Sometimes it hits a little too close to home.

Rock poster artist and friend Ron Donovan passed away last week after losing his liver to too many years of alcohol abuse. I loved Ron like anyone did, which meant it was a love-hate relationship. He was funny, talented, smart, and charismatic. He was also selfish, often tardy, never with the tools he needed to do the job, full of excuses and a real pain in the ass. He burned more bridges than most. That being said, he was ubiquitous. There was no one like the Hobbit, "Rotten" Ronnie Donovan.

For over six years he was my foil when we co-hosted the 6 hour bootleg battle "Rock Fight" (links to most are below). Ron and I had perhaps the largest combined bootleg collection anywhere. It was easy to pull out brilliant live versions of tunes to one-up each other. He was always late to these shows, rarely had the material he needed, and would often pass out on the couch before we were through. I ended up having a strict "no hard alcohol" rule for these shows, which paid off as they were the finest we did together. We also hosted a few live bands and interviews during these marathon shows.

In 2011 Ron volunteered his services to make us a poster for Radio Valencia, which he was going to present at a big fundraiser of ours. He was four hours late and the poster had the incorrect URL and frequency on it! Oh, and he misspelled "commercials. HA! In typical Donovan fashion he just shrugged it off with a smile. I still have about a dozen of those posters somewhere.

Ron was mostly known through his great rock poster art. I met him when he and Chuck Sperry ran Firehouse Kustom Rock Posters. I would hang out at their warehouse and watch the magic happen. Ron was always the life of the party and often would bring the party with him. I'll miss seeing him in his ink-covered shorts-over-thermals, and socks/sandals ensemble, riding along on his Powell/Peralta board looking for a free drink at any one of many bars or "offices" he had around town.

Tonight's show is a tribute of sorts to Ron. I'm not sure he would have approved of every track, but he would have liked that they were all songs that one would want played as they passed on.

Yours truly,

jh

Too much has been written in the annals of mythology about the many Rock Fights which came before, but no one could have prepared any of us for what was about to come on this holiest of holy Rock Fight nights.

Each hour progresses with guests, amazing live tracks, and brilliant banter that will leave you in stitches, and quite possibly paralyzed from the neck down.

John and Ron are in fine form for much of the evening (I repeat MUCH of the evening), the guest interviews are a perfect addition to what is already an institution in radio land. The music selections, mostly focused on Rock, also feature a Black Metal set, and a wonderful Blues set; taking us from the roots of Rock to wear Rock has certainly come.

In the second hour author Linda Kelly joined us at to talk about the upcoming release of the new edition of her 1995 Grateful Dead-themed book: "Deadheads", just in time for the 50th anniversary of my favorite band.

Sound Engineer John Karr joins us in the third hour to talk about all the many bands he's worked with over the years. John has worked regularly as an engineer in many recording studios around San Francisco, and has worked the sound board at pretty much every club in San Francisco for over 20 years. He's got great stories and has brought along excellent, stellar live recordings from shows where he is manning the board.

Metallica fanzine editor Steffan Chirazi joins us for the fourth hour to play us BLACK (metal) Christmas. You know, an anti-christ/mas thing. All Black Metal, with some road stories. Great road stories. Steff is always ready with some of the best stories from the road. He's been doing it for over 25 years so he knows his stuff.

We're doing a blues set the fifth hour. It makes sense. All live versions you've never heard before. Eric McFadden called in this hour. He's in Albuquerque, New Mexico right now, and shared his history of listening to live music, and his own memories of his favorite bands growing up.

Play the game "Where is Ron". Where oh where could he be throughout the program? Is he on Mic? Is he lost in the mission? How many songs did Ron actually play on Rock Fight 14? Tune in and play along with rest of us.

Finally we close the show the way we opened the show: with a tribute to the late great Joe Cocker. Joe died on Monday at the age of 70 years old. Anyone who's listened my show over the years knows that I am huge fan of Joe Cocker, he's always been an absolute inspiration to my growth as a music fan. The Mad Dogs Englishmen Tour from 1970 is by far the greatest series of shows that I have ever heard in my long tenure of collecting live music. It is my dream and aspiration to one day front of band in much the same manner as Joe Cocker did with that tour. It's an understatement to say that you will be missed, Joe. RIP to a man who taught me more about music than most people I have ever known, personally.

Enjoy.

Rock Fight 12! This Time It's An Invasion

Once again it's time to put everything down, set six hours aside, and listen to John Hell and Ron Donovan butcher each other in a knock down, drag out bootleg battle, of epic proportions!

John and Ron have quite possibly the LARGEST live bootleg collection in the known world (source unknown and possibly nonexistent), and twice a year they share it with you, dear listeners. Why? They don't have to tell you!

Tonight the focus is on five areas of their deep musical interest and knowledge: British Invasion, Blues, Led Zeppelin, Prince and James Brown. Check out the setlist below for the details.

The best part of this show besides the music, has to be the "witty" "conversation" between Ron and John. Yes, they know what they're (why am I talking in the third person? Oh well, I've already gone this far...) talking about. The two of them have been collecting live music for over 25 years (cassette, vinyl, CD, Flac), and understand the "OTHER" music industry better than most. Lots of discussion ensues.

In the fifth hour, guitar slinger Eric McFadden calls in following his show in Chicago, to share some road stories with us. He has made a number of live appearances in studio for Rock Fight's past. It's too kind of him to phone it in this time out.

About 99% are high quality soundboard recordings. Only one Zep tune is from an audience source, but what a show it was!

Who won you ask? It's possible that for the first time in over six years, it was a draw. We'll fight it out again in December.

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #140: Rock Fight 10!!!!

It only happen once every six months. And when it does, babies hide their children, drunks hide there malt liquor, men cry into their beer. I can only be talking about one thing: ROCK FIGHT!

It's that time again, ladies and gentlemen, when rock poster artist Rotten Ron Donovan and Radio DJ Stalwart, John Hell get together and lay down the massive pipe that is ROCK FIGHT!!!

Ron and I have what amounts to be the largest combined collection of live bootlegs anywhere this side of analog hill (unseen on Google Maps). Every six months in December and June we get together to see who's is bigger and badder.

Every track below is followed by the date/location and who chose the track; JH for me, and RD for Ron. As you'll see, I've clearly got him beat, 2-1. He was also more than an hour late, which is why the first chunk of music is from me.

Not only is the music full of top notch performances and excellent recording quality, but the smack talk between music blocks sets a new standard (high or low, you decide).

There's an interview with Limbomaniac's frontman/bassist, Butthouse in the fifth hour, too.

Get ready for some prime time, low down, face-to-face, bootleg MAYHEM!!!

IT'S ROCK FIGHT 10 BABY!!!!

Enjoy.

A Season in Hell #116: ROCK FIGHT 9!!!

IT'S TIME FOR ROCK FIGHT 9, BITCHES!!!!

I am so going to kick Ron Donovan's ass tonight! I can almost taste it. Er...the win, not his dirty, Hobbit ass. ew

For five years Ron and I have gone mano-a-mano in a battle royal of bootleg mayhem. We have so many live shows between us, that the only way we have a chance to listen to them is when we do this show.

Ron has generally sucked at this show. He always brings in lame 70s classic rock, or poor audience recordings, which he proceeds to do air guitar jerk-off leads to. Poor guy.

I, on the other hand, have stellar soundboards, of kick ass ROCK!, which will blow your earholes our, and pop your corneas off. Good stuff.

We have some bands come in, and always welcome listener interaction.

Local band, Illogistical Resource Dept. came by to share some of their amazing music. The interview was tip top notch. Check out their music and then go buy it.

Live Evil stopped by to talk about their Tuesday night show at the Knockout in SF. These guys are almost dirtier than I am.

Following all of this, Ron and I paid tribute to the 50th anniversaries of both the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton.

You know you want to stream this show.
Part one. Part two.

Download it and make it a great stocking-stuffer.

A Season in Hell #92: ROCK FIGHT 8!!!

Here we go again.

Every June and December Rotten Ronnie Donovan of Firehouse Kustom Posters and I host Rock Fight, a four hour deluge into our bootleg vaults. Ever since Ron was forced to get on the wagon the shows have been superb (I still kick his ass each and every time). Tonight was one of the BEST.

Lot's of guests tonight, including a legendary live music recorder (he who cannot be named), local guitar gunslinger Eric McFadden and his lovely Super D, Metallica official fanzine "So What" editor Steffan Chirazi, and a phone interview with Butthouse of Limbomaniacs. WOW!

This and some amazing live bootleg music too. The fourth hour is the premier of the newly released (unofficial of course) Led Zeppelin "Snowblind" from 03-20-75 Vancouver, which Ron Donovan did the art for.

Listen in and decide for yourself who won this edition of ROCK FIGHT! (it was me).

A Season in Hell #67: Radio Valencia: ROCK FIGHT 7!!!

It's on! John Hell and Rotten Ronnie Donovan go toe to toe, head to head, mano a mano for the 7th installment of the bootleg matchup to end all bootleg matchups: ROCK FIGHT 7!!!

What a great show tonight. And once again, I kicked Ron's ass. Seriously Ron, you really can't play crappy audience recordings and actually think you're going to win?

We were blessed with some special guests in the studio tonight. In the 7 o'clock hour Ralph Spight of Victim's Family and Jello Biafra's Guantanamo School of Medicine came by to talk about this Sunday's San Francisco Rock Project benefit at Rickshaw Shop. Zeda, a ten year old bassist, and Cody a fifteen year old guitarist joined him to talk about the show. Check out their website for more info. This is a really excellent cause.

Around 9:30 the greatest guitarist you've never heard of, Eric McFadden came in to talk about his new sauce he's been cooking up. Actually, he was talking about a lot of things, including waffles and an apple pie that one first place at a Thanksgiving dinner. It's always such a pleasure to see Eric and Super D. They're on the road so often that one wonders how they feel when they actually have time to relax.

As for the show, you can download it and listen to it at your leisure here for part one, and here for part two.

ROCK FIGHT #7 Is Coming Your Way!

December 12th features John Hell and the return of Rotten Ronnie Donovan to the RV studios, as he and I host ROCK FIGHT 7!!! From 6-10PM we'll be throwing down in an all-out BOOTLEG battle royal! Ronnie and I are diehard live bootleg collectors, and twice a year we go mano-a-mano to prove who has the best collection of them all. (we all know it's me).

The theme this time is "Lucky 7". Help us out. Are there any bands or songs that we should play that night? Remember, we're playing live versions. We both have huge collections, so chances are we've got the music.

Tune in, Monday December 12th, 6-10PM on Radio Valencia, 87.9FM in SF, http://radiovalencia.fm

A Season in Hell #42: Radio Valencia: ROCK FIGHT 6!!!

Once again it's the night that I show little Rotten Ronnie Donovan of Firehouse Kustom Posters who the real Rock Star is. Me!

Rock Fight 6 runs twice a year: December and June. For four hours Ron and I bombast each other with glorious live bootleg material, both of are avid collectors of. We're a bit obsessed.

I've destroyed Ron the last five times. The show starts at 6, and at the moment it's 5:55 and he's not even here yet. He's been late before; up to an hour, once. It's a sure bet that Ron won't be in his groove until the third hour. Unless of course, if he's drunk, which is what happened in Rock Fight 5. You can hear Rock Fight 5 by going here. Listen to the second half of the show the get an idea of what I mean.

Ok, he showed up at 6:04. Let's get it on!

The plan for tonight is for each of us to play a live cut, one after the other. We try to one-up the other. We're also going to do "Rock Blocks", which will consist of each co-host to do a 20 minute block of music of his choice. We do two blocks each.

To know who played what, note the JH (John Hell) or RD (Ron Donovan) at the end of each track. Also, not only are the tracks and artists listed, but the date of each performance. If you would like more info on the shows we played, please visit http://db.etree.org.

Update: Ron did not get drunk tonight. I have to admit, he may have actually tied me tonight. I'm 5-0-1 after 6 Rock Fights.

You can see playlists of all Rock Fight's on this blog. Scroll back.
