With the passing of Christine McVie, the longtime keyboardist and vocalist of pop sensations Fleetwood Mac, it was a no-brainer what I wanted to share with you this week: Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac from 1968, of course. RIP Miss McVie.

Fleetwood Mac was Green's vehicle. It was all about him. He didn't want his name used in the band name because he knew it was going to be temporary. As temporary as it was, he left a lasting imprint on so many great guitarists of his own era, Rory Gallagher, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, just to name a few. Green was only in the band for about three years, 1968 - 1970 (he also filled in on a tour in 1971). Fleetwood Mac have had about 20 lineups over the years, and are as far removed from their blues roots as can be. Though the majority of their fans relish the mid-70s era, it's this late 60s era that I absolutely go gaga over.

This show is a stellar soundboard June 9, 1968, live at the Carousel Ballroom in San Francisco. They share the bill with the Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead. The second set of their show features Paul Butterfield on harmonica. What a blast that weekend in San Francisco must have been.

There are minor channel fluctuations in a few spots but this mostly sounds spectacular with a very 60's sounding mix (vocals in one channel and guitars in the other). To be able to hear Paul Butterfield with Fleetwood Mac is a highlight but Peter Green sounds really great too! 

I have heard that this was posted back in the STG era, but this version has been remastered with the sets separated better between discs and some minor "nip and tuck" type edits. No EQ or noise reduction was used in the remastering process. 

From Peter Green's stage comments, this is from one week into Fleetwood Mac's first U.S. tour and he sounds like he's having a really good time on the last night of a 3 show run with Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. This is presumed to be the last night because Peter Green makes a comment about how they'll be back in 2 weeks (not the following night). I think that they returned to the Carousel on the 22nd or 23rd of June. 

Lineage: MSR > Cassette > DAT > CDR from Dick Latvala's 1st generation cassettes. Dick's copy was likely made from Bear's master, as Bear taped many of the other acts that played the same night as The Grateful Dead. CD extraction with Toast Titanium > Macintosh Pro Tools (minor edits, normalization & retracking) > AIFF > FLAC > MP3 320

A little bit of this, a little bit of that. I'm not one to really reminisce much, but when it comes to music, it's all about reaching deep to connect the rich past with the progressive future. What does it matter what genre is played, as long as it gets played up against something that just feels right, right? Right.

In my early days of radio, when I was just a green newbie at KFJC, I recall the debate: play nothing but the newest of the new, and the edgiest of the edge, versus the need to add a taste of "accessible" sounds to hold the new music together like glue. I subscribe the view of the latter. If you tune in regularly, than you know that I always enjoy finding something new to share with you. You also know that my library runs deep. I can't wait to play that "classic" you never knew existed, or haven't heard in so many years, you forgot that you loved it.

That's how I roll.

In my most recent show it is indeed about going deep to blend genres and emotions, to take you on an aural journey into the night (I am on 8-10pm after all). New music from Oh Sees and Mikal Cronin, along with some covers that you'll be searching for as soon as you hear it from me.

Is he or isn't he? Apparently he is. Dang. I saw Tom Petty three times in the late 80s and early 90s, including the very first Bridge School benefit in 1986, which is the only one I attended. I also was able to see him with Lenny Kravitz opening (the Let Love Rule tour). Petty always put on such a great show. I gave up going to shows in large venues many years ago, but I always felt that I seeing Petty again would be fun, regardless of the size of the venue.

There are few artists I would see in a large venue today. I would see Neil Young in a large venue if Crazy Horse was backing him. Other than that I prefer a venue ranging from a size 50-1500 people. The more intimate the better.

Speaking of an intimate setting, my bride took me to see Oh Sees (no more "Thee") last week at the Great American Music Hall. Not only was it a brilliant show, it was without a doubt, the loudest show I have ever been to. Even guitarist/lead singer John Dwyer was heard to ask if that show wasn't louder than the previous night's? I'm seeing them again in December at The Chapel. Get your tickets before they sell out.

Last night I was lucky enough to catch what has been marked as the "Last Polka" of the great SF punk-polka band, Polkacide, at Bottom of the Hill. After 30+ years they're hanging up their lederhosen. I spent a good 30 minutes in the polkapit. and boy did I feel it. The four original members are grandparent age now, and I'm guessing that having 10 people in the band makes it difficult to make the scene too often. I'm hoping for an annual reunion at the very least.

On a completely unrelated note, my bride Catherine gave birth to our little boy, Bodhi Miles Hell this past Thursday! We couldn't be more excited about this fella coming into our lives. I'll be taking a few weeks off from my show so I can be home with the little fella, fitting him with black t-shirts and guitar picks, and singing to him my favorite Melvis and Grateful Dead tunes. I can't wait to have him and Little Lauson Hell both in the studio with me in the years to come.

This week I was proud to have Delynn Parker on my show to speak about suicide awareness and prevention. Delynn has a MS in psychology and is working on her MFT. She works with young kids in Bay Area elementary schools. We spoke for the two hours about suicide, why it's such a taboo to speak about, how friends and family can support their loved ones, what to say, and what not to say to someone who is contemplating suicide, and a lot of music from people who have committed suicide, or from those who have lost someone to it.

Though the topic is a heavy one, Delynn's soft and loving heart filled the two hours information as well as humor. The more we know, the more we can save.
