Let me be your (un)healthy distraction. I know Mondays can be heavy, so that's why I'm here to lighten the load. It's kind of like bran for your brain. Think of it as super colon blow for your earholes.

I've got a good amount of tunes you've never heard, and possibly a few you forgot you loved.

I also was training a new DJ, David Fraser, who is going to be hosting a new show on Mondays noon-2pm. He took over the show for about 30 minutes. I labeled his set with "DF". Good music choices all the way!

New music from Alit Gun, Melvins, GOAT, Ty Segall, and Rickshaw Billy's Burger Patrol (who I saw at The Stork Club the previous weekend). Also, there's a new 50th anniversary Rush compilation out. I played an alternate take of The Trees. You're welcome.

So much good music out there, I'm in tears overjoyed that I get to share all of this with you.

For years now I've listed my playlist the way you see it below. What do you think of it? How can I improve it for you? Leave a comment.

Hell is love.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #550: Inspiration Move Me Brightly

Inspiration comes in many forms, but for tonight it was a pile of vinyl and an old friend. We held a very rare in-person Radio Valencia meeting before my show with 18 members of our staff (35 current shows). One of our staffers, the Alchemist, Saturdays 6-10pm, has been a close friend of mine since we first met when working at Tower Records back in 1989. Yes, that's a longterm friend right there.

I recruited him over two years ago, since I knew he had excellent taste in music, and if he was interested, would host an impressive show. He has yet to disappoint.

After the meeting I invited the Alchemist to hang out in the studio with me for my show, and it pushed me to bring an even better show than I already strive for. This guy has taste and I did not wish to disappoint.

Plenty of new songs, including Robin Coomer, WAND, GOAT, the Linda Lindas, and Lorde covering Talking Heads.

Dig This Inspired show.

Enjoy and please share.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #542: Can't Spell Malfunction Without Fun

I was this close (you'll have to imagine me holding my fingers really close together) to playing only three or four tunes for the entire two hours. And then I realized that's foolish when I brought a whole stack of albums with me.

The first hour was only about four tunes though. Hard Bop (I originally wrote that as "Hard Bob" and that would have probably lost me a few listeners...or added a few), Free Jazz, Kraut Rock and modern Free Jazz/Electronic. Then I realized I really had to start sharing some other treats, including new Nick Cave, The Bell Rays and King Gizzard. There's also a 50th anniversary remaster of the Frank Zappa classic Apostrophe that I threw in. It's the album that got me into Zappa, though I admit I'm not as obsessed as my boy The Alchemist (Saturday nights on Radio Valencia).

If you like what you're hearing, please check out our other shows. This station was started with the mission of having real live DJs curate shows from their own deep knowledge of music, not from some algorithm. We're proud of the work we've put in.

And if you want to support what we're doing, please consider donating. This is labor of love, and we all pay monthly dues to keep the lights on and the turntables spinning. We need help maintaining the equipment we have, and regularly replacing worn out parts. We also have a deep desire to update our website. If you know anyone that can donate items for a raffle please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Enjoy and please share.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #524: Ladies Night With Hell

Let John Hell care for the kitchen while the ladies let it all hang out. This is Women's Month, and I love to celebrate all that is women. When it comes to music, there really is no dearth in aural options. I have strived to balance my shows out with quality female fare over the years.

This has been hard, but not for the reasons you think.

Not surprisingly, the music industry has been run by male chauvinist capitalists for over one hundred years. And like the casting couches of Hollywood, along with the color line, getting enough quality female representation in music has been hair raising.

Still, there is so much to continue to choose from in female-fronted artists of many genres. What I have for you tonight is only a small sampling of what has been in rotation in the Hell household (and on this show) over the years.

Enjoy this, and join me Monday, March 18th, when I welcome Northern California singer, songwriter, artist, designer Robin Coomer back into the studio to talk up her new solo release.

Tune in and please share.

It feels like the first time almost every time. I get an itch to share all of this with you Monday nights. No guests tonight, and I honestly just felt like stretching way out tonight, hence the few tracks you see below. There are a few long ones in here that I know are going to take you on a little trip if you allow them to.

I suggest you make the time to sit back and enjoy this one.

Not much else to say. I hope I get to play more music for you again soon.

Enjoy.

Hell's Kitchen Radio #507: Sgt Splendor In The Halls of Hell

There are good times and then there are really good times.

Guess what this night was about?

Eric McFadden and Kate Vargas stopped in Monday night to talk all about their latest project: Sgt. Splendor!

I've been friends with Eric McFadden since the late, great Rotten Ron Donovan introduced us back in 2007. He's been on my show countless times. We've spent many a fine night at clubs and ice cream shops. And then there was New Orleans. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeit.

That all being said, I was introduced to one Adam Mackintosh, singer/songwriter extraordinaire in New Orleans in 2017 for an extra special event, which you can read about here. It was at this event week that I met Adam. We were to be roommates for the few nights we were in town, and he met up with me at a club. It was your run of the mill extremely hot New Orleans night in May, when he walked in wearing a brown three piece suit, ascot and sunglasses, carrying a brown leather suitcase and brown Italian sunglasses, standing 6'5". We were introduced and the first thing I asked him was his thoughts about cockroaches? The place was hot. New Orleans in May, hot.

Adam and I have been best friends ever since.

Eric and Adam haven't seen one another in a few years, and Adam was in town visiting family, so I naturally had him come into the studio. I purposely didn't tell Eric about this, because I like a good reveal. Another great thing about this night was that Eric's partner-in-crime Kate Vargas was along for the ride. I was planning on interviewing them about their great act, Sgt. Splendor, who is on tour right now, and will be playing Bottle Rock in a few months.

You have just got to be listening when I'm talking on mic and there's a knock at the door. I ask Eric to open it. The rest is radio history.

All three of my guests were very vocal tonight about songwriting and performing. I really appreciate them coming down. Give it a listen and I think their enthusiasm will rub off on you.

Radio Valencia has a fundraiser coming up Sunday, February 26th from noon-5pm at our next door neighbors place: Make Out Room. All proceeds go to help us pay for upkeep and new equipment, among many other things. Come check out super nova rock trio Star Decay and the headliners, R50 the premier Rush Cover band. Come on down and support your favorite Bay Area internet radio station and help keep us going into 2023.

Enjoy and please share.
