A Season in Hell #85: Record Store Day Is Very Very Good To Me
A few days post-Record Store Day and I'm still reeling with the fact that I was broke going into it and even more broke now. But that's how the 12" spins I wager. Anyhow, RSD was a complete success where the radio broadcast is concerned.
I got down to Vinyl Solution at 10:30, where the owner, Tommy, warned me NOT to go through the RSD bins until the store was open. He didn't want the line-up outside to get pissed at him. I abided by his "request", though I did sneak a peek or three. Hee hee.
The equipment for the broadcast showed up late, so by the time the store was open at 11 I had to set up. I did jump into a box of records right at 11 though, and grabbed some tasty treats, many of which I played tonight. See below for the playlist.
Jack Champion brought down the gear, and we got rolling on the radio at noon. I was thrilled to be co-hosting the opening with my radio hero, M. Dung. He's a serious influence on my being in radio in the first place. It's hard to put into words, but it was from listening to him host the morning show on KFOG back in the 80s that sold me on getting into the wild world of local radio. Unfortunately for me, by the time I got into it the heyday of commercial radio was passing. Luckily for me I found non-commercial radio. Ha!
Anyway, the broadcast was a ton of fun. Lots of people, and the Feral Moon Band played. I got to interview Tommy and he gave me a discount on records. You really can't ask for too much more than that.
The first hour tonight is a selection of the music I got at Record Store Day; all vinyl. The second hour is my third part of eight celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Grateful Dead's EPIC 1972 European tour. I'm playing selections from 04/17/72 & 04/21/72.

A Season in Hell #84: Pigpen Offers Advice
Week 2/8 in my celebration of the Grateful Dead's epic Europe 72 tour. It's been 40 years, and these shows really do stand the test of time.
Tonight I'm playing selections from 04/14/72, Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen, Denmark, and 04/16/72, Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark.
It was pretty hard to decide what to play tonight. As of this writing I'm still not totally certain what I'm going to throw on. At first I was totally prepared to play the Good Lovin' jam from 04/14/72. But then I listened to the Truckin' jam from 04/16 and I threw everything out of the window. Now I'm thinking of playing Mr. Charlie and Big Boss Man from the 14th, and the Truckin' jam from the 16th. WHAT DO I DO?!?!?!?
I know, I could play them both, but I really don't want my entire show to be the Dead. As much as I love them, I'm also into sharing new music with you all, and I've found some wonderful new tunes to share.
No worries. I'll have it all figured out by showtime. I hope...er, I think. Let me know what you think.
Next week selections from 04/17/72 and 04/21/72.

A Season in Hell #83: Radio Valencia: Get on the Bus
40 years ago this week the Good ol' Grateful Dead embarked upon a mythical tour of Europe that would be encapsulated in a three LP set, "Europe 72". I've had this vinyl since I was a wee lad, and pretty much wore all three LPs out within a year of owning it. Thank God for CDs.
I started collecting bootlegs in the early 80s, and the Dead were the main band I searched for. This was long before the internet. I remember looking in the back of Relix Magazine for taper lists, and mailing away for their list. Then, once received I would mail them tapes and a list of what I wanted. The anticipation of receiving those tapes was almost unbearable.
When it comes to collecting bands like the Grateful Dead, it's all about the tour and the era. There was so much that was hard to find; so many Holy Grails.
Europe 72 is one of these.
22 history-defining shows.
In celebration of the 40th anniversary of this tour the second hour of my next eight shows will feature some blistering tracks from almost every show. I have them all, save 04/07/72, which I've only heard a crappy audience of. I have soundboards of the rest of the tour and it's AMAZING!!!
Tonight I've got 04/08/72 and 04/11/72 cued up and ready to ROCK.

A Season in Hell #82: Radio Valencia: I Wanna, Wanna Be A Star
There are some days that I'm just full of so much angst that I have to get it out by listening to some very loud music and shaking a lot. SST does this for me better than most. Oh, how I miss the 80s. Don't get me wrong, I listen to new music all the time, and LOVE it. But there is just something about that era that sets me free. Tonight I play over an hour of some of the best SST bands there were.
Enjoy.
