What a delight it was celebrating my 600th show on Radio Valencia by hosting four musicians who helped shape the punk history in San Francisco.

Who would have thought when I started my road in radio in the late 80s, that I would grow up to hosts legends of a music scene that was too young to enjoy when it was at its height, but came to love it deeply?

I have always followed my bliss. Music has always been my bliss. I'm not much of a fanboy...Ok, maybe for Ty Segall, but other than that I just really enjoy being around music and musicians, for the love of the art. I like talking music. I love reading about music. My favorite books about music are when the artist is talking about making the art. Keith Richard's book "Life" does this well.

37 years in radio (yikes!) has honored me with seeing some incredible live music, interviewing countless bands, and getting to know some of the finest people to grace a stage. I'm living the life! Monday night I was lucky to host four people who have made their mark on the San Francisco music scene, and will be doing so once again this coming Saturday at the newly reopened Mabuhay Gardens and On Broadway in North Beach.

Fritz and Brendan from The Mutants, Henry Rosenthal (Hank Rank) of Crime, and Ralph Spight of The Freak Accident spent the evening with me telling tales of the heyday of punk in the city, and the venue that sparked the magic. Music from these bands and other bands of the day are sprinkled throughout, all in preparation for a great night at the FabMab and On Broadway.

I am honored to be co-producing this show with Steve DePace of Flipper. Radio Valencia is co-presenting and will be spinning music throughout the night. And I'm your MC!!!

Tickets are almost gone for these two events, so please follow the links embedded in the posters to grab yours before they're gone.

Tune in Friday 8-10PM Pacific for a special on the upcoming live shows, featuring Steve DePace of Flipper, and members of BitchFit and False Flag.

Here's to 600 more shows on Radio Valencia!!!

What a treat to host local guitarist, singer, songwriter, and all around good guy, Ralph Spight on Monday night. Ralph is known mostly through his years leading Bay Area Hardcore Punk band Victims Family, along with bassist Larry Boothroyd. Tonight he was in talking up his side project, which could honestly be a solid lead project for any other respectable artist, The Freak Accident, who are playing at Bottom of the Hill Saturday night, along with Smokers and The Young Barons.

Ralph has played with or toured with all of the legendary punk bands throughout the years, and he quite a few fine stories to share during the show. He is also the lead guitarist for Jello Biafra's Guantanamo School of Medicine

We talk about the upcoming show, touring, recording, playing guitar, layering instruments, and surviving in today's musical soup.

Ralph's songwriting is second to none and I know you're going to dig this.

Come on down to the Bottom of the Hill this Saturday, November 17th for this all ages show. Doors at 7:30, show at 8:30. Bring the kids!

I'm gearing up for my 12th annual Annual Annual, where I choose one year to focus two hours on. I've got my ears on three years right now, so you'll have to tune in Monday, November 28th, 8-10PM PST to check it out.

Enjoy and please share.

A Season in Hell #67: Radio Valencia: ROCK FIGHT 7!!!

It's on! John Hell and Rotten Ronnie Donovan go toe to toe, head to head, mano a mano for the 7th installment of the bootleg matchup to end all bootleg matchups: ROCK FIGHT 7!!!

What a great show tonight. And once again, I kicked Ron's ass. Seriously Ron, you really can't play crappy audience recordings and actually think you're going to win?

We were blessed with some special guests in the studio tonight. In the 7 o'clock hour Ralph Spight of Victim's Family and Jello Biafra's Guantanamo School of Medicine came by to talk about this Sunday's San Francisco Rock Project benefit at Rickshaw Shop. Zeda, a ten year old bassist, and Cody a fifteen year old guitarist joined him to talk about the show. Check out their website for more info. This is a really excellent cause.

Around 9:30 the greatest guitarist you've never heard of, Eric McFadden came in to talk about his new sauce he's been cooking up. Actually, he was talking about a lot of things, including waffles and an apple pie that one first place at a Thanksgiving dinner. It's always such a pleasure to see Eric and Super D. They're on the road so often that one wonders how they feel when they actually have time to relax.

As for the show, you can download it and listen to it at your leisure here for part one, and here for part two.
