Jazz. By doing this I've realy grown a very well-rounded library. Tonight I was in the mood for Jazz. Most of the show is some tasty vinyl treats.
